Tendonitis Prevention for Programmers
Thomas Wang, August 1997 last update April 2002
The Beginning
My occupation is computer programming. The job involves significant amount of typing. About 3 years ago, I started to develop symptoms of hand tingling and numbness. These symptoms are associated with long stretchs of typing on keyboards. Gradually, these symptoms got worse, until I have to seek a doctor for treatment. The doctor said I have tendonitis. If it becomes worse, then it would develop to full carpel tunnel syndrome. My computer career would be in big trouble. What follows is a course of treatment and trouble shooting of the work environment. I am glad to say that today I am completely symptoms free. If the work environment is correctly set up, then there should be good chance to avoid the problems of tendonitis, or carpel tunnel syndrome.
Treatment
First on treatment. My treatment involves putting cold packs on my wrists. After the cold pack, Cortizone cream is ultra-sounded in the wrists area. This is received from Doctor ordered physical therapy. Physical therapy folks treat athletic injuries and work place injuries. I have heard some doctors will just issue some Advil tablets and call it a day. This by itself is ineffective except for the lightest form of tendonitis.

A chilles tendonitis, enthesis, tenosynovitis, and bursitis are all terms that can be used interchangeably for the pain associated with the posterior or the back of the heel of the human foot.
The achilles tendon is the co-joined tendon of the Gastrocnemius and the soleus muscle which form the thickened tendon at the back of the leg as it inserts into the calcaneous (heel bone). This structure becomes inflamed and damaged from a variety of mechanical forces: pronation (inward tilting of the heel) or supination (outward tilting of the heel); excessive weight; over-use, such as running or tennis or other sport activities; and sometimes metabolic problems, such as diabetes arthritis or even gout can play a major role in inflammation of the achilles tendon. However, most achilles tendon problems are mechanical in nature.

What is it
Tendonitis is the irritation of a muscle tendon, which is the rope-like muscle that attaches to the bone. Tendonitis can occur if a tendon is subject to a forceful strain or a period of small repetitive strains. Some common terms for tendonitis include: tennis elbow, trigger finger, runner's knee and jumper's knee.
Symptoms
Initially there is a dull pain when moving the ailing limb. If the action causing the tendonitis is continued the pain can become severe and limit the ability to move the limb.

Knee Tendonitis:
Your joints move by the power of your muscles. The muscles attach to your joints through tissues called tendons. The tendons transfer the force from your muscle across the joint and cause it to move. Sometimes this tendon becomes inflamed because it was injured (such as a direct blow to the thigh) or overused (such as biking up hills). When the tendon is inflamed, doctors add the ending "itis" and thus, we call this tendonitis . In some cases, the tendon actually tears in half and this is called a tendon rupture.

Rotator Cuff Problems
The rotator cuff is a group of 4 muscles that helps to lift your shoulder up over your head and also rotate it toward and away from your body. Unfortunately, it is also a group of muscles that is frequently injured by tears, tendonitis, impingement, bursitis, and strains. The major muscle that is usually involved is called the supraspinatus muscle Rotator Cuff Problems are usually broken up into the following categories - click on any of the categories to learn more about it. If you're not sure which one of these you have, start here Rotator Cuff Tendonitis . This is also known as Impingement Syndrome or Shoulder Bursitis . Usually this occurs in people 30-80 years of age, and usually the weakness in the shoulder is only mild to moderate.

What is Tendonitis?
Tendonitis is an inflammation of a tendon. A tendon is the strong, white fibrous tissues that connect muscles to bones. Tendonitis is one of the common causes of acute pain in the shoulder and can occur after an injury, or as a result of one movement repeated over and over. What causes Tendonitis? Tendonitis can be associated with a calcium deposit, which can cause inflammation. In rare cases, it may also result from a disease. The most common causes of tendonitis are: repeated use of the wrist, overuse of the tendons, poorly-fitted shoes that rub against foot tendons, bone spurs in the feet or elsewhere that irritate tendons, obesity, which puts abnormal pressure on the legs and feet. Symptoms of Tendonitis? Some of the common symptoms are: a sharp or achy pain, tenderness and swelling,
restricted movement in the area surrounding the injury, or weakness in the arm or leg due to pain. Tennis Elbow?

Achilles tendinitis is a painful and often debilitating inflammation of the Achilles tendon, also called the heel cord. This large tendon is an extension of the two calf muscles; it runs down the back of the lower leg and attaches to the heel bone (calcaneus). The Achilles tendon connects the strong leg muscles to the foot and gives us the ability to rise up on our toes, facilitating the act of walking. The Achilles tendon is vital to our ability to walk upright and Achilles tendonitis can make walking almost impossible. tendonitis interrupts many training programmes and ruins many plans for PBs. It is also the most common injury in athletes over the age of 40, and - unfortunately - it's a problem which doesn't go away very quickly: Traditional tendonitis treatment (ie, rest, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, orthotics, cortisone injections, icing, ultrasound, and conventional physical therapy) are not very successful, and about 25 per cent of athletes who suffer from chronic tendonitis problems end up undergoing surgery. How can tendonitis be prevented - or cured once it develops? Although everyone seems to agree that calf-muscle strength plays a key role in both the development and resolution of tendon difficulties (functionally strong calf muscles should ease stress on the , lowering the risk of injury or promoting healing), not a single scientific study has been published which actually links calf-strengthening with toughening of the - until now That deficiency has fortunately been corrected, thanks to some recently published research carried out at the Sports Medicine Unit of the University Hospital of Northern Sweden in Umea, Sweden. There, investigators divided 30 athletes with chronic tendonitis into two groups. One group of 15 received only traditional tendonitis treatment (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, rest, orthotics, shoe changes, cortisone injections, and physical therapy), while 15 others engaged in 'heavy-load eccentric calf-muscle training' (to be explained in a moment). All 30 subjects experienced morning stiffness in one of their tendons (athletes with problems in both tendons were excluded from the study) and suffered from pain while running

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top There are two large muscles in the calf, the gastrocnemius and soleus. These muscles generate the power for pushing off with the foot or going up on the toes. The large Achilles tendon connects these muscles to the heel. These are important muscles for walking. This tendon can become inflamed, most commonly as a result of overuse or arthritis, although inflammation can also be associated with trauma and infection. Tendinitis due to overuse is most common in younger individuals and can occur in walkers, runners, or other athletes, especially in sports like basketball that involve jumping. Jumping places a large amount of stress on the Achilles tendon.

I am a new mom and have postpartum-related de Quervain tendonitis and carpal tunnel. I wonder if any other new moms have suffered from similar injuries and if anyone has any advice on what worked for them for treatment. Elizabeth If this is related to breast-feeding and having to constantly support your baby's weight in the same position, I recommend getting a good nursing pillow. I got a "Brest friend" pillow, with a velcro waist band. This pillow supported my son without slipping out from underneath him. It helped a great deal with neck, shoulder and wrist pain. I also tried strengthening my arms and shoulders through post-partum exercise classes with weights, and this also helped. Good luck. Nancy I had this and was told it is very common. It is very unpleasant and I wished someone had warned me in advance, because it's preventable. I have suggestions, which worked for me but are exactly opposite from what my doctor/Kaiser physical therapists recommended. (The doctor snorted with laughter and told me there was nothing I could do. Not only was this most unhelpful, she turned out to be wrong.) A friend who does trigger point bodywork and is very gifted recommended the plan I followed and it made all the difference.
