What is sunburn?
Sunburn is an inflammation of the skin that is caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. A similar burn can follow overexposure to a "sun" (tanning) lamp. UV radiation can also damage the eyes, although no surface burn is apparent. Can sunburn cause permanent damage?
Yes. Sunburn early in life increases the risk of developing skin cancer later on. Repeated overexposure to ultraviolet rays can also scar, freckle, dry out, and wrinkle the skin prematurely. In addition, frequent overexposure to ultraviolet rays can increase the risk of developing eye cataracts and macular degeneration , a leading cause of blindness. What is UV light?

Prevention
Prevention is the best remedy here, if you can. Long-term results from excessive exposure to the sun, such as skin cancer and wrinkled skin, can be avoided with proper precautions. One of the best preventatives is to use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 that offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays. You can get as much sun sightseeing as baking at the beach, so use sunscreen whenever you are outdoors. Use an aloe vera lotion containing a sunblock. This will cut out 90% of the burning rays and allow 75% of the tanning rays to reach the skin. To speed healing take the following supplements for a few days after getting burned: 1,000 mg of vitamin C, 400 I.U. of vitamin E, 15 mg of beta carotene, and 1-2 tablespoons (or about 3 capsules per teaspoon) of flaxseed oil, an essential fatty acid. Caution: don't ever cover a sunburn that is blistered or open with an ointment, oil, salve or butter, for it will make the area susceptible to infection.
Remedies
Folk
Aloe Take as many leaves as necessary from an aloe plant; refrigerate; peel off top layer of leaves; apply the side of the leaf with flesh exposed directly to the sunburn. Other remedies use aloe vera juice: for mild to medium sunburn, keep the affected area moist with aloe vera juice. Repeat frequently. This will reduce the pain and the amount of peeling. Aloe vera ointment works well, too, as it contains oil and will not evaporate. For a severe sunburn, keep the area moist at all times with aloe vera juice. Since aloe vera is an astringent, you may want to use aloe vera ointment or some sort of oil, such as olive or baby.

HERE COMES THE SUN sunburn PREVENTION. Severe sunburn with blistering should be brought to the attention of a physician. sunburned skin will often be painful.
http://www.lanakids.com/sun.html
So Don't Burn... While you may think it is impossible, avoiding the sun's damaging rays is easier than ever, especially with a little preparation. Here are some ways to do so: Avoid getting sunburn on sensitive areas - lips, scalp, face and neck - by wearing protective lip balm, sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat. Even your eyes can be damaged by the sun. Kids can wear sunglasses, too! Look for shatter-resistant lenses that block UVA and UVB rays. Stay and play in the shade whenever possible. Don't rely on a T-shirt to keep the sun off your skin. A dry T-shirt alone only provides protection equal to a sunscreen with an SPF of 8. If kids swim with the T-shirt on, the wet shirt drops down to a protection level of SPF 4. (The shirts woven fibers allow sunlight to pass through it.) Therefore, put sunscreen all over your body, even if wearing a T-shirt. Avoid the sun between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., when its rays are strongest. Put sunscreen on, even when it is cloudy out, since the sun's rays can pierce through the clouds unknowingly, causing a sunburn even when you think you won't get one. HERE COMES THE SUN: SUNBURN PREVENTION Being outside in the hot, sunny weather is fun - who doesn't love summer vacation! But, when you're outdoors, even for short periods of time, the sun can be very damaging to your skin. This is especially true during the

Definition: Skin burned by exposure to the sun or other ultraviolet light. See also sunburn first aid
Alternative Names: Burn from the sun
Common Causes: Sunburn results when the amount of exposure to the sun or other ultraviolet light source exceeds the ability of the body's protective pigment, melanin , to protect the skin. Sunburn in a very light-skinned person may occur in less than 15 minutes of midday sun exposure, while a dark-skinned person may tolerate the same exposure for hours. It is now recognized that sunburn and sun exposure should not be taken as something insignificant. Deaths have resulted from acute sun exposure and significant temporary disability is experienced by millions of sunburned people each year. Unlike a thermal burn , sunburn is not immediately apparent. By the time the skin starts to become painful and red, the damage has been done. The pain is worst between 6 and 48 hours after sun exposure. In severe sunburns

T his book is the third in Shames' excellent Florida series, and it succeeds even more thoroughly than the first. Equally entertaining, it cuts a little deeper without losing any of the charm of its predecessors. All of these books center on the disorientation of New York mafiosi who find themselves transplanted to the very alien soil of Key West. In this entry, the mob boss Vincente Delgatto finds himself a widower, semi-retired, and staying with his nearly middle-class illegitimate son Joey Goldman. Moody and pensive, Delgatto finds himself wanting to explain his life to both his sons and the world. So, with Joey's help, Delgatto joins forces with a local reporter to have his reminiscences ghostwritten into a real book. Despite all efforts to contain it, news of this project filters out to the New York families, and the distinction between "memoirs" and "ratting out your friends" turns out to be way too subtle for them. Soon the only question left is whether it makes more sense to kill the ghostwriter or Delgatto.

