Welcome to my Ulcerative Colitis website
"A site made by a sufferer for sufferer's"
    Welcome
Hi, welcome to my website dedicated to the sufferers of Ulcerative Colitis. I am Jason, a 17 year old male Ulcerative Colitis sufferer from England.
I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis at the age of 15 and as we all now, being diagnosed with such an illness, at any time of life, is one rather scary event. One of the first things I did was go looking for answers and information about this illness. I hope that this site will provide some help to people who have just been diagnosed and those who have suffered with this illness for a long time. Even though I have been diagnosed for 2 years now, I have decided to include an online diary of my illness. I'll update it as regularly as I can and keep you all up to date with whats happening. Other sections of this site include a section where, if they want to, people can submit the stories of their illness's for others to read. For many being diagnosed with this disease is the first time we ever hear the term "Ulcerative Colitis", and I think that it helps to find out that your not alone in going through this ordeal.

Medical Information Ulcerative Colitis and Marijuana Annals of Internal Medicine, Volume 112, Number 6, 15 March, 1990, p. 471 To the Editor: The apparent protective effect of cigarette smoking on ulcerative colitis (1) suggests that inhaled plant products might affect the disease process. We report a case suggesting a relation between ulcerative colitis and smoking marijuana. In 1972, a 23-year-old woman developed abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. Sigmoidoscopy to 15 cm revealed diffuse cobblestone ulcerations, and a single-contrast barium enema showed numerous small marginal irregularities in the distal sigmoid and rectum. Ulcerative colitis was diagnosed, and her symptoms waxed and waned despite treatment with sulfasalazine, librax, and intermittent prednisone. Discouraged, she stopped all medications in 1975. In 1976, she noted that smoking marijuana resulted in fewer stools, more stable body weight, and fewer, milder exacerbations . Her typical intake was a pipeful once or twice daily, which she maintained despite her dislike for its euphoric effects. Cessation repeatedly resulted in exacerbations within a few weeks; resumption led to some improvement in a day or two, with maximal effect after several weeks. She was smoking marijuana daily when, after having 2 months of symptoms, she was hospitalized at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in 1983. She was febrile and had an erythrocyte sedimentation rate of 103 mm/h. Sigmoidoscopy to 16 cm showed diffuse small friable ulcerations with granularity. A biopsy of the lower rectal fold showed marked chronic inflammation extending into the submucosa without granulomas. She improved promptly with prednisone. At home she resumed taking marijuana. Over 15 months her prednisone dose was tapered and sulfasalazine therapy begun. Sigmoidoscopy to 20 cm was normal, and a single-contrast barium enema showed a diffuse granular pattern with a "pipe-like" apearance, compatible with inactive colitis.

How is it treated? Conventional treatment of UC includes avoiding raw fruits and vegetables . Sometimes a milk-free diet is suggested. These drugs must be used with extreme caution to prevent toxic dilation of the colon. Therapy with corticosteroids (e.g., hydrocortisone, orally or as an enema) is commonly prescribed. Case Study, by Leonid M. Katkovsky, MD
Abstract : Active ulcerative colitis may preclude issuance of a medical certificate. An authorization for special issuance can be granted in well-controlled, inactive ulcerative colitis. The medical certificate would be time-limited for a period of 1 year and require that the airman give the FAA a current status of his medical condition at that time.
    Background
A year-old first officer of a major commercial airline sub-mitted a new application for a first-class medical certificate. He had a long history of ulcerative colitis, which was quiescent until early January 2000. While in flight training, he developed shortness of breath and tachycardia. His local physician noted a hematocrit of 27 and iron level of 5. The applicant was immediately started on Asacol, Prednisone, Ciprofloxacin, and oral iron. There was a rapid improvement of symptoms. He did not lose any weight. After 2 months of treatment his hematocrit returned to normal. History and physical exam.

Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes inflammation and sores, called ulcers, in the top layers of the lining of the large intestine. The inflammation usually occurs in the rectum and lower part of the colon, but it may affect the entire colon. Ulcerative colitis rarely affects the small intestine except for the lower section, called the ileum. Ulcerative colitis may also be called colitis, ileitis, or proctitis. The inflammation makes the colon empty frequently, causing diarrhea. Ulcers form in places where the inflammation has killed colon lining cells; the ulcers bleed and produce pus and mucus. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the general name for diseases that cause inflammation in the intestines. Ulcerative colitis can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and to another type of IBD called Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease differs from ulcerative colitis because it causes inflammation deeper within the intestinal wall. Crohn's disease usually occurs in the small intestine, but it can also occur in the mouth, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, large intestine, appendix, and anus. Ulcerative colitis occurs most often in people ages 15 to 40, although children and older people sometimes develop the disease. Ulcerative colitis affects men and women equally and appears to run in some families.

This gross appearance is characteristic for ulcerative colitis. The most intense inflammation begins at the lower right in the sigmoid colon and extends upward and around to the ascending colon. At the lower left is the ileocecal valve with a portion of terminal ileum that is not involved. Inflammation with ulcerative colitis tends to be continuous along the mucosal surface and tends to begin in the rectum. The mucosa becomes eroded, as in this photograph, which shows only remaining islands of mucosa called "pseudopolyps".

    Information About Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a disease of the large intestine (colon) characterized by inflammation of the lining of the intestinal tract and rectal bleeding. It, along with anther condition called Crohn's disease, falls into the category of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease that comes in waves or "flare-ups." The most common symptoms of a flare-up are bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain. Excessive blood loss can lead to fatigue as a result of anemia.
Ulcerative colitis is NOT irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Cramping, gas, bloating, and changes in bowel regularity are common with irritable bowel syndrome.
    Who is Affected?
Though ulcerative colitis can occur at any age in a person's life, the most common groups affected are the 15 to 30 and 50 to 70 year olds. Reasons for this are not known, and the etiology, or origin of the disease, is not clear. An estimated one million Americans suffer from IBD, split about equally between ulcerative colitis and Crohn's.
    Possible Causes of UC
Suspected causes for this inflammatory bowel disease are:
    Genetics
    Diet
    Infections
    Immune deficiencies in the bowels.
