Regarding the Return

of Thalidomide
Malformations Caused By Thalidomide
PHOCOMELIA is the limb malformation most commonly associated with Thalidomide. The word phocomelia is from the Greek words phoke meaning "seal" and melos meaning "limb", in which the hands and/or feet start immediately at the main joint (shoulder/hip).
Thalidomide malformations are almost all bilateral/symmetrical. That means both sides of the body are affected in the same way (both arms, both legs, all four).
Other Thalidomide malformations
When taken during pregnancy (particularly the first trimester) thalidomide causes malformations to almost any part of the body that is developing at the time the drug is taken. These are just some resulting malformations:
  • Missing or malformed limbs (bilateral) No ears or deafness Missing or extra fingers or toes Partial or total loss of sight Improper formation of the heart, kidney and other internal organs

Evangeline an infinitely precious person
Evangeline Edwards (pictured with her sister and brothers) was born with a very rare condition called Thrombocytopenia Absent Radius (TAR) syndrome in December 1994. People with TAR syndrome have a blood clotting deficiency, shortened arms and bowed legs. Evangeline’s parents found out that she had a disability during a routine scan half way through the pregnancy. They were strongly encouraged to consider abortion, which they refused. Evangeline is now doing very well in a mainstream school. She walks short distances with callipers, and also uses a wheelchair. Life is not always easy for her but she has a lot of friends and enjoys many activities. She is a very bright child, who has always had an inquisitive and determined nature. Sue, her mother, says, “Words will never describe how much we love her.” Membership form

ABSTRACT
Commercially available tricycles for individuals with disabilities are relatively uncommon. Those tricycles that do exist cater toward a broader range of people and therefore do not address the specific needs of an individual. Such vehicles can also become very costly. The aim of this project is to modify an existing tricycle to allow a child with Thrombocytopenia-Absent Radii (TAR) syndrome to independently maneuver the vehicle. Designs for three major systemssteering, mounting/dismounting, and pedalingwere developed and implemented. A final evaluation was performed to assess the credibility of the project.

General Discussion
Thrombocytopenia-absent radius (TAR) syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that is apparent at birth (congenital). The disorder is characterized by low levels of platelets in the blood (thrombocytopenia), resulting in potentially severe bleeding episodes (hemorrhaging) primarily during infancy. Other characteristic findings include absence (aplasia) of the bone on the thumb side of the forearms (radii) and underdevelopment (hypoplasia) or absence of the bone on the "pinky" side of the forearms (ulnae). Other abnormalities may also be present, such as structural malformations of the heart (congenital heart defects), kidney (renal) defects, and/or mental retardation that may be secondary to bleeding episodes in the skull (intracranial hemorrhages) during infancy. TAR syndrome is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait.