For starters, make sure your baby drinks plenty of fluids (breast milk or formula is best if she's under six months old); she's probably dehydrated from being out in the sun. To soothe the sunburned area, soak a cloth nappy, flannel or muslin square in cool water, wring it out, and gently place it on the sunburned area for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day (just make sure your baby doesn't get chilly). Or let your baby soak in a tepid bath (adding a teaspoon of baking soda to the water can make it more soothing.) Infant paracetamol can also help to ease the pain. Peeling usually begins three to 10 days after the sunburn. Don't be alarmed when it happens; peeling is a natural part of the healing process. Just make sure your baby stays in the shade until her skin has healed and dress her in loose cotton clothing that won't irritate her sensitive skin.

11.02 Sunburn
Presentaion: Patients generally seek help only if their sunburn is severe. There will be a history of extended exposure to sunlight or to an artificial source of ultraviolet radiation, such as a sunlamp. The burns will be accompanied by intense pain and the patient will not be able to tolerate anything touching the skin. There may be systemic complaints that include nausea, chills, and fever. The affected areas are erythematous and are accompanied by mild edema. The more severe the burn, the earlier it will appear and the more likely it will progress to edema and blistering.
What to do:
  • Inquire as to whether or not the patient is using a photosensitizing drug (e.g., tetracyclines, thiazides, sulfonamides, phenothiazines) and have the patient discontinue its use.
  • Have the patient apply cool compresses of water or Burow's solution (Domeboro Powder Packets-1 pkt in 1 pint of water) as often as desired to relieve pain. This is the most comforting therapy.
  • The patient may be helped by applying a topical steroid spray such as dexamethasone (Decaspray) and using an emollient such as Lubriderm.

DNA repair could reduce sunburn
An immune system chemical may undo skin damage by sunlight.
26 November 2001 ERICA KLARREICH Protein could repair havoc wrought by sun. A chemical involved in immune-system signalling may be able to reverse some types of skin damage caused by sunlight. It could reduce sunburn by activating DNA-repair mechanisms, a new study suggests, raising the possibility that the chemical might be used to prevent or treat skin cancer High-energy ultraviolet light is thought to promote skin cancer by damaging the DNA within cells. Skin cancer, the most common malignancy among people of Western European descent, strikes over one million people each year in the United States alone. But when cultured human skin cells were treated with the protein interleukin-12 (IL-12), they were less likely to incur permanent DNA damage or die after being exposed to ultraviolet light, the researchers found. The cells showed as much damage as control cells immediately after exposure, but had significantly less damage several hours later. The same effect was found in the skin of mice treated with IL-12 before being exposed to ultraviolet. This suggests that IL-12 promotes repair rather than blocking ultraviolet rays, as most sunscreens do. IL-12 could be a "very attractive" treatment for sun damage, says Schwarz, but it will never take the place of sunscreens, he cautions.

Inflammation of the skin caused by overexposure to the sun.
Description
Sunburn is caused by exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. There are two types of ultraviolet rays, UVA and UVB. UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply and can cause melanoma in susceptible people. UVB rays, which don't penetrate as deeply, cause sunburn and wrinkling. Most UVB rays are absorbed by sunscreens , but only about half the UVA rays are absorbed. Skin cancer from sun overexposure is a serious health problem in the United States, affecting almost a million Americans each year. One out of 87 will develop malignant melanoma , the most serious type of skin cancer, and 7,300 of them will die each year. Fair-skinned people are most susceptible to sunburn, because their skin produces only small amounts of the protective pigment called melanin. People trying to get a tan too quickly in strong sunlight are also more vulnerable to sunburn. While they have a lower risk, even the darkest-skinned people can get skin cancer. Repeated sun overexposure and burning can prematurely age the skin, causing yellowish, wrinkled skin. Overexposure can increase the risk of skin cancer, especially a serious burn in childhood.

It's hot outside, everybody's jumping around in their seats, and the bell rings . . . finally you can play outside!
There are tons of fun things to do outdoors. But while you're out there having a great time, you also need to be safe. Sunny weather comes with some things that can make you feel cruddy if you're not careful. But luckily it's easy to learn how to have fun in the sun and be safe at the same time! Don't Feel the Burn
Even though the sun is hot, it does cool things: it keeps us warm, it makes flowers and plants grow, it even gives us vitamin D so we can better absorb calcium into our bodies for strong bones . It does all these things by sending down light, which includes invisible rays called ultraviolet rays (say: uhl -trah- vie -oh-let) (these are also sometimes called UV rays ). Some ultraviolet rays pass through air and clouds and penetrate the skin. When your skin's been exposed to too many of these rays, you get what's known as a sunburn. Ouch! Some people get a sunburn faster than others because of their coloring. If you have blond or red hair, light-colored skin, and light-colored eyes, you'll tend to get a sunburn quicker.
