Serotonin and Dopamine
So tryptophan may function to increase serotonin levels and better maintain balance between serotoninergic neurons and dopaminergic neurons. This seems a reasonable mechanism considering the known sensitivity of serotonin synthesis to the availability of tryptophan. The first step in the synthesis of serotonon is the hydroxylation of tryptophan, and the tryptophan hydroxylase enzyme is typically only half saturated with substrate (tryptophan). Since tryptophan hydroxylation is the rate-limiting step (the bottleneck), serotonin production is strongly influenced by tryptophan availability. The researchers then studied differences in the binding of radioactive iodobenzamide between the more-affected and less-affected twins. Iodobenzamide is a drug that selectively binds to dopamine D2 receptors. Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scans localized differences to the caudate nucleus. All of the twins with the more severe symptoms had heightened binding to caudate D2 receptors. The twins with the milder symptoms exhibited lesser binding.

Molecular Genetics Inheritance Population Genetics Medical Physiology ... Social Issues Introduction Tourette syndrome (or Tourette Disorder) is a neurological disorder, which can be classified by tics (involuntary sudden movements and vocalizations), attention problems (which can be similar to those ADHD) and obsessive compulsiveness (which can be similar to OCD). There are over 200,000 people in the world currently with Tourette’s. Only on the past few years has Tourette Syndrome (TS) been thought to be genetic. While the exact location of the TS gene has not been found yet, nor do scientists know yet which chromosome it is on, tests are currently being done to find the genome that causes TS. Among children, the symptoms for TS include tics, attention problems and obsessive compulsions. As the individual grows older, generally, tics start to decrease in severity and occurrence, however, other problems will arise like depression. A French physician named Gilles de la Tourette discovered Tourrete Syndrome in 1885; Tourrete’s syndrome is a lifelong disorder that begins at around the age of five to seven, where such symptoms as ticks will appear. (Peschel and Howe, 1992.) The first patient is thought to be Marquise de Dampierre (1825), who was the oldest person to show symptoms for Tourrete’s. Now, one and six per thousand are thought to have TS.

The Organization
The Tourette Syndrome Camp Organization (TSCO) is a 501 (c)(3) tax exempt non-profit organization dedicated to promoting camping opportunities for children with Tourette Syndrome (TS) and its associated disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD).
The Program
The Illinois Tourette Syndrome Camp, founded in 1994, is a residential camping program designed for girls and boys ages 8 - 16+ whose primary diagnosis is TS, and to a lesser degree, OCD and ADD/ADHD.
The goal of the camp is to allow children with TS an opportunity to meet other children, share similar experiences and coping mechanisms in a fun, safe and positive environment.
The TS camp is run concurrently with a traditional camp week. While there are separate cabins for the TS campers, all programming is done with the rest of the camp. However, we do hold rap sessions with the TS campers so they have an opportunity to share their experiences with each other.
There is a nurse to handle medication and medical issues for the TS campers.

Abstracts/Annual Meeting Publications Tourette's Syndrome and Dopamine Once dismissed as a behavior flaw, Tourette's syndrome is now known to be an inherited neurological disease. New research is mapping the chemical origin of the disorder characterized by tics, yelps and utterances. Advances may lead to improved treatments that can curb the disruptive symptoms without causing the harsh side effects often seen in today's remedies. A surgeon. A grocery store bagger. A professional athlete. A writer. A construction worker. Each experiences eruptions of tics - repeated, involuntary movements and uncontrollable utterances. Six nose twitches, three foot stomps, a series of eye blinks and a few neck stretches. Some hoot, bark, cough. Some swear.
The diagnosis? Bad habits. Nervousness. Demonic possession. For years the affliction, now known as Tourette's syndrome (TS), was regarded as a "moral" disease. The prescription was a dose of internal will to stop.
Then researchers discovered that a drug, haloperidol, which acts on the brain chemical dopamine, could calm the patient. This suggested that TS was a disorder rooted in altered brain chemistry. Now an increasing number of studies, including imaging research on humans, is providing clues on how dopamine and other factors mediate TS.
