What is NGU? NGU (NonGonococcal Urethritis) is an infection of the urethra caused by pathogens (germs) other than gonorrhea. How common is NGU? Several types of germs cause NGU, the most common and serious is chlamydia. Chlamydia is very common in both males and females. The diagnosis of NGU is more commonly made in males than in females, mainly due to the anatomical differences. Germs that can cause NGU include but are not limited to:
  • Chlamydia trachomatis (most common) Ureaplasma urealyticum Trichomonas vaginalis (rare) Herpes simplex virus (rare) Adenovirus Haemophilus vaginalis Mycoplasm genitalium
How can I get NGU?
  • Sexual: Most germs that cause NGU can be passed during sex (vaginal, anal or oral) that involves direct mucous membrane contact with an infected person. These germs can be passed even if the penis or tongue does not go all the way into the vagina, mouth or rectum, and even if body fluids are not exchanged.

Urethritis and Urethral Discharge in Men
If you have a urethral discharge you are likely to have a sexually transmitted infection which you can pass on to others. See a doctor, even if symptoms go.
What is urethritis and what causes it? Urethritis means inflammation of the urethra. The urethra is the tube between the bladder and the end of the penis. Urethritis is usually caused by a sexually transmitted infection, but not always. It can occur within a stable relationship.
  • Gonorrhoea is one type of sexually transmitted infection which can cause urethritis. A separate leaflet describes gonorrhoea in more detail.
  • Non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) is the term used to describe urethritis caused by anything other than gonorrhoea. A bacteria called chlamydia is the common cause of NGU. This is one type of sexually transmitted infection. NGU can also be caused by a variety of other bacteria or viruses (bugs). NGU may rarely have a non-infective cause. For example, injury or surgery to the urethra can cause inflammation. A separate leaflet describes NGU in more detail.
Some men have a combination of gonococcal and non-gonococcal urethritis at the same time.

  • Some men have both gonococcal and non-gonococcal urethritis at the same time.
What causes non-gonococcal urethritis?
  • Infection with chlamydia causes about half of cases of NGU. Chlamydia is a a sexually transmitted infection. You can pass chlamydia on during vaginal, anal or oral sex.
  • Various other bacteria or viruses which are sexually transmitted can cause NGU.

Nonspecific Urethritis
Nonspecific Urethritis is an infection to the urethra, which is the urine tube that goes through to pass from the bladder to outside the body. This disease is caused by some bacteria which can be picked up from the rectum or the mouth of your partner. In some cases' people have allergic reaction to latex or spermicide and can get the disease this way. This disease is caused by several other diseases. Symptoms I n men the symptoms can be similar to gonorrhea, but usually milder. The incubation period varies but it is between one week to one month. The discharge form the urethra is thin and clear. In women the symptoms are like those of a urinary tract infection.
If nonspecific urethritis if left untreated in men, it may cause difficulty in urination and perhaps some bleeding. It can also cause the testicles to swell and be tender. If it spreads to the prostate it can cause pain in the groin. Treatment This disease can occasionally be mistaken for gonorrhea, so the doctor will prescribe penicillin which does not treat NSU. It must be treated by tetracycline or another antibiotic

Text: Non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU), also known as non-specific urethritis (NSU) is one of the most common sexually transmissible diseases. It can be caused by a number of different organisms, the most significant one being chlamydia. NGU not due to chlamydia may be due to exposure to normal vaginal or throat organisms.
What are the symptoms?
Men may experience a urethral discharge, pain when urinating, or urethral irritation. These symptoms may be more noticeable in the morning. Symptoms may develop between one and five weeks after the likely acquisition of infection. Some men are unaware of any signs or symptoms.

Definition
Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra that is usually caused by an infection. Description The urethra is the canal that moves urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. When this canal becomes infected, inflammation occurs due to the accumulation of white blood cells in the area. When this occurs, it is called urethritis. Besides the urethra, the urinary tract consists of the bladder, ureters, and kidneys. Inflammation can move up the urethra, causing cystitis in the bladder, or nephritis in the kidneys. Collectively, these inflammations are called urinary tract infections or UTIs. Urinary tract infections are much more common in women than in men, probably due to anatomy. Infections are especially more common in older women, due to bladder problems. Causes and symptoms Uncomplicated urethritis usually results from infection by the bacteria Escherichia coli , commonly found in the bowel. Complicated urethritis can occur when other problems exist, such as kidney stones , malformations of the urinary tract, spinal cord injury , or a compromised immune system. People with diabetes tend to have more urinary tract infections, as well as hospitalized patients. Urinary tract infections can also be sexually transmitted. Some people seem to be susceptible to urinary tract infections, having them recurrently.

