Nonspecific Urethritis in Men Advertising
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Urethritis (YOO-ree-THRI-tis) is a swelling and inflammation of the urethra, the duct that drains the bladder. ""Nonspecific'' is the medical way of saying that the exact cause may not be known. Once you begin treatment, the problem should begin to clear up in about a week.
Causes
Nonspecific urethritis is often an aftermath of unprotected sex. It is frequently the result of an infection with bacteriamost often chlamydia (clah-MID-ee-uh)yeast, or other germs. Injury to the urethra by trauma, surgery, or chemicals can cause urethritis. It can also be triggered by bubble baths or bath oils.
Signs/Symptoms
Typical symptoms include pain or burning during urination; a cloudy, white, or yellow-green mucous discharge from the penis; or pain during sex. In men older than 50, urinary dribbling may be a problem.
Care
If the doctor suspects an infection, you will be given antibiotic medicine.

Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed Introduction
Nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) is the preferred term, rather than the obsolete "nonspecific urethritis" (NSU). NGU includes the entity postgonococcal urethritis (PGU), which represents a dual infection with gonorrhea (two to eight days incubation) and the agents of NGU (10 to 20 days incubation). NGU is a sexually transmitted disease due to Chlamydia trachomatis (40 to 50 percent of cases), Ureaplasma urealyticum (30 to 50 percent), or an unknown third agent. Other STD pathogens rarely , if ever play a role. Epidemiology
In the U.S., NGU is about 2.5 times as common as gonorrhea. In overseas military populations, gonorrhea is slightly more common, but the incidence of either may reach several hundred per 1000 men per year. One aircraft carrier study demonstrated that, statistically , each crew member had at least one case of urethritis during a year's cruise. The analogous disease in women is chlamydia endocervicitis, but it may also present as the acute urethral syndrome or dysuria-pyuria syndrome.

Signs and Symptoms In both sexes, and particularly in women, there may be no symptoms of urethritis. When there are, symptoms include the following. In men:

In women:
  • Painful urination Unusual vaginal discharge

Other characters Urethritis, inflammation of the urethra, that may occur as part of a systemic disorder or as an apparently primary infection. When part of an infectious process, it is commonly caused by gonorrhoea (gonococcal urethritis) or chlamydia and ureaplasma (nongonococcal urethritis). Urethritis is also one of the components of Reiters syndrome external genitalia , which is characterized by urethritis, arthritis and conjunctivitis. Although urethral inflammation is not in itself a serious clinical problem, it is usually accompanied by significant discomfort pain, itching and urinary frequency. In addition, it may be the forerunner of a more serious systemic disorder. Infectious urethritis is most common in young men and is usually sexually transmitted. Postgonococcal urethral strictures complicate urethritis, causing obstructive symptoms at any time from months to years after the infection (see urethral stricture ). Additional complications include urethral false passages (short channels usually running parallel to the bulbous urethra, occasionally re-entering the lumen proximally), periurethral abscesses, urethral diverticula, periurethral fistulas and periurethral phlegmon. Although the incidence of urethral strictures after nongonococcal urethritis seems to be much lower, the prevalence of pre-existing gonorrhoea makes it difficult to make precise determinations.

The main role of imaging is to exclude upper tract malignancy as a cause of haematuria.

Non-gonococcal urethritis
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Non-gonococcal urethritis NGU ) is an inflammation of the urethra In anatomy, the urethra is a tube that connects the urinary bladder to the outside of the body. The urethra has an excretory function in both sexes, to pass urine to the outside, and also a reproductive function in the male, as a passage for sperm. The external urethral sphincter is the skeletal muscle that allows voluntary control over urination.
Anatomy
Not surprisingly men have a longer urethra than women. This means that women tend to be more susceptible to infections of the bladder (cystitis). The length of a male's urethra, and the fact in contains a number of bends makes catheterisation more difficult.

Nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) is a nongonorrheal bacterial infection of the urethra (tube that carries urine out of the body) in men. NGU involves Chlamydia trachomatis , which causes chlamydia. The term NGU refers to the condition in men and chlamydia refers to the condition in women. Incidence and Prevalence According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chlamydia is the most common bacterial infection in the United States. The CDC estimates that 3 million new cases occur each year; however, because as many as 75% of infected women and 50% of infected men do not experience symptoms, only about 500,000 cases are reported annually. Chlamydia is most prevalent among teenagers. Nearly 75% of all new cases occur in women under the age of 25. By age 30, 50% of sexually active women have been exposed to chlamydia. NGU is the most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted disease in men in the United States.
