Table of Contents Conditions Ulcerative Colitis Also Listed As: Signs and Symptoms Causes Risk Factors Diagnosis ... Supporting Research Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic disease that causes inflammation and ulcers (open sores) in the innermost layers of the large intestine. UC is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the general name for diseases that cause inflammation in the intestines. In UC, swelling typically occurs in the rectum and lower colon, but the inflammation can spread throughout the entire colon. The ulcers bleed and produce pus and mucus, and the inflammation causes the colon to empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea. UC is a rare, but serious disease that affects 50 out of every 100,000 people in the United States. Although the condition most commonly affects those between the ages of 15 and 35, children and older adults may also develop the disease. UC occurs five times more frequently in those with a Jewish heritage than it does in the general population. Although most people with UC can be successfully treated without surgery, roughly 25% will need a colectomy (surgical removal of the colon). Signs and Symptoms The most common signs and symptoms of UC include abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. The symptoms can range from mild to severe and may come on either very suddenly or more gradually.

http://www.treating-ulcerative-colitis.com/
Ulcerative Colitis Treatment Options
The purpose of medical treatment is to control the episodes of inflammation and diarrhea that accompany flare-ups of ulcerative colitis (UC). Following inflammation and diarrhea treatment, long-term relapse prevention and modulation (controlling) efforts are generally begun.
Diarrhea Treatments
Specific medications are used just for diarrhea treatment. Anticholinergic drugs are commonly used in mild cases of diarrhea, one dose early in the day and after each episode during the day. Severe cases are treated with stronger medications. Side effects are an issue with all diarrhea treatment drugs, and some of them can cause more complicated ulcerative colitis conditions, such as toxic dilation of the colon.
Treatment for Inflammation
Inflammation is generally treated with anti-inflammatory medications, which are administered orally, intravenously, or, as an enema or suppository. Suppositories are a more preferred method of administration for proctitis (inflammation of the rectum alone). After inflammation subsides, anti-inflammatory use is tapered off. Another function of anti-inflammatory medication is pain control.

TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction Causes Symptoms Risk factors Complications Diagnosis Dietary considerations Symptom management Medications Surgical procedures Resources Introduction Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a general term that covers two disorders: ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. There is some evidence to suggest that they are part of a biologic continuum, but at this time they are considered to be distinct disorders with somewhat different treatment options. The basic distinctions are location and severity. It should be noted that as many as 10% of patients with IBD have findings and symptoms that match the criteria for both disorders, at least in the early stages (a situation called indeterminate colitis). Welcome to my Ulcerative Colitis and Ileostomy Website!
Introduction

Welcome! My name is Alicia and I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in July of 2002 at age 25. I didn't have much success getting it under control, so I elected to have an open proctocolectomy with Brooke ileostomy in March 2003. While I suffered with UC, I often wondered if my life was over, but within 2 months of my operation, I was able to graduate from medical school, begin residency, travel, but most of all, enjoy life again. Though this is a challenge that I would not wish on anyone, I want to dedicate this site to the people dealing with this disease, and to offer hope during those times that I vividly remember going through myself.

What is ulcerative colitis?

Ulcerative colitis
is an chronic, inflammatory bowel disease best known for the damage it does to the colon. The colon (also called large intestine) is the last part of your bowel that functions in the storage of stool as well as water absorption. The scientific names you'll hear to describe the layers of the colon include mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, and adventitia. The mucosa is the innermost part of the tube that stool actually comes in contact with as it passes throughout the colon. It is also the part of the colon that is affected with the ulcers characteristic of UC.
Some features of ulcerative colitis include:
Symptoms - The most common symptoms are blood in the stool and tenesmus (the strong urge to have a bowel movement, even if it is only a few drops of blood.) Many people also experience mucus in the stool and diarrhea as well. How severe the disease is when you first notice the symptoms is extremely variable. Mine started with just a few drops of blood without diarrhea, where other people presented with sudden and severe bloody diarrhea. Other sypmtoms of a flare include fever, weight loss, poor appetite, nausea, and pain.

Credits Should I have surgery to cure ulcerative colitis? Introduction This information will help you understand your health care choices and what the results may be, whether you choose to share in the decision-making process or to rely on your doctor's recommendation.
Key points about surgery for ulcerative colitis
Your decision about whether to have surgery will involve several issues, including the severity of your illness, concern about the risk of further disease, and the risks of having surgery. Consider the following when making your decision:
  • Surgery is rarely done for mild ulcerative colitis . Many people who have mild colitis have only occasional symptoms that they can control with antidiarrhea medication. The only cure for ulcerative colitis is surgery to remove the colon and the lining of the rectum. This surgery removes any tissue in which ulcerative colitis could return.

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel diseases. It can cause frequent bouts of diarrhoea that may contain blood and mucus. It can also cause abdominal pain. ... The cause of ulcerative colitis is not fully understood. Inflammatory bowel disease tends to run in families and 10 to 20% of people with either ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease are likely to have at least one other person in their family affected. Researchers are also looking at the links between environmental factors such as nutrition and exposure to various infections.

Symptoms
The main symptom of ulcerative colitis is frequent, watery diarrhoea, which may be accompanied by cramping abdominal pain and the passage of blood and/or mucus. When the disease affects only the rectum - the final portion of the bowel, it is known as proctitis. When ulcerative colitis affects more of the colon than the rectum alone, symptoms are more severe. The symptoms vary according to the degree of inflammation in the bowel and whether or not the lining of the bowel has become ulcerated. In addition to the symptoms already mentioned, there may also be:
