Researchers at our Institute hypothesize that two forms of trichotillomaniamay exist. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF trichotillomania?
http://www.bio-behavioral.com/trichotillomania.asp
Trichollomania Trichollomania is characterized by the repetitive pulling on one's hair resulting in noticeable hair loss. Patients typically experience an increasing sense on tension immediately before pulling out the hair or when attempting to resist the behavior. Pleasure, gratification or relief is felt upon hair pulling. Researchers at our Institute hypothesize that two forms of trichotillomania may exist. Individuals who experience tension before pulling and gratification upon pulling may have a form of trichotillomania thought to be a type of obsessive compulsive spectrum disorder. For others who experience no awareness or pleasure, hair pulling may be a habit. Further research will help clarify these issues. The "obsessive-compulsive spectrum" refers to a series of major psychiatric conditions defined by the presence of obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are intrusive ideas, thoughts, or images that cause much anxiety and distress. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce the anxiety produced by obsessions. You may have one without the other. The current psychiatric diagnostic manual (DSM-IV) provides the following definitions:
  • An increasing sense of tension immediately before pulling out the hair or when attempting to resist the behavior.

trichotillomania Home Forums Privacy Advertising ... Home On this page... Trichotillomania Trichotillomania affects 2-3% of all people with hair loss making it a fairly common condition. Studies have identified the scalp as being the most commonly affected area. Approximately 70% of cases involve scalp hair loss, 50% involve eyebrows and or eyelashes, 30% include pubic hair, 20% body hair, and about 10% involve facial hair. As well as plucking the hair, affected individuals may then chew or eat the hair. Hair eating is known as trichophagia while hair chewing may result in hair balls (trichobezoars). About 40% of cases involve hair chewing while 10% of affected individuals eat their hair. Eating hair is rather unwise as it is very irritating to the stomach and may lead to digestion problems and ulcers. The affected individual is most often unaware of what they are doing and arrive at the dermatology clinic complaining of hair loss from an unknown cause. Dermatologists have been known to resort to making a video of the individual to prove to them that they are unconsciously plucking their hair. Trichotillomania can affect both children and adults although the mean age of first onset is 13 years. Both boys and girls are affected in childhood but the adult version of trichotillomania almost always affects women (Jaspers 1996).

Back to: Dec 2002 A 4year old girl in our family plucks her hair out and eats it. She has never had a haircut but is completly bald. There is more to her behavior than just pulling her hair out but I will not get into it. It seems to me that this behavior needs some attention. Does anyone have anything to say about it? Please help. worried relative This condition is called Trichotilomania. You can surely find information on the web. It is treatable. Good luck It's called trichotillomania and it's a treatable, obsessive- compulsive type disorder. There's a place in the South Bay, Santa Cruz maybe?, dedicated to helping people with it. Their web address is http://www.trich.org . Get her some help while she's young; maybe it'll be easier to deal with. anon Her condition is called tricatellamania (sp?)...sorry, don't know how to spell it. I have it too and never got treated for it and wished that i did. I had it since I was 15 years old. I've heard that it is more common in women than in men, and it is usually associated with some kind of childhood traumatic experience. I've had some bad experiences from my childhood, but I never talked to a psychiatrist about it to know wether or not it is related. Apparently there is a specific medication that helps with it. One of the symptoms in older children and adults is shame and embarrasment. That is why i haven't seeked out help. I strongly encourage you to speak up or seek help for this child. It could be a sign that something very stressful or traumatic is going on for her. It shouldn't be ignored. My condition was ignored when I was young...a big mistake. I now have areas of my hair that will never grow back. Anon

Hair is a characteristic of all mammals, though in some species hair is absent at certain stages of life. Hair serves a number of different functions. It provides insulation from cold weather and, in some species, from particularly hot weather. Because hair is often pigmented, it provides coloration. This might serve to camouflage an individual; in some mammals, the pigmentation changes with the seasons, becoming white during the snowy winter, for example.

    By Morrisa Sherman
"So how did you do it, Evan?" asked Mr. Gillespie. "Do what?" I countered, a tad too casually for the obvious victory. "'Do what' he says, 'do what'. Boy, we thought she was just gone, gone, gone! We brought her back from the hospital because Marta was getting sick from her own anti-depressants she took for missing the poor kid, but we couldn't handle her any better. When I sent her back, she had gone through the hair on her head, her eyebrows, her lashes, and, well, her whole body, and I had to physically restrain her from tearing out any more of her fingernails. We thought you were a complete fool to take her on, and just look at her! She looks like my pretty angel again!" Simone sat cross legged on the floor holding a steaming cup of tea in both hands. She smiled at her father shyly, and she was indeed pretty. Pale, yes, trembling, yes, but a thin, short halo of fine baby hair clung about her head, and her eyes looked almost natural with their new, soft lashes and eyebrows. "It's very difficult, Daddy," she said, "you know me, you know how hard it is for me not to turn it back on myself, but Evan helps me." "Well yes, clearly! And you've done a wonderful job, Evan, but how?"

    TRICHOTILLOMANIA SYMPTOMS
The primary trichotillomania symptom is recurrent pulling of enough hair to cause significant hair loss. Many times, this hair loss results in balding of the area being pulled. Areas of pulling include the head, eyebrows, eyelashes, pubic or underarm hair. People suffering from trichotillomania symptoms may attempt to hide or cover bald areas by using hairstyles, scarves or clothing, or makeup. Trichotillomania symptoms of some individuals also may include playing with their hair, chewing on their hair, or digesting hair (trichophagia). They also may pull hair from other people, pets or sweaters. These individuals will commonly deny pulling or chewing, even if observed doing so. Trichotillomania is characterized by a sense of increased tension immediately before pulling or when trying to resist pulling. Stress may fuel pulling, however, it may occur during times of relaxation such as watching television, reading, driving a car, talking on the phone or lying in bed. Another trichotillomania symptom for some individuals is a sense of pleasure, gratification or relief when pulling occurs. The persistence of trichotillomania symptoms can vary considerably as well as the intensity. For some individuals the urge to pull hair can be so strong it makes thinking of anything else nearly impossible.

    WHAT IS TRICHOTILLOMANIA?
Trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder in which a person has an overwhelming urge to pull out the hair from their scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, or other parts of the body, resulting in noticeable hair loss. Trichotillomania is estimated to affect one to two percent of the population, or four to six million Americans. Trichotillomania is a term coined by a French dermatologist in 1889 to describe the compulsive or irresistible urge he saw in patients to pluck out their hair. The word trichotillomania is derived from the Greek thix , hair; tillein , to pull; and mania . Unfortunately, this breakdown makes the name inaccurate because people with trichotillomania are not manic. Someone who suffers from trichotillomania will often experience a sense of increasing tension before hair pulling and can feel a sense of relief afterwards. Sometimes people even express a degree of pleasure after having "pulled." Who suffers from trichotillomania? Trichotillomania seems to strike most frequently in the pre- or early adolescent years. In children it seems to affect as many boys as girls, however, by the adolescent years there is a higher percentage of females. Overall, roughly 1.5% of males and 3.5% of females in the United States display significant hair pulling

It is currently defined as an impulse-control disorder, but there are still questions about how it should be classified. It may seem, at times, to resemble a habit, an addiction, a tic disorder or an obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is estimated to affect one to two percent of the population, or four to eleven million Americans.
