23. Suicide Is Painless
Celebrates the rights of life and death. Poetry and personal stories.
http://www.geocities.com/whatyouown13/
SUICIDE IS PAINLESS Some say that suicide is the ultimate in selfishness, and I agree. The pain and anguish it causes in the loved ones who remain is so great. Suicide is the embodiement of selfishness, but is the right of the individual. Just as we all have the right to life, so do we have the right to death.
We all have been through wars. Internal, External it matters not. We have the scars - physical and emotional. We won. Whether individually we chose to live or die, that fact that we acknowledge that it is Our choice. We can chose, and we do chose. I do not say chose life. I do not say chose death. I say Chose. Welcome to the meaning.
A Site Dedicated to preserving the Web Sites of the deceased.
Why the title "Suicide is Painless"?
The title of this site is the name of the theme song from MASH, the television series based on a med unit in the Korean war. The lyrics are not used in the series however. It shocked me when I learned that that was the title of that song. It seemed a inappropriate theme song for a show about saving lives. But it is. The more I thought about it, however, the less inappropriate it sounded. The song talks about choosing death, but those in wars do not choose to die. Especially those who never wanted to be involved in the first place. The doctors of MASH tried to fufill their patients rights to live, but with the right to live comes the right to die. Perhaps it is a fitting counterpoint that the unsung lyrics to the MASH theme song honor that right.

25. AJCongress On Muslim Decree Allowing For Women Suicide Bombers
Statement by American Jewish Congress Executive Director Phil Baum calling on Muslim and nonMuslim religious leaders to condemn the decree of the Saudi Arabia High Islamic Council that women can serve as suicide bombers.

Women May Not Drive a Car, but Can Blow Themselves Up:
AJCONGRESS CONDEMNS SAUDI RELIGIOUS DECREE
THAT WOMEN CAN SERVE AS SUICIDE BOMBERS;
CALLS ON RELIGIOUS LEADERS TO SPEAK OUT IN OPPOSITION
(August 7, 2001) American Jewish Congress Executive Director Phil Baum today called on Muslim and non-Muslim religious leaders to condemn the decree of the Saudi Arabia High Islamic Council that women can serve as suicide bombers. The full text of his statement is as follows: Saudi Arabia is so protective of its women that it requires them to be garbed from head to toe and severely restricts the kind of education they can receive and the work they can do. Women are not permitted to drive a car, but the Saudis now have declared that it is perfectly acceptable for women to blow themselves up as suicide bombers. The Saudi High Islamic Council gave its approval last week for women to become agents of death; already, a 23-year-old Palestinian mother of two was seized by Israeli security last week as she brought explosives to Tel Aviv's central bus station. Apparently, when it comes to killing Jews, nothing is off limits to segments of the Muslim world. With this edict, it is not enough for Muslim mothers to encourage their children to be suicide bombers and upon their death to praise them for their heroic and noble action; now, in addition, they are called upon themselves to set an example for their children.

A Typical Example of Death of Choice, and Confusion of the Laws Concerning This
Velma Howard, aged 76, knew her life was coming to an end. Lou Gehrig's Disease was taking away the use of her limbs one by one. Eventually it would affect her throat and she would be in danger of choking on her own saliva. This elderly, respectable, Middle American decided on rational suicide. The consequences of her decision resulted in an emotional ordeal for her family and a legal muddle typical of the mess in which America's laws on assisted death currently are. Read more ...
Assisted Suicide Laws Around the World
Assisted suicide laws around the world are clear in some nations but unclear – if they exist at all – in others. Just because a country has not defined its criminal code on this specific action does not mean all assisters will go free. It is a complicated state of affairs. A great many people instinctively feel that suicide and assisted suicide are such individual acts of freedom and free will that they assume there are no legal prohibitions. This fallacy has brought many people into trouble with the law. Read more ...

28. Teen Suicide - AACAP Facts For Families # 10
Describes risk factors, symptoms and warning signs of suicide in adolescents/teens. TEEN suicide. Each year in the US, thousands of teenagers commit suicide.
http://www.aacap.org/publications/factsfam/suicide.htm
T EEN S UICIDE No. 10 (Updated 11/98) S uicides among young people nationwide have increased dramatically in recent years. Each year in the U.S., thousands of teenagers commit suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-to-24-year-olds, and the sixth leading cause of death for 5-to-14-year-olds. Teenagers experience strong feelings of stress, confusion, self-doubt, pressure to succeed, financial uncertainty, and other fears while growing up. For some teenagers, divorce, the formation of a new family with step-parents and step-siblings, or moving to a new community can be very unsettling and can intensify self-doubts. In some cases, suicide appears to be a "solution." Depression and suicidal feelings are treatable mental disorders. The child or adolescent needs to have his or her illness recognized and diagnosed, and appropriate treatment plans developed. When parents are in doubt whether their child has a serious problem, a psychiatric examination can be very helpful. Many of the symptoms of suicidal feelings are similar to those of depression. Parents should be aware of the following signs of adolescents who may try to kill themselves:
  • change in eating and sleeping habits
  • withdrawal from friends, family, and regular activities

