Main Diseases and Conditions
Tourette Syndrome
Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, Tourette syndrome, occurs in about 1 of every 2000 children. It is more likely to occur in boys, especially if they have a first degree relative that also has this disorder, and usually begins between the ages of 2 and 21 years of age. Tics are sudden, repetitive, purposeless motor or vocal expressions or movements. In addition to transient tic disorders and chronic motor tic disorders, Tourette syndrome is a common cause of tics in children. The symptoms of Tourette syndrome include having multiple vocal tics and motor tics , although they don't have to have both types of tics at the same time.

Racing Toward Tourette Syndrome Awareness
June 01, 2004
How could we make taking a dollar from your wallet fun?
Regular readers of cawsnjaws.com know that recently a friend of ours from Frontstretch.com, Dennis Michelsen , lined up a driver, Bill Hoff , to place the cawsnjaws.com and PA-TSA Inc. logos on his Busch car. Unless Bill lands a sponsor between now and the near future, he has committed to running at least four races with the cawsnjaws.com/Tourette Syndrome Awareness car. As anyone who knows the cost of different spots on a Busch car is aware, that’s prime real estate that this very special man is giving us, for no more reason than he’s a great guy. Joshua and I were so moved by the kindnesses extended to us, and seeing that car on the track. The whole concept of ‘cawsnjaws,’ originally a forum at the Frontstretch.com message boards , was to try to combine our love of racing with trying to help people learn about Joshua’s disorder, Tourette Syndrome. The reality of seeing the car, and hearing its name announced over the Nazareth Speedway’s intercom, was overwhelming. The near desperation that we feel to make people aware of this baffling and often-misdiagnosed disorder compels us to never be complacent. We know there is still so much more work to be done. In our own personal lives, we are still struggling with too few doctors knowing how to treat the disorder, and too few teachers, peers, and the public in general knowing how to react to the tics, or body movements, that are a hallmark of Tourette.

Tourette Syndrome Introduction
Tourette syndrome (TS) is an inherited, neurological disorder characterized by multiple involuntary movements and uncontrollable vocalizations called tics that come and go over years. In a few cases, such tics can include inappropriate words and phrases. The disorder is named for Dr. Georges Gilles de la Tourette, the pioneering French neurologist who first described an 86-year-old French noblewoman with the condition in 1885. The symptoms of TS generally appear before the individual is 18 years old. TS can affect people of all ethnic groups; males are affected 3 to 4 times more often than females. It is estimated that 100,000 Americans have full-blown TS, and that perhaps as many as 1 in 200 show a partial expression of the disorder, such as chronic multiple tics or transient childhood tics. The term, "involuntary," used to describe TS tics is sometimes confusing since it is known that most people with TS do have some control over their symptoms. What is not recognized is that the control, which can be exercised

Tourette Syndrome
Introduction
Research Paper Abstracts Research Paper Titles Introduction The diagnostic criteria for Tourette Disorder or Tourette Syndrome (TS) are motor and vocal tics. Tics are usually sudden movements or sounds. The most common motor tics are eye squinting, facial grimacing or head shaking. Common vocal tics are throat clearing, lip smacking or sniffing. The typical age for these tics to begin are 4 or 5 years of age. Boys have the disorder 3 to 9 times more frequently than girls. In most cases the disorder peaks in severity at 10-12 years of age. In about 25% of patients the disorder does not improve until adolescence. In 10% of patients the disorder is severe and persists through adulthood. Medication is often helpful in patients with moderate to severe tics or tics which are severe or unacceptable. The book Children with Tourette Syndrome provides management suggestions for parents and teachers.

"An international perspective on Tourette syndrome: selected findings from 3500 individuals in 22 countries." Note: the selected findings below are based upon clinician reports without determination of inter-rater reliability. Current dataset size is , from active sites in countries (with data from 200 other cases awaiting entry). Another 15 sites have joined but have not yet submitted data. 25 sites have submitted more than 50 cases each. 41% of cases are from Canada, 25% from the USA, and 34% from outside North America. The proportion outside North America is increasing. 71% are from psychiatrists, 23% from neurologists, the remainder from pediatricians and medical geneticists. Females make up 18.6% of the sample (1 female to 4.3 males). The latter ratio has not changed from 2 years ago, but the range is interesting: from to There is an almost linear relationship between the number of comorbid conditions ("Comorbidity Score") and the following:
