What is urethritis?
Urethritis refers to irritation or inflammation of the urethra. The urethra is the tube that empties urine from the bladder. In men the urethra extends the full length of the penis. In women the urethra is much shorter, about an inch long, and the opening is just above the vagina. Because the opening of a woman's urethra is so close to the vagina and anus, bacteria can easily enter it from these areas.

Definition
Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra that is usually caused by an infection. Description
The urethra is the canal that moves urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. When this canal becomes infected, inflammation occurs due to the accumulation of white blood cells in the area. When this occurs, it is called urethritis. Besides the urethra, the urinary tract consists of the bladder, ureters, and kidneys. Inflammation can move up the urethra, causing cystitis in the bladder, or nephritis in the kidneys. Collectively, these inflammations are called urinary tract infections or UTIs. Urinary tract infections are much more common in women than in men, probably due to anatomy. Infections are especially more common in older women, due to bladder problems.
Uncomplicated urethritis usually results from infection by the bacteria Escherichia coli , commonly found in the bowel. Complicated urethritis can occur when other problems exist, such as kidney stones , malformations of the urinary tract, spinal cord injury , or a compromised immune system. People with diabetes tend to have more urinary tract infections, as well as hospitalized patients. Urinary tract infections can also be sexually transmitted. Some people seem to be susceptible to urinary tract infections, having them recurrently.

In women the urethra is much shorter, about an inch long, and the opening is just above the vagina. Because the opening of a woman's urethra is so close to the vagina and anus, bacteria can easily enter it from these areas. How does it occur?
Most often, especially in males, urethritis results from a sexually transmitted disease (STD). The two most common STDs associated with urethritis in males are chlamydia and gonorrhea . However, other STDs can cause these symptoms as well, including herpes simplex virus and the human papilloma virus. Less serious STDs such as trichomoniasis can cause symptoms also. In most older women, the tissues of the urethra and bladder become thinner and drier after menopause. This is the usual cause of urethritis in older women. Urethritis may at times simply be an irritation caused by rubbing or pressure on the groin area. For example, tight clothing can cause urethritis. It may also result from an irritant such as soap, powder, or spermicides. Some people can't use spermicides for this reason. Sometimes vaginal infections (for example, a yeast infection) cause women to have symptoms of urethritis.

The urinary tract consists of the organs involved in the production and elimination of liquid waste (urine) from the body: the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Any part of this system can become infected by bacteria, but most infections involve the lower parts, the bladder and the urethra. These infections can be annoying and even painful. But if they spread to the kidneys, they can become truly serious. Urethritis is an infection or inflammation of the urethra. For complete information about urethritis and other UTIs, click here

Hassle Free Clinic Home Urethritis What is it? Urethritis is an infection of the inside of the penis. The two most important causes are gonorrhea and chlamydia. There are other causes of urethritis as well, not all of which require treatment. Causes and symptoms Gonorrhea , a bacteria that causes a white or yellow pus discharge, mild to severe burning when urinating and itching inside the head of the penis. Symptoms usually begin in two to six, though sometimes men have no symptoms at all. Chlamydia , a bacteria-like organism that causes milder symptoms than gonorrhea (a white or clear discharge with mild burning). Symptoms can take seven to 21 days to start. However, in up to 30 per cent of cases, there are no symptoms at all. Trichomonas is an organism passed on during vaginal sex. Men generally have no symptoms but can carry trichomonas inside the penis and transmit it to female partners. Sometimes it causes a slight discharge or itching inside the head of the penis.
    • Temporary symptoms may result from other causes like too much alcohol, spicy foods, reactions to soaps or cosmetics, stress or minor damage from rough sexual activity.
How you get it These infections are passed on during sexual contact between the penis and the rectum, throat or vagina. You can pass them on even if you have no symptoms. You can also transmit them to your eyes via your fingers, though this rarely happens.
