Web of Addictions
Welcome to the Web of Addictions The Web of Addictions is dedicated to providing accurate information about alcohol and other drug addictions. The Web of Addictions was developed for several reasons. We are concerned about the pro drug use messages in some Web sites and in some use groups. We are concerned about the appalling extent of misinformation about abused drugs on the internet, particularly on some usenet newsgroups. Finally, we wanted to provide a resource for teachers, students and others who needed factual information about abused drugs. We have received several awards. We are proud of the recognition we have received because it enhances the credibility of the information presented in these pages. You can review our awards. We take addictions seriously. You won't find glib, hip treatment of this very serious topic here. New , What's new on the Web of Addictions

More Health Insurance Plans Address Gaps in Minority Health Care
In a new study released by America's Health Insurance Plans and RWJF, half of the health insurance plans surveyed report they now collect data on the race and ethnicity of their members. This information is essential to address gaps in care often experienced by minorities. Disparities at the End of Life An RWJF panel discussion and webcast offer insights into African-American use of hospice and palliative-care services, and awareness of living wills and advance directives. May is Mental Health Awareness Month To take advantage of an entire month dedicated to the people we (OMHSAS) serve, NAMI National is sponsoring a nationwide fundraising and mental health awareness program called NAMI WALKS. Harrisburg, Pennsylvania has been chosen as one of 40 locations across the country where this year's walk will be held. To show our support of this powerful initiative, OMHSAS is encouraging our staff to participate in this event. The Walk will be held on May 22, 2004. This is a rain or shine event. If you would like to learn more about the walk, click here. http://namipa.nami.org All the proceeds from the Walk will be used to fund NAMI's programs. These programs include support, education, research, and advocacy involving schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (manic depression), major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and severe anxiety disorders. To rally support, OMHSAS sponsored a t-shirt contest at our state mental hospitals. Consumers at each of our state mental hospitals were encouraged to create a t-shirt design with a mental health awareness focus. The designs were submitted to OMHSAS and then disseminated to a panel of consumer judges from Harrisburg State Hospital to choose the winning design. Over 120 designs were submitted. The winning design was submitted from Danville State Hospital. The winning design is displayed at the left, which will be reproduced as the OMHSAS team t-shirt for NAMI WALKS. Each contestant in the t-shirt design contest will receive a free t-shirt with the winning design on it. If anyone would like to purchase a t-shirt, please contact Celene Funk at
