Achilles Tendonitis
Achilles tendonitis is one of the more common and one of the most difficult injuries to treat in athletes due to the individuals high level of activity and frequent reluctance to decrease or stop training. In addition the nature of the tendon tissue is a slow healing tissue. It is associated with pain in the back of the heel and 1" to 3" above it. The range of pain is from burning or prickly to shooting and piercing especially when running "uphill". The danger is, if left unresolved, the fibers of the tissue can become weak and rupture, accompanied by big swelling and pain. Or at the least due to minute tears in the fibers may result in painful scar tissue.
The causes of this injury can be:
1-The single biggest cause is due to over- pronation (spreading of the foot to the floor with each step). As the heel bone everts (turns outward) in pronation the fibers of the tendon are repetitively stretched beyond their range of efficient "tracking" and heat builds up (inflammation) as the fibers of the tendon rub against the fascia (Saran wrap like covering of the tendon) harder than they should. In addition the pull at the insertion can cause this overgrowth of bone commonly seen technically called a "Haglund's Deformity". 2-Improper shoe selection 3-Improper warm-up: lack of flexibility due to lack of stretching (see stretching exercises 4-Direct trauma.

Tendonitis Questions
Question: Hi. I have been experiencing constant hip pain for the last month. I am 15 years old and had been running cross-country (3.1 miles). The pain occured gradually while I was running. It has been around for about a month. I have seen an orthopedic surgeon about it and go to Physical Therapy once a week, but it is fairly persistant pain. I was diagnosed as having strained hip flexors with tendonitis. Does that sound correct? How long will it be before I can run and jump again? I would like to play basketball this winter, but right now I have a lot of pain just walking and going up steps. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Answer:

Achilles tendonitis is a condition wherein the Achilles Tendon, at or near its insertion to the posterior aspect of the calcaneus, becomes inflamed and causes pain. The Achilles Tendon is one of the longest and strongest tendons in the body. It is avascular and therefore slow to heal. The Achilles tendon is formed in the lower third of the posterior aspect of the tibia. Two muscles join to form the Achilles tendon: The Gastrocnemius, which originates on the posterior aspect of the femur, and the Soleus, which originates on the posterior aspect of the upper third of the tibia. The Achilles tendon is an anti-pronator. Achilles tendonitis is difficult to cure. an A common sports injury in runners is inflammation of the Achilles tendon, or Achilles tendonitis.

It reduces pain and swelling after oral surgery and aids in the digestion of protein rich foods. Papain, another protein dissolving enzyme like bromelain , is one of the main ingredients found in meat tenderizers. Bromelain For Tendonitis
Over the past twenty years, I have had tendonitis in various parts of my body. Participation in racquet sports, weightlifting, and other body pounding activities such as running and other aerobic activities are considered main causes. Tendonitis is inflammation of the tendon and/or the insertion point of tendon to muscle or bone caused by excessive pounding activities. The traditional medical establishment (doctors and the like) mainly suggest ibuprofen (or any other pain killer) for the pain. They also recommend staying away from the activities responsible for the problem for long periods of time. Most of us are not happy with conventional wisdom. I began taking 750 mg per day in divided doses and felt a bit of relief after a week. The 750 mg dose helped with the pain and mobility but not completely. At that point, I decided to increase the dose to 1,500 mg/day/divided doses. It worked completely. Since the discovery, I've always recommended 1,500 mg per day to others who contract the ailment. There appears to be approximately an eighty percent success rate. Factors that may account for the other twenty percent are:

How I Cured My Tendonitis (not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but it feels similar)
Starting in 1997 I started feeling pain in my wrists when I used the computer for long periods of time. Over time it happened more and more frequently so that my wrists often hurt even when I wasn't using the computer at all. Like many people with wrist pain I thought I had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. However, at one point (I think it was 1999) I went to a doctor to get a test which measured nerve damage in my wrists and it turns out there wasn't any nerve damage. That was good news because that meant that what I had was Tendonitis. Tendonitis, over a period of time, can cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (by damaging the nerves in the wrists), but at least at that point in time there wasn't any nerve damage. Even so, my wrists still hurt a lot whenever I typed. This really worried me because I'm a computer programmer, so being able to type is critical to my ability to continue to work.

Tendinitis is the inflammation of a tendon; tenosynovitis is tendinitis accompanied by an inflammation of the protective sheath around the tendon. Tendons are fibrous cords of tough tissue that connect muscles to bones. Tendon sheaths surround some tendons. Most tendinitis occurs in middle or old age, as the tendons become more susceptible to injury. However, it also occurs in younger people who exercise vigorously and in people who perform repetitive tasks. Certain tendons, especially those of the hand, are particularly susceptible to inflammation. An inflammation of the tendon that extends the thumb away from the hand is called de Quervain's disease. Inflammation can cause the tendons that close the other fingers to get caught, producing a popping feeling (trigger finger). Tendinitis above the biceps muscle in the upper arm causes pain when the elbow is bent or the forearm is rotated. The Achilles tendon in the heel and a tendon that runs over the top of the foot also commonly become inflamed.

TRANSCRIPT
Many weekend warriors know the pain of tendonitis in elbows, shoulders, feet and knees brought on by vigorous activity. Then, something as simple as this opens a new door to pain. Just ask John Cherry. John Cherry "One weekend, I became a yard warrior." Swinging a leaf blower aggravated an elbow tendon already sore from his golf swing. His doctor said it was chronic tendonitis, also known as tendonopathy. John Cherry Has tendonitis "It was really pretty severe. It would hurt to do almost anything involving the arm." Now, an increasing number of patients with tendonitis are finding relief with extracorporeal shock wave therapy. Ultrasound energy targets the affected area. Spero Karas, M.D.

What are tendon problems?
Two major problems associated with tendons include tendonitis and tenosynovitis. Tendonitis, inflammation of a tendon (the tough cords of tissue that connect muscles to bones) can affect any tendon, but is most commonly seen in the wrist and fingers. When the tendons become irritated, swelling, pain, and discomfort will occur. Tenosynovitis is the inflammation of the lining of the tendon sheaths which enclose the tendons. The tendon sheath is usually the site which becomes inflamed, but both the sheath and the tendon can become inflamed simultaneously. The cause of tenosynovitis is often unknown, but usually strain, overuse, injury, or excessive exercise may be implicated. Tendonitis may also be related to disease (i.e., diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis). Common tendon disorders include the following:
  • lateral epicondylitis (commonly known as tennis elbow) - a condition characterized by pain in the back side of the elbow and forearm, along the thumb side when the arm is alongside the body with the thumb turned away. The pain is caused by damage to the tendons that bend the wrist backward away from the palm.