Non-specific urethritis by fpa What is it and how is it passed on? What happens if NSU isn't treated? Where to go for help and advice ... How to avoid STIs? What is it and how is it passed on? Non-specific urethritis (NSU) is an inflammation of the urethra (the tube where urine comes out). It may also be called non-gonococcal urethritis. It's commonly caused by sex with a partner who already has a sexually transmitted infection. NSU doesn't usually cause serious health problems. It's easily treated with antibiotics. NSU is usually caused by vaginal, oral or anal sex. It's called 'non-specific' as there are a variety of infections that can cause it:
  • Chlamydia is the most common cause of NSU. Chlamydia is a very common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) and is easily transmitted.
  • Other STIs can also cause NSU.
  • It can also be caused by other genital or urinary tract infections.

Definition
Any inflammation of the urethra not due to gonorrhea , almost always contracted through sexual intercourse and found far more often in men.
Description
Men between the ages of 15 and 30 who have multiple sex partners are most at risk for nongonococcal urethritis (NGU), which is believed to be the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States.
Causes and symptoms
NGU is spread almost exclusively via sexual contact, and appears most often in men because a woman's urethra is less easily infected during sex. The infection is most often due to Chlamydia trachomatis , the organism that causes chlamydia. Those that aren't caused by Chlamydia trachomatis are usually due to another bacterium, Ureaplasma urealyticum . In 10% to 20% of NGU cases, the cause is unknown. Symptoms appear within one to five weeks after infection, and include a slight clear discharge (the color of the discharge can vary from one patient to the next), and itching or burning during or after urination.

Urethritis What is Urethritis? Urethritis is an inflammation of the the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body). What causes Urethritis? Urethritis can be caused by a mechanical injury, an irritating chemical (antiseptic or spermacide), or by an infection. Doctors usually classify infectious Urethritis under one of two categories: Gonococcal urethritis - this is caused by gonorrhea bacteria. Non-gonococcal urethritis - this is caused by chlamydia. Other possible causes of this are Mitoplasma genitalium, Trichomonas vaginalis, Ureplasmic urealyticum, and Herpes simplex virus. What are the symptoms of Urethritis? 75% of women and half of men with Non-gonococcal urethritis infection have no symptoms. Due to this, a person could spread around chlamydia and not know it. When Non-gonococcal urethritis does have symptoms, they tend to be like gonococcal urethritis. These include: redness around the urethra, frequent urination, a discharge from the end of the penis, and a burning sensation when urinating. How do I prevent myself from getting Gonococcal Urethritis?

urethritis Non-Specific. urethritis is a condition that can occur in both men and women. General Information. urethritis is best treated as early as possible.
http://www.well-net.com/STD/urethrts.html
Urethritis - Non-Specific
Urethritis is a condition that can occur in both men and women. The urethra is the tube that starts at the base of the bladder through which the urine flows out of the body. In the male the urethra passes through the prostate gland and then travels through the penis emptying at the tip of the penis. In women the urethra is very short only 2.5 to 5.5 centimeters. The urethra in both men and women is basically the same except for its length. The urethra is lined by epithelial (special skin cells) and has many glands that empty into it. It is in these glands that bacteria accumulate and can cause infection which leads to what we call urethritis.
Diagram: 1.
Diagram: 2.
The Causes
The Symptoms
Initially the symptoms may be tingling and burning within the urethra. These symptoms can progress to frank pain and discharge. The discharge associated with nonspecific urethritis is usually watery but it can also be pus-like (thick solid color, grey, green, yellow) or bloody. There may be very either little discharge or copious discharge. In men, the discharge may stain their underwear and in women, the discharge is often confused with vaginal discharge. Pain can range from slight to severe and it may occur only at urination or continuously.
The Diagnosis
Treatment
Treatment for chlamydia trachomatis is generally tetracycline or erythromycin 500 mg. every 6 hours for 10 to 14 days. For NSU alone Tetracycline 500 mg. every 6 hours for 10 days is usually more than adequate. For trichomonas metronidazole (Flagyl) either 2 grams as a single dose at bed time or 500 mg every 8 hours for 5 to 7 days may be used. When candida exists, oral antimonilia agents are used but treatment may require a Urologic evaluation as strictures, chemical irritations or possible tumors may exist. Not infrequently after treatment for gonorrhea a NSU may develop. A course of tetracycline is usually prescribed at this point. Generally, partners should always be treated for gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomonas and candida. There is no specific curative treatment for herpes but Zovirax (acyclovar) can be used to limit and prevent subsequent attacks.

