Purposes of this summary What is screening? Screening for cancer is examination (or testing) of people for early signs of a certain type of cancer even though they have no symptoms. Scientists have studied patterns of cancer in the population to learn which people are more likely to get certain types of cancer. They have also studied what things around us and what things we do in our lives may cause cancer. This information helps doctors recommend who should be screened for certain types of cancer, what types of screening tests people should have, and how often these tests should be done. Not all screening tests are helpful, and most have risks such as bleeding, infection, or pain of the testicle or groin due to a biopsy for an abnormal screening test. For this reason, scientists at the National Cancer Institute are studying many screening tests to find out how useful they are.

General Information About Testicular Cancer
Testicular cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of one or both testicles. The testicles are 2 egg-shaped glands located inside the scrotum (a sac of loose skin that lies directly below the penis ). The testicles are held within the scrotum by the spermatic cord, which also contains the vas deferens and vessels and nerves of the testicles. The testicles are the male sex glands and produce testosterone and sperm Germ cells within the testicles produce immature sperm which travel through a network of tubules (tiny tubes) and larger tubes into the epididymis (a long coiled tube next to the testicles) where the sperm mature and are stored. Almost all testicular cancers start in the germ cells. The two main types of testicular germ cell tumors are seminomas and nonseminomas . These 2 types grow and spread differently and are treated differently. Nonseminomas tend to grow and spread more quickly than seminomas. Seminomas are more sensitive to radiation . A testicular tumor that contains both seminoma and nonseminoma cells is treated as a nonseminoma.

    Description
What is cancer of the testicle?
Cancer of the testicle (also called the testis), a rare kind of cancer in men, is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the tissues of one or both testicles. Sperm (the male germ cells that can join with a female egg to develop into a baby) and male hormones are made in the testicles. There are two testicles located inside of the scrotum (a sac of loose skin that lies directly under the penis). The testicles are similar to the ovaries in women (the small sacs that hold the female egg cells). Cancer of the testicle is the most common cancer in men 15 to 35 years old. Men who have an undescended testicle (a testicle that has never moved down into the scrotum) are at higher risk of developing cancer of the testicle than other men whose testicles have moved down into the scrotum. This is true even if surgery has been done to place the testicle in the appropriate place in the scrotum.
    Stage Explanation
Stages of cancer of the testicle
Once cancer of the testicle has been found, more tests will be done to find out if the cancer has spread from the testicle to other parts of the body (staging). A doctor needs to know the stage of the disease to plan treatment. The following stages are used for cancer of the testicle:

Check for Local Channels Lance Armstrong's Tour de Force
Amazing story of America's premier bicycle racer By: John Shepler The Tour de France. In the word of competitive cycling, it is the supreme test of strength and endurance. For 22 days, 20 different stages and 2,286 miles, some of the world's most conditioned athletes compete literally head to head as they work the pedals of their racing bicycles against hills and valleys, city streets and always the onset of exhaustion. As in all sports, there sometimes arises a champion of champions. He or she is the one who is in the lead more than anyone else, the one who wins not just by a nose, but clearly out front for all to see. Lance Armstrong was not supposed to be that champion of this year's Tour de France. His doctors really expected him to be weakened and likely dead of cancer. But Lance paid no attention to that kind of thinking and now stands triumphant over both cancer and the Tour de France. Lance Armstrong's story begins in Plano, Texas. Like many athletic prodigies, his talents appeared early. He could probably have excelled in many different sports. As it was, he became a top swimmer and a triathlete during his teen age years. The U. S. Cycling Federation took notice and got him training with the Junior national Cycling Team before he even graduated from high school. Within a year or so he'd competed in the Junior world Championships in Moscow and was signed to the professional/amateur racing team sponsored by Subaru-Montgomery. He repaid their confidence by winning the U. S. Amateur Championships.

Your Source for News and Updates About Michael During His Treatment and Recovery O n September 6, 2001, Michael was diagnosed with Nonseminoma Testicular Cancer . Six short days later, after an inguinal orchiectomy , he was on the road to recovery. It certainly hasn't been easy. It seems that just when every effort and determination should be aimed at simply getting well, he has been forced to deal with all the issues related to learning about cancer and managing his treatment. These issues include learning about the different types of cancers, finding good doctors, choosing among the different treatment options, understanding and interpreting test results (sometimes better than the doctors), going to doctors' appointments, dealing with insurance companies, going on short-term disability, and thinking about and coping with the reality of infertility. Needless to say it quickly became overwhelming.
But it's not just overwhelming for Michael. Cancer also impacts the lives of a cancer patient's friends and family. In her book There's No Place Like Hope: A Guide to Beating Cancer in Mind-sized Bites, cancer survivor Vickie Girard sums up the important role friends and family play in recovery and talks about how they often feel. She writes, "You walk through the darkness with us, not because you are ill and have to, but because you choose to. We were drafted, but you enlisted. We recognize and appreciate the difference more than words can ever say. YOU are our heroes, our support, and our reasons for fighting. To love a cancer patient is, in turn, to feel sad, frightened, concerned, angry, lost, and often helpless and to do all this, for the most part silently."

Testicular cancer is a rare disease in men caused by abnormal growth of cells of the testicle. The testicles (or testes) are located inside the scrotum, the loose bag of skin that hangs below the penis. Each testicle (or testis) produces sperm.
    The male pelvis
    Cancer
The building blocks of the body are tiny cells, which normally repair and reproduce in a controlled process. With cancer, this process goes wrong and cells can divide and grow in an uncontrolled way, causing a lump on or within the part of the body affected. If this tumour contains cells that are able to invade neighbouring tissues or organs, it is known as malignant. If the tumour does not do this, it is termed benign.
    About testicular cancer
Cancer of the testicles is not a common cancer overall, and is responsible for less than one per cent of all cancer deaths. However, it is the most common cancer in men aged 20 to 34. It is important for men to be aware of the disease so that they can recognise the symptoms. If caught early, testicular cancer can usually be treated and cured.
