Memory loss may result from bilateral damage to the limbic system of the brain responsible for memory storage, processing, and recall. (Illustration by Electronic Illustrators Group).
    Definition
Amnesia refers to the loss of memory. Memory loss may result from two-sided (bilateral) damage to parts of the brain vital for memory storage, processing, or recall (the limbic system, including the hippocampus in the medial temporal lobe).
    Description
Amnesia can be a symptom of several neurodegenerative diseases; however, people whose primary symptom is memory loss (amnesiacs), typically remain lucid and retain their sense of self. They may even be aware that they suffer from a memory disorder. People who experience amnesia have been instrumental in helping brain researchers determine how the brain processes memory. Until the early 1970s, researchers viewed memory as a single entity. Memory of new experiences, motor skills, past events, and previous conditioning were grouped together in one system that relied on a specific area of the brain. If all memory were stored in the same way, it would be reasonable to deduce that damage to the specific brain area would cause complete memory loss. However, studies of amnesiacs counter that theory. Such research demonstrates that the brain has multiple systems for processing, storing, and drawing on memory.

    Types of amnesia
What is amnesia? An inability to recall information that is stored in the memory is called amnesia. Learn all about the different types of this disorder!
An inability to recall information that is stored in the memory is called amnesia. There are three types of memory affected by amnesia including immediate memory, intermediate memory and long term memory. When the immediate memory is affected the person will have difficulty recalling the events that occurred in the preceding few seconds. Intermediate memory is affected when a person cannot recall events that happened from within a few seconds to a few days prior to the cause of the amnesia. With long term memory loss a person will be unable to recall events that occurred further back in time. bodyOffer(19159) In most cases the memory is divided into short and long term. When there is damage or disease present in the area of the brain regions that are concerned with memory functions, amnesia occurs. There are several known causes of this type of damage including injuries to the head, degenerative disorders, infections such as encephalitis, thiamine deficiencies such as that found in Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, brain tumors, strokes, subarachnoid hemorrhage and some psychiatric illnesses. There are different types of amnesia that can affect a person including transient global amnesia, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, Korsakoff's amnesia, retrograde amnesia and anterograde amnesia. The prognosis for transient global amnesia is good with the confusion quickly clearing up and a total recovery. With Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome patients are given thiamine intravenously to correct the problem. With Korsakoff's amnesia the administration of thiamine has been known to correct encephalopathy but not the amnesia. In some cases where alcohol is avoided and the illnesses that are contributing to the amnesia are treated this condition may gradually disappear. Other forms of amnesia may last for minutes or hours and then disappear without treatment. But in cases where severe brain injury has caused the amnesia, it could be permanent. Since the memory tends to be involved with many different brain functions, literally any type of brain damage is capable of causing a loss of memory.

San Gerardo, 8.

Case Reference No. CC-1197-07 A 67-year-old man with a history of coronary artery disease, hypertension, and peripheral vascular disease presented to his cardiologist with exertional angina. Arteriography demonstrated a tight stenosis in the left subclavian artery, proximal to his LIMA graft (Fig. 1). There was retrograde flow in the left vertebral artery with diminished flow in the LIMA. This phenomenon has been termed the "coronary-subclavian steal" syndrome. Following 6-mm PTA, during which the balloon was fully inflated without any residual waist, the result was suboptimal (Fig. 2). A Palmaz 394 stent was then deployed with a Medi-Tech PEMT 7-mm x 4-cm balloon. The stent was dilated to 8 mm, and the proximal third was then flared with a 10-mm balloon; this yielded an excellent angiographic result (Fig. 3). The patient became acutely "confused" (patient's words) following the final angiogram. He was very anxious and repeatedly asked if he had had a heart attack, "why am I here?", and "who are you?" The patient had received 5,000 U of heparin and was taking both aspirin and Ticlid. The patient was transferred to the CCU for further monitoring and received no further treatment. An informal neurology consult yielded a telephone diagnosis of transient global ischemia (TGA) and reassurance. Upon arrival in the CCU, the patient's mental status was improving and within 1 hour the amnesia had completely resolved. The patient was observed overnight and discharged home the next morning to continue on his previous pharmaceutical regimen. Arm pressures were symmetrical (50-mm-Hg systolic gradient prior to treatment) and his angina had been alleviated completely.
