of Achilles tendonitis, why it occurs in runners, and suggestions for treatment. Achilles tendonitis. The Achilles tendon......
http://www.leigh.org/running/tendonitis.html
Achilles Tendonitis The Achilles tendon is a cord that connects the heel to the calf muscle. If either a short calf muscle or a heel that is too far away from the calf muscle pulls too much on the Achilles tendon, you'll feel a lot of pain. Dr. Weisenfeld suggests using your thumb and forefinger to pinch along the Achilles tendon, starting at the heel and working up the back of your leg to the calf. If you feel swelling and/or pain, you have Achilles Tendonitis. Runners with Achilles tendonitis need extra lift in the back of the shoe. Start with 1/4 inch heel lifts and work up to more thickness if necessary. Also, be sure your shoes are flexible at the ball of the foot. Before and after you run, do a lot of wall pushups to stretch your calves. Do knee presses and foot on chair or table to stretch your hamstrings. Do squats to stretch your Achilles tendons. When you first get Achilles tendonitis, take a few days off from running until the pain subsides. Home Injuries [Achilles Tendonitis] Bursitis Buttock Injuries Groin Pull Heel Spurs ... Short Leg

Chronic Bursitis and Tendonitis
Q:
I am hoping you can help me. After seeing many doctors, and having had back surgery to help the pain in my legs, I've been told I have chronic bursitis and tendonitis which is very painful in both my legs. Can you suggest anything I can do to relieve the pain?
A: Hip bursitis/tendonitis and low back pain that radiates down the legs is common and, unfortunately, as you discovered, surgery may not be the answer. If you are obese, weight loss will help diminish the stress to your back and legs. Exercises to strengthen your abdominal and back muscles or massage may be helpful. There is a group of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, of which ibuprofen is the classic example, that are fairly effective in relieving pain and that are not addicting. You could try Zostrix, an over-the-counter cream made from hot red peppers, that has been used for diabetics with painful legs and for arthritis. Experiment with the application of heat or ice for pain relief. Article Created: 1998-07-23

Tendonitis
Tendons attach muscles to bones. Tendonitis is an overuse injury that develops slowly in the tendons. Tiny tears occur to a tendon when it is constantly overworked. The tendon becomes irritated resulting in swelling, heat, redness, and pain. Sports that involve running and jumping can cause tendonitis in the knee, foot, or the calf. Tendonitis in the knees can also occur from biking. Swimming, swinging a golf club, or pitching a ball can cause tendonitis in the shoulder. Tendonitis may also occur from repeated motion such as typing or using a hammer. Often people try to endure the pain. They hope that it will simply go away. More serious symptoms may begin after these early symptoms are ignored. Occasional pain will change to constant aching, pain, and stiffness before, during, and after exercise. The pain gets worse and the tendon becomes tender to touch. What you can do:
  • Temporarily stop the activity that is causing the problem.

Achilles Tendonitis
A tendon is a tough cord of dense tissue that attaches muscle to bone. Tendons transfer muscle power to bones. The Achilles tendon is the large tendon connecting the heel bone to the calf muscle of the leg. Tendonitis is irritation and swelling of a tendon. Achilles tendonitis can be caused by:
  • tight calf muscles poor stretching habits running on hard surfaces and hills overuse walking on the insides of your feet or worn-out shoes
Achilles tendonitis develops slowly, and it is hard to treat. It is most common in runners. Often, athletes try to "run through" the pain. This makes the problem worse and prolongs healing. Early symptoms include swelling and redness over the tendon as well as a creaking feeling. More serious symptoms begin when you ignore the early symptoms. You will start to feel pain, aching, and stiffness before, during, and after exercise. The tendon may become tender to touch. The pain will be worse when you walk uphill or climb stairs. Follow these steps to speed healing:
  • Stop doing the activity that caused the condition. Do 20-minute ice massage sessions every 4-8 hours for 48 to 72 hours. After 72 hours begin moist heat treatments.