features Alan Vega, Multimedia Artist Suicide Watch by Simon Reynolds January 30 - February 5, 2002 Switched on: Vega lights up Deitch projects. (photo: Robin Holland) lan Suicide leans over and tweaks a detail in one of his light sculptures, almost imperceptibly shifting the jut of a plastic dinosaur. Strewn across the floor or dangling from the ceiling as often as they're hung on the walls, the glowing sculptures suggest ready-made shrines from some J.G. Ballard post-cataclysmic city of the near future—cargo cult-like accretions of 20th-century glitz and grunge. Densely tangled garlands of lightbulbs in all different colors and shapes, the pieces are festooned with pop jetsam: toy guns and monsters, porno cards, kitschy religious trinkets, and photos of movie stars snipped from glossy mags. Making a living has been a constant issue for Vega. "People always give advice to someone who talks about wanting to be an artist, they say, 'Go to college, get a real job, then you can support your art.' That's what I did—I got into music to support my art. Suicide is my regular job!" For most of the '70s, though, both careers were equally unprofitable. "We had no money, me and Marty [Rev, Suicide's synth player]. I used to eat one Blimpie tuna sandwich a day. People always complain about limitations, but that's bullshit—you can do anything you want, if you really want to. Suicide started out with, like, 10 bucks."

Dark comedies are among the most overused genres in Hollywood. Many directors think that all they need to do is to turn down the lights, get a bunch of angst-filled actors, find an outlandish script and, voila, they've got a film noir a la Quentin Tarantino and a recipe for instant riches. Although many have failed, director Peter O'Fallon manages to make an intelligent and funny picture out of well-worn materials. SUICIDE KINGS, which has nothing whatsoever to do with suicide, delights sheerly through the strength of its execution rather than the freshness of its plot.

Quote of the Moment... Failure is an option, failure is also a possibility, but failure should never be by choice. ~Chuck Norlin ~
T ime heals all wounds is not necessarily true for survivors of suicide. Time is necessary for healing, but time is not enough. Shared feelings enrich and lead to growth and healing.
the Circle F rom within the circle, we talk about the past, I hear cries for fathers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters and friendships we thought would last. And we ache for the arms of a loved one of a time too short lived and of questions left more piercing than a knife. Oh, the questions come hauntingly, pressing your mind, when a loved one takes their own life. In the Circle I dare reach out my hand.
In the Circle help me see there's a plan for me. And my story becomes yours as we struggle through the pain.
In the Circle, we remember their names. We have daydreams of the future about how we thought it might be, with regrets of conversations that might have been the key. We are angry and confused as we struggle for our breath. Our hearts cry out in anger in what has been labeled a senseless death.

Ethical Issues in Terminal Health Care
This series of articles originally appeared in The Senior Reporter in the spring and summer of 1992. I want to especially thank Larry Fortner, former editor of the Duluth News-Tribune and editor/publisher of The Senior Reporter, for having given me the opportunity to research first-hand and in depth this sensitive and critical issue. With his guidance and suggested contacts, I was able to gain a far deeper understanding of these important issues and their complexity.
I want also to thank all of the local doctors, nurses and professionals here in the Northland who allowed me to probe their souls for this series. It was an immensely rewarding experience.
I was asked to explore the subject matter utilizing an unbiased, journalistic approach for the first four articles. This approach greatly aided my understanding as I could "hear the heart" in a way one does not through mere reading. In the fifth, I was permitted to express my personal views... after coming to an understanding of what I was addressing.
While working on the series I discovered the power of the wired, online world and initiated several discussion threads on AOL to uncover new angles and anecdotes for my writing. This resulted in my being invited to submit to Truth Seeker magazine an article which distilled the essence of nearly two years of thinking on the matter of physician assisted suicide.

    Suicide in Youth
Carol Watkins, MD According to the Surgeon General, a youth commits suicide every two hours in our country. In 1997, more adolescents died from suicide than AIDS, cancer, heart disease, birth defects and lung disease. Suicide claims more adolescents than any disease or natural cause. Adolescents now commit suicide at a higher rate than the national average of all ages. The rate of adolescent suicide in adolescent males has tripled between 1960 and 1980. Suicide rates for adolescent females have increased between two to three fold. There have been striking increases in suicidal behaviors among African American males, Native American males and children under 14. Much of the increase can be accounted for by deaths due to guns.
