Substance-Related Disorders The term Substance-Related Disorders refers to disorders caused by the ingestion of any drug which can be abused, including prescribed medications and alcohol as well as illicit substances. Generally, a substance-related disorder includes the purposeful ingestion of a substance with the goal of altering one's internal state. At lower levels of ingestion this pattern is considered to be abuse and as the pattern progresses, with increasing tolerance, dependency on the substance is deemed to have developed. Substance related disorders are characterized by repeated use or abuse of substances that results in a pattern of behavioral, physiological and cognitive symptoms that have negative, often devastating effects on the persons ability to function in everyday life and on interpersonal relationships. The disorders progress from substance use to abuse and finally dependence. In the latter stage the person often becomes so consumed by the need for the substance that its pursuit is the number priority. Loss of job, financial strain and sometimes the engagement in criminal activity are the results. For more information on Substance-Related-Disorders go to: www.health.org
