Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Awards CESAR Grant
CESAR has been awarded a one-year grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to study DWI offender treatment and its effect on DWI recidivism. DWI results in more than 17,000 U.S. deaths annually, yet few systematic studies of treatment practices exist. CESAR will use unique data linkage strategies to analyze administrative records of a six-year period. The study will have important implications regarding treatment assignment policies and aid in designing more targeted and effective treatment strategies to reduce recidivism. CESAR will collaborate with the Maryland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration.

MAKING WAVES FOR CHANGE
SALIS convened its 26th Annual Conference in Berkeley, California, on April 20 - 24, 2004. With the theme Making Waves for Change , nearly fifty attendees participated in a lively three-and-a-half days of networking, education, and productive committee work. Especially gratifying was the involvement of SALIS and ELISAD members from four European countries, Israel, as well as several from Canada. Host (and SALIS Executive Director) Andrea Mitchell of the Alcohol Research Group did a wonderful job in creating another successful annual meeting. Thanks so much to all the speakers, to Andrea, and her conference associates for all their work!
