SPASMODIC TORTICOLLIS
Spasmodic torticollis, also known as cervical dystonia, is a focal dystonia affecting the muscles in the neck and shoulder. Muscles contract involuntarily, giving rise to abnormal movements and posture of the head, neck, and shoulder. It is usually accompanied by constant and extreme pain. The shoulders may also be uneven and some people experience tremors in the head or arms.
ST afflicts approximately 3 in 10,000 people. More than 83,000 people in the United States currently suffer with spasmodic torticollis.
The disease is a dysfunction of the brain.

Torticollis (aka Wry Neck)
Torticollis is a condition in which the neck muscles are shortened or spasmed causing the head to turn to the side and tilt into an awkward position. Symptoms - Symptoms include an obvious twisting of the head and neck with noticeable muscle spasm and pain upon movement. The pain and muscle spasm will limit the movement of the neck. Causes - The cause may include injury to the neck muscles, poor sleeping position or infection in the throat or neck. Torticollis can also result from a tumor or injury to the brain or spinal cord. In newborns, it may be caused by muscle injury during birth or congenital birth defects. Diagnosis - The diagnosis is based on observation of the aforementioned symptoms and a physical examination. Blood tests, MRI, CT scan, or x-ray may be necessary to rule out infections or tumors. Treatment - Treatment includes physical therapy, heat, stretching and massage of the affected neck muscles. Pain relievers and muscle relaxants may be prescribed as well as anticholinergics and injections of botulinum toxin. Surgical treatments are used only when conservative measures fail. What is torticollis? torticollis is a Latin term that means “twisted neck” and refers only to the posture of the head and neck.

Working toward a straighter tomorrow...One child at a time. Home About NITA Contact Us What is Torticollis? ... 2004 Survey Results What is Torticollis? Torticollis is a Latin term that means “twisted neck” and refers only to the posture of the head and neck. The term torticollis is used to identify a symptom, not a disease or injury. While there are many possible causes of torticollis, for the majority of infants the head tilt is caused by an injury or tightness to a major neck muscle called the sternocleidomastoid muscle. This condition is called Congenital Muscular Torticollis or CMT. The exact reason why the muscle becomes tight or injured is unclear. On occasion, the sternocleidomastoid muscle will become tight secondary to another cause when the head has been tilted for an extended period of time. This is the reason why a physician will take great care in determining the diagnosis. Click here to read about how it is diagnosed.
