For a general description, see ulcerative colitis Extraintestinal manifestations of ulcerative colitis are also present and most frequently involve the musculoskeletal system. Peripheral joint arthralgias and arthritis, sacroiliitis, spondylitis and miscellaneous abnormalities may be evident ( Fig.1 In the peripheral joints the findings appear to represent an acute synovitis, predominantly monoarticular or pauciarticular. Asymmetric inflammation of the proximal interphalangeal joints of the toes is typical. On radiographs, however, the two most characteristic findings are soft tissue swelling and periarticular osteoporosis. Ankylosing spondylitis may coexist in patients with ulcerative colitis, but the spondylitis in ulcerative colitis is poorly correlated with activity of the bowel disease. As in classic ankylosing spondylitis, an increased frequency of the histocompatibility antigen HLA-B27 may be noted. Radiographically, the spinal and sacroiliac joint abnormalities in ulcerative colitis are virtually indistinguishable from those in classic ankylosing spondylitis (see

Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis at Mayo Clinic in Rochester
Ulcerative colitis is a common form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) . It involves chronic inflammation of the innermost lining of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. Some people have no symptoms after the initial one or two episodes. Others have recurrent episodes of abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever or bleeding. Patients with ulcerative colitis may be divided into three groups based on the extent of their disease. These are proctitis (involving the rectum, the last part of the colon near the anus), left-sided colitis (from the rectum to the splenic flexure or area below the ribs on the left side), and pancolitis (the most extensive form). The type of disease is important in determining the treatment and prognosis.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic at Mayo Clinic in Rochester
Mayo Clinic in Rochester offers an integrated, multidisciplinary team of specialists to diagnose and treat ulcerative colitis. In most cases, patients are diagnosed, and treatment, including surgery, is begun in three to four days.

Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis at Mayo Clinic
(Synonyms: proctitis, left-sided colitis, pancolitis) Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease affecting only the colon (large intestine). Patients with this disease are divided into three groups based on the extent of their disease:
  • Proctitis (which involves the rectum, the last part of the colon near the anus) Left-sided colitis (from the rectum to the splenic flexure or area below the ribs on the left side) Pancolitis (involvement more extensive than the other two)
The site of involvement is important in treatment and prognosis. Ulcerative colitis is chronic, like Crohn's disease . Typically, patients will have periods where they have few or no symptoms (remissions), but flare-ups are common. Advances in therapy have helped physicians improve the overall quality of life in patients by better treating flare-ups and lengthening remissions. Mayo Clinic has doctors with extensive experience in treating this disorder at all three Mayo Clinic locations.

http://www.calgaryhealthregion.ca/hlthconn/items/uc.htm
Ulcerative Colitis Ulcerative colitis is a condition where there is inflammation and the development of sores (ulcers) on the lining of the large bowel (colon and rectum). Ulcerative colitis does not involve the small bowel. When the condition persists over a long period of time, new inflammation and ulcers continue to form and the old inflammation and ulceration results in significant scarring of the bowel lining. The cause of ulcerative colitis is unclear. 75% of the cases of ulcerative colitis develop in young adults (before the age of 30 years).* Symptoms of ulcerative colitis include:
  • diarrhea
  • blood, pus or mucus in bowel movements
  • loss of appetite
  • dehydration
  • weight loss
  • weakness
  • fatigue
  • mild fever
  • lower abdominal pain and cramping, especially on the left side
  • attacks are unpredictable. They tend to come and go with varying symptom-free periods.
Complications:
  • severe bleedings
  • bowel perforation
  • stretching and enlargement of the large bowel
  • people who have ulcerative colitis may also develop complications in other parts of the body, such as arthritis, ulcers in the mouth, skin rashes and inflammation of the inner eyelids and whites of the eye.
  • long-standing ulcerative colitis (over 10 years) can increase the risk for developing bowel cancer. People who have had ulcerative colitis for many years should arrange with their doctor for regular bowel cancer screening.

Hi, I'm making this page to share my experience with ulcerative colitis, and I advise others to do the same, there isn't a lot of information out there for us. I'm not a doctor, and you should follow your doctor's advice about diet and medicine. I found out I had UC about two years ago when suddenly I couldn't leave my bathroom. Anything I ate went right through me and blood was also coming out, which was freaking me out. So, I went to the doctors had some tests done that nobody should have to go though, you all know what I'm talking about. The first one they did said it would only last a minute, so I opted to not be put asleep. WARNING: TELL THEM TO PUT YOU TO SLEEP! It was the longest 60 second of my life. The second time they needed to stick that camera up there so I was knocked out. Anyway after that hell, they told me I had ulcerative colitis. My doctor said I could eat whatever I wanted, and prescribed 400mg of Asacol to me. I was supposed to take 2 pills 3 times a day before meals. It actually worked very well for me, and I was back to normal, but if I got off those pills I was locked in the bathroom again. You can visit the Asacol website

What is ulcerative colitis?
Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) include a group of chronic disorders that cause inflammation or ulceration in the small and large intestines. Most often IBD is classified as:
  • ulcerative colitis - causes ulceration and inflammation of the inner lining of the colon and rectum. Crohn's disease - an inflammation that extends into the deeper layers of the intestinal wall, and also may affect other parts of the digestive tract, including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and small intestine.
Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease cause similar symptoms that often resemble other conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome. The correct diagnosis may take some time. Inflammatory bowel disease may also be referred to as colitis, enteritis, ileitis, and proctitis. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease in which the inner lining of the large intestine (colon or bowel) and rectum become inflamed. Inflammation usually begins in the rectum and lower (sigmoid) intestine and spreads upward to the entire colon. Ulcerative colitis rarely affects the small intestine, except for the lower section, the ileum.

The treatment of active ulcerative colitis largely relies on the nonspecific antiinflammatory effects of aminosalicylates (mesalamine and sulfasalazine) and the broad immunosuppressive actions of corticosteroids and other potent immunomodulators. Data from animal models and patients with ulcerative colitis have highlighted the importance of the enteric microflora in the pathogenesis of the disease, yet in clinical trials, antibiotics and probiotics have had only limited efficacy against active disease. In ulcerative colitis, in contrast to Crohn's disease, there are few clinical data on the value of infliximab and other biologic agents.

    Transdermal Nicotine for Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis has an incidence of 5-10 per 100,000 in the UK. For some time a lower incidence has been noticed in people who smoke cigarettes. A fine case-control study from Chicago put some figures on this, and the observation was followed by randomised trials where patients were treated with nicotine to allow us to establish causation and the magnitude of the effect.
    Case-control study
One hundred patients with ulcerative colitis were matched for age and sex with community control subjects, and selected at random for a telephone interview to collect information on smoking habits, race, religion, income, occupation and education [1]. Smoking habits at the onset of symptoms were analysed using logistic regression.
Compared with those who had never smoked, current smokers were much less likely to have ulcerative colitis (odds ratio 0.13, 95% CI 0.05 to 0.38) - that is they were about eight times less likely to have ulcerative colitis. Former smokers' risk was no different from non-smokers.
    Transdermal nicotine treatment
Two randomised studies have tried to answer the obvious question - does nicotine help in treating ulcerative colitis?

What is ulcerative colitis? Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are the illnesses called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) . These two diseases are very much alike. In ulcerative colitis, the inner lining of the large intestine or bowel (colon) and the rectum become inflamed (irritated or raw and swollen). Ulcerative colitis can affect the entire colon, but it is usually in the rectum and the lower part of the colon. Inflammation from ulcerative colitis can make the colon empty often, which causes diarrhea. Ulcers form, causing bleeding. Crohn's disease is usually in the lower part of the small intestine or bowel (ileum). However, it can affect any part of the digestive tract, from where food is taken in (the mouth) to where food comes out (the anus). About one million Americans have IBD, inflammatory bowel disease. People of all age groups can get ulcerative colitis, but it usually begins between the ages of 15 and 30. Ulcerative colitis affects males and females equally. IBD is more common in Caucasians.

    ... Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative Colitis Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes inflammation (painful swelling) and sores (ulcers) in the top layers of the lining of the large intestine. The inflammation usually occurs in the rectum and lower part of the colon (large intestine), although it may affect the entire organ. Ulcerative colitis may also be called colitis, ileitis or proctitis. This disease is often difficult to diagnose because symptoms are very similar to inflammatory bowel disease and Crohn's disease. Symptoms About half of all patients have mild symptoms, including:
    • Abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea (most common symptoms) Fatigue Weight loss Loss of appetite Rectal bleeding Loss of body fluids and nutrients
Other medical problems that crop up as a result of ulcerative colitis include arthritis, eye inflammation, liver disease, osteoporosis (loss of bone mass), skin rashes, anemia and kidney stones. These conditions are usually mild and go away when the colitis is treated. Causes and Risk Factors Affecting men and women equally, ulcerative colitis most often occurs in people 15 to 40 years of age. As with other inflammatory bowel disease conditions, ulcerative colitis has no known cause. The disease appears to run in some families. There is also some evidence that the body's immune (disease-fighting) system reacts to a virus or bacteria by causing ongoing inflammation in the intestinal wall. However, this has not been proven.
