The primary presentation of the syndrome is significant, acute pain in the chest or back, along with inflammation of the ligaments (palpable on examination) between the ribs. The most likely cause of Tietze's Syndrome is virus introduction during surgery. Once present, the virus responsible for Tietze's will remain dormant and flare up at times when the patient's immune response increases; i.e., a patient will often have a recurrence of pain and inflammation when she or he catches a common cold . Although patients will often mistake the pain of Tietze's Syndrome for a myocardial infarction or heart attack , it is believed that the syndrome does not progress to cause harm to any organs. Doctors will need to reassure patients that the pain is not associated with a heart attack, and they may need to treat the pain. In some cases, the pain can be severe enough to cause significant but temporary disability to the patient.

Home Costochondritis DESCRIPTION Costochondritis is an inflammation and associated tenderness of the cartilage (i.e., the costochondral joints) that attaches the front of the ribs to the breastbone. Costochondritis causes pain in the lower rib area or upper breastbone. Some patients fear they are having a heart attack. The most severe pain is usually between the breast and the upper abdomen. The pain may be greater when in sitting or reclining positions. Stress may aggravate this condition. Generally the third or fourth ribs are affected. However, any of the seven costochondral junctions may be affected, and more often than not more than one site is involved. The inflammation can involve cartilage areas on both sides of the sternum, but usually is on one side only. Most commonly the cause of costochondritis is classified as 'idiopathic,' or unknown. This means that there is no identifiable cause for the condition. This does not imply that idiopathic costochondritis is any less painful of a condition than if the cause can be identified. The most common known cause of costochondritis is traumatic injury. For example, a car accident where the driver's chest strikes the steering wheel can cause costochondritis by injuring the ribs and cartilage on the front of the chest. Viral infections, usually upper respiratory infections, have also been identified as a cause of costochondritis. The most frequently affected age group is young adults between 20 and 40 years old.

But the most descriptive and accurate name for the actual etiological basis of the condition is Slipping Rib Syndrome. In many cases a rib slips out of place because the ligaments that hold the ribs to the sternum, the sternocostal ligaments, are weak. Without muscles to hold the ribs in place, loose ligaments allow slipping of the rib which causes further stretching of the ligament, manifesting itself by producing severe pain. The loose ribs can also pinch intercostal nerves, sending excruciating pains around the chest into the back. Sternocostal and costochondral ligaments refer pain from the front of the chest to the mid back. Likewise, costovertebral ligament sprains refer pain from the back of the rib segment to the sternum where the rib attaches.
