Browse all health information In Harms Way: Suicide in America Suicide is a tragic and potentially preventable public health problem. In 2000, suicide was the 11th leading cause of death in the U.S. Specifically, 10.6 out of every 100,000 persons died by suicide. The total number of suicides was 29,350, or 1.2 percent of all deaths. Suicide deaths outnumber homicide deaths by five to three. It has been estimated that there may be from 8 to 25 attempted suicides per every suicide death. The alarming numbers of suicide deaths and attempts emphasize the need for carefully designed prevention efforts. Suicidal behavior is complex. Some risk factors vary with age, gender, and ethnic group and may even change over time. The risk factors for suicide frequently occur in combination. Research has shown that more than 90 percent of people who kill themselves have depression or another diagnosable mental or substance abuse disorder, often in combination with other mental disorders.

Portrait of a Son's Suicide
Bill's Story
by Gabi Clayton (Bill's mother)
With editorial assistance and inspiration from my friend, Steve Schalchlin
Coming Out
Bill came out to us as bisexual when he was 14. He was afraid to tell us, because he knew that other kids had told their parents and that their parents had disowned them or reacted in other ways that were frightening. He had read the book I had loaned him "Changing Bodies, Changing Lives," and there were coming out stories in the book. Finally he worked up the courage to tell us and we assured him that we loved him and accepted him. He was so happy that he wanted to tell the whole world. We recommended a support group out at the college which I had just graduated from. Bill went to that group three times and stopped - he said he really liked it but that he was fine and didn't need to go any more.
The Kid I Knew and Loved
Bill was the child who came home from school the first week in first grade SO excited because his teacher had let him go to a special room! Turns out he finished a project early and decided to make animal noises to entertain the other children. As discipline he was sent to the coat room off the classroom. He enjoyed swinging on the closet bar so much that he wondered if the teacher would let him do it again the next day. He was a gifted student who didn't always get the best of grades because he was always doing twenty things at the same time - and homework wasn't always on the top of the list.

Comments by a teenager I was extremely astonished at a number of things when I read this newspaper article. We used to hear of suicides on the news, but now they're so common they aren't reported. I think a lot more attention must be focused on this issue, with the percentages of teenage suicides increasing dramatically. Often when something has gone wrong I say to myself 'I am going to kill myself', but I never do. It may be because I am scared, afraid or just said I was going to kill myself without really taking note of what I'd said. For some people this saying is becoming far too close to reality. Life is getting tougher and tougher everyday and it's harder than ever to be employed. This means people have to study and get good marks to have any hope of achieving a supporting occupation. This then leads to stress, tension and depression. Some people just can't handle it. There are usually other factors involved too, including drugs, peer pressure and sexual abuse. Surely it's more important to live than to worry about getting a job.

New York's finest signalled the start of trading
New York's stock exchanges have closed on the first day of trading since last Tuesday's attacks on the World Trade Center, with sharp falls tempered by cuts in interest rates. The benchmark Dow Jones stock index lost 7% of its value - the largest one-day fall in its history - and the hi-tech Nasdaq fell 6.8%. But support from central banks around the world helped to stave off the gloomiest predictions, with the United States, Europe, Switzerland, Canada and Sweden cutting interest rates by 0.5%. The return to business at the world's largest stock exchange had been eagerly awaited, after its longest shutdown since the depression of the 1930s.
Traders held a two-minute silence
There has been widespread anxiety about the possible impact on the sluggish US economy of last Tuesday's attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. In other developments:
  • The Taleban authorities in Afghanistan say they will decide on the fate of Osama Bin Laden - the man named by the United States as the prime suspect in the attacks - at a meeting of the country's Islamic leaders on Tuesday
  • The UN refugee agency is sending emergency staff to Pakistan and Iran in advance of what it says could become a major Afghan refugee crisis.