Urethritis, Non-Specific Urethritis and Urethral Irritation
What is Urethritis?
Urethritis is inflammation of the urethra (the passage in the penis that urine and semen pass through). It can be caused by chlamydia or gonorrhea, or other bacteria. Frequently, however, the exact cause is never identified. There are two types of urethritis 1) those with a known cause for example chlamydia and/or gonorrhea, 2) Non-specific Urethritis. 3) Urethral Irritation. Urethritis can also be recurrent or persistent and on occasion may reoccur after treatment. Each of these subjects are covered below.
What are the Symptoms of Urethritis in General?
Often there are no symptoms at all; but when symptoms are present, they may include:
  • Discharge (milky or pus-like) from the penis Stinging or burning during urination Itching, tingling, burning or irritation inside the penis.
How is Urethritis Diagnosed?
The most important test is a culture of the urethra, a swab is gently inserted into the urethra and a culture is taken. The swab is then examined in the laboratory for signs of infection. Swabs should be taken 3 or 4 hours after you last passed urine. It usually takes several days for final chlamydia and gonorrhea culture results to become available.
Non Specific Urethritis (NSU)
When the cultures are negative gonorrhea or chlamydia, the urethritis is said to be a Non-Specific Urethritis, or NSU. The specific cause of NSU is generally not known, however antibiotic treatment is effective. Although NSU does not cause symptoms in women, female partners of men with NSU may need to be examined and even, on occasion, treated.

Ministry of Health Services, STD Series
Health File - #08b, March 1998
Nongonococcal Urethritis (NGU)
What is NGU?
A disease in men caused by an infection in the urethra (the tube that carries urine through the penis).
How is it spread?
By having sex with someone who has an infection.
What are the symptoms?
A slight burning feeling when passing water, an itching inside the penis, or a clear to creamy white fluid from the end of the penis. Some men with NGU show no symptoms, or the signs may be so mild that they go unnoticed. Usually, the symptoms are seen or felt more in the morning.
How do I know I have NGU?
You must have a medical exam that includes tests from the penis.
What if I don't get it treated?
If not treated, the infection can spread, causing damage to other organs in your body.
What is the treatment?
Antibiotic pills. Follow instructions carefully for taking the pills, and continue to take them until all pills are used up. People you have had sex with, male and female, must also be tested and may need to be treated too. (Some of the germs that cause NGU in men may cause cervicitis in women. Cervicitis is an infection in the cervix - the opening of the womb.) It is very important that you do not have sex until you and your partner(s) have finished the treatment.

Urethritis / Urethral Syndrome
Signs, symptoms and indicators
Conditions that suggest it Contributing risk factors It can lead to... Urethritis is inflammation of the urethra. It is also often called NSU (non-specific urethritis) or NGU (non-gonococcal urethritis) and it is usually a sexually-transmitted disease. The classic signs and symptoms of NSU are burning upon urination and a light discharge . While a heavier, thicker discharge may occur, this is usually more suggestive of gonorrhea . At times there may be no discharge at all and the only complaint may be a urethral itch.
The most common cause of NSU is a microorganism called Chlamydia . It may also be caused by Ureaplasma (a different microorganism) or with lesser frequency a variety of others. Often it is difficult to know the exact cause of non-specific urethritis (hence the term "non-specific"). Because NSU is a syndrome caused by different organisms, treatment results are inconsistent. Current medical treatment recommendations usually include antibiotics (Tetracycline or Doxycycline or Erthyromycin) and each organism that causes urethritis must be treated with the specific medication that is most effective against it. Other drugs are also commonly used. Because one's sexual partner may also carry the infecting microorganism, it is important to treat both simultaneously.
Urethral Syndrome
This refers to a primarily female syndrome in which women suffer from irritative bladder symptoms (urinary frequency, urgency, burning, and more) in the absence of any objective urologic findings. That is to say, when they under medical evaluation their physicians discover no specific findings to account for their symptoms.