There have been several posts to the Ask Dr Stoll
Bulletin Board (BB) regarding Tendonitis and Bursitis.
Many of them have been archived here. The archive is roughly
chronological. I hope you find it useful.
Summary:
Tendonitis, bursitis, fibromyositis and fibromyalgia are all caused by the same mechanisms that ultimately cause arthritis. SO reviewing those archives and search parameters will get you what you need.
For bursitis, Rolfing is probably the ideal thing to do, as is tendonitis. This is because Rolfing chages the alignment of the total body. See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms.
For all of these conditions, the essential oils tend to help as well (see the homepage).

Tendonitis and the Effects on Your Routine Marc David What turns out to be a small, yet annoying pain in your joint, can quickly turn into something much more debilitating. At first, you just think it might be a pulled muscle. Maybe I did a bit too much weight? But the intermediate to advanced bodybuilder knows what muscle soreness feels like after a workout. This isn't it. But there is a potential solution.
My biceps routine, which was progressing quite nicely, turned into a non-existent routine (curling a 30lb dumbbell was impossible) after I was "officially" diagnosed with acute Tendonitis in my right arm (just below the elbow joint). The doctor said that this particular Tendonitis doesn't heal. It can get less painful but the micro tears and damage are permanent. As usual, the recommendation was to 1) quit whatever aggravates it 2) use a cream that gives some heat to the area.
Rather the follow rule #1, because if you are a hardcore bodybuilder, just quitting the exercise isn't how this injury happened in the first place. I found something that worked. I didn't want to quit doing bicep curls. Bicep curls are one of the most recommended exercises for building mass. It's a simple, basic movement that works.

http://www.studenthealth.co.uk/leaflets/AchillesTendonitis.htm
Achilles tendonitis www.Studenthealth.co.uk Mechanism of injury
Achilles tendon is particularly stressed in sport as it functions as a shock absorber and also levers the foot. Injuries usually occur after sport on hard surfaces without adequate cushioning. Too low a heel-raise may contribute to the mechanism of injury. Symptoms
Pain is experienced on or after exercise. The tendon is usually painful to touch. If neglected, the pain worsens and there is stiffness after rest. There may be swelling around the tendon. If not treated the inflammation gradually worsens and constricts the tendon movement. Treatment
Heel pad and rest is usually sufficient. Local anti-inflammatory gel or cream may be helpful (discuss suitability with the pharmacist). If there is no response to these measures physiotherapy may be required. Occasionally steroid injection into the soft tissue is necessary (performed by a specialist). Dr. Jan Austera

ACHILLES TENDONITIS PLAGUES ATHLETES AND OTHERS
A Monthly Foot Fact from Foot.com Do you sometimes experience a burning pain above the heel with every step you take? If so, you might have achilles tendonitis, a condition that plagues athletes and non-athletes alike. Achilles tendonitis is caused by inflammation and degeneration of the achilles tendon, the large tendon located in the back of the leg and inserted into the heel. This tendon can be aggravated by activities that repeatedly stress the area, such as running, jumping or other pounding sports, or can be injured by a single traumatic event. Achilles tendonitis can also be caused by not stretching regularly before exercise or wearing high heels that cause the tendon to shrink and become more vulnerable to injury. In some cases a heel bone deformity, or even prolonged periods of standing, can cause symptoms. The pain sometimes lessens during activity. According to Dr. Suzanne Belyea, D.P.M., Medical Director of Foot.com, symptoms of achilles tendonitis include a shooting or burning pain, or an extremely piercing pain. "The pain will be in the area in the back of the heel, and can also be perceived as tenderness upon rising first thing in the morning or after sitting for an extended period of time. If the condition is aggravated by a shoe rubbing against the tendon, you might see redness and feel soreness to the touch." Dr. Belyea notes that several factors can contribute to the onset of achilles tendonitis. The most common is over-pronation, or flat feet, which occurs when the arch of the foot collapses upon weight bearing, putting stress on the achilles tendon. Improper shoe selection can also lead to the condition, or aggravate it.
