http://home.ica.net/~fred/anch10-3.htm
STUTTERING Fluent speech is smooth, forward-moving, unhesitant and effortless speech. A "dysfluency" is any break in fluent speech. Everyone has dysfluencies from time to time. "Stuttering" is speech that has more dysfluencies than is considered average. Everyone has dysfluencies in their speech. The average person will have between 7-10% of their speech dysfluent. These dysfluencies are usually word or phrase repetitions, fillers (um, ah) or interjections. When a speaker experiences dysfluencies at a rate greater than 10% they may be stuttering. Stuttering is often accompanied by tension and anxiety. The types of dysfluencies in stuttering may also be different. Sound or syllable repetitions, silent "blocks", and prolongations (unnatural stretching out of a sound) and facial grimaces or tics can be present. There are many different kinds of dysfluencies. Dysfluencies heard in the speech of normal speakers include fillers (um, ah), hesitations, whole word and phrase repetitions, and revisions. Dysfluencies that are more characteristic of stuttering include sound or syllable repetition, prolongations (unnatural stretching out of sounds),and blocks (sound gets stuck and can't come out). Stuttering can be differentiated from normal dysfluencies by the type, frequency and duration of dysfluency. A percentage of dysfluency can be determined by counting the number of dysfluencies in a 100 words. The average speaker has upto 7% dysfluencies of the types described above. They are usually rapid and don't slow speech down. Stuttering occurs at frequencies of 10% and up and can last from a half second up to 30 seconds, and is accompanied by tension.

Introduction
Since its inception in the early 1990's, the Web has become a widely accepted medium for archiving, disseminating and communicating information. In the last few years, the Web technology is moving into the arena where it can be directly useful as a tool for educational, research and commercial purposes. The development of the MathML is a major step in the direction of providing a means of [re]presenting mathematical notation on the Web. This work examines the state of MathML, particularly the issues regarding its deployment, in the light of other technologies. The purpose of this exercise is to objectively assess the current situation with the goal to increase public awareness, rather than a marketing-oriented critique. We assume the reader has basic background in XML syntax and MathML. An elementary knowledge of some other XML vocabularies will also be useful, but is not required. For a tutorial introduction to MathML, see

the National Stuttering Association! Who We Are Activities Meetings Outreach ... FAQs "There is nothing of which we are more ashamed than of not being ourselves,
and there is nothing which brings us greater joy and happiness than
to think, to feel or to say what is ours" - Erich Fromm

"If you stutter, you're not alone" Note: the National Stuttering Association (NSA) was formerly known as the National Stuttering Project (NSP). These are the same organization and the terms are used interchangably. Please bear with us as we learn to use our new name! Who We Are . . .
T he National Stuttering Association is a non-profit organization formed in 1977 that is dedicated to bringing hope, dignity, support, education, and empowerment to children and adults who stutter. The NSA has over 3000 members nationwide and operates a volunteer network of over 100 local support groups. The Dallas Chapter is one of these groups. The Dallas Chapter was organized in 1981. We are the largest NSA chapter in the country, having over 70 active members in the fall of 1998. Our main monthly meetings are attended by anywhere from 15 to 40 people. We are a support group geared toward supporting our members in all aspects of life, especially those areas affected by stuttering. We welcome visitors, students, speech professionals, and especially new members at any of our meetings.

At SpeechEasy, we are committed to helping people who stutter speak more fluently and with less effort. We are proud to say that through our fluency devices, we are making solid strides towards this goal. Our progress is also reflected in our customer satisfaction surveys. Approximately 80 percent of our customers say they are satisfied with their device and nearly 90 percent would recommend that those who stutter consider SpeechEasy devices as a viable treatment option. In addition, most report a heightened sense of confidence, freedom and self-reliance, as well as an improvement in social and professional relationships. WELCOME TO MIRIAM MONDLIN'S WEBSITE
Aesthetic Realism Consultant
This website is a work in progress. The very first thing I want to write about is a matter that concerns many people in America and has caused a great deal of pain: stuttering. I know that the philosophy of Aesthetic Realism , founded by Eli Siegel , understands stuttering and can end it for I learned the scientific cause of stuttering and my stuttering ended! As I say in my article, reprinted here:
There is much written on this subject but the definitive explanation of its cause is in "An Approach to a Philosophy of Self and Disease," chapter 11 of Self and World: An Explanation of Aesthetic Realism , by Eli Siegel [Definition Press, 1981]. "Stuttering," Mr. Siegel writes, "is one of the most conspicuous manifestations of the antagonistic impact of a desire to express, with a desire to withhold." And as he continues, he literally is describing technically what happens when one stutters:
It is the embodiment of inhibition and forwardness; it is the explosive, excessively energetic, excessively repetitious, and excessively denying, bodily symbol of the sudden battle between the centrifugal and centripetal selves. One self wishes to be other, to be related; and one wishes to be a snug, perfect point, capable of dismissing anything and everything.

110. A Quick Definition Of Stuttering
What is stuttering? stuttering is a disorder of fluency characterized byvarious behaviors that interfere with the forward flow of speech.
http://www.wiu.edu/users/mfrwq/whatisstut.html
What is stuttering?
(These are just a few basic ideas that drive my thinking about stuttering. Certainly, there is a lot more to stuttering than what is presented here.)
  • primarily characterized by repetitions (sounds, syllables, part-words, whole words, phrases), pauses, and prolongations that differ in number and severity from those of normally fluent individuals.
    • other disorders are characterized by disfluent speech, but the patterns of disfluency in these other disorders differ from that seen in developmental stuttering.
onset usually occurs around the time that language skills are developing, and onset is generally gradual in nature. Late-onset developmental stuttering is rare.
  • secondary characteristics are frequently evident, and these vary in type and severity from stutterer to stutterer.
  • the disorder is variable the stutterer will be more fluent in some situations than others, more fluent at some times than others, etc.
    • sometimes, all the time?
    • we have to be cautious not to read too much into fluency established in the clinical setting.
  • most stutterers can be highly fluent under certain conditions (e.g., choral reading, white noise masking).

by Jenna Hollenstein, MS, RD Definition Causes Risk Factors ... Organizations
Definition
Stuttering is a speech disorder in which the flow of speech is interrupted by:
  • Repetition or prolongation of sounds, words, or syllables An inability to begin a word
The person who is stuttering may frequently blink the eyes and/or have abnormal facial or upper body movements in an attempt to speak.
Causes
The cause of stuttering is still incompletely understood. Some experts have suggested that stuttering may occur when:
  • A child's ability to speak does not match his or her verbal demands There are psychological factors in a child’s life, such as mental illness or extreme stress Problems occur in the connections between muscles, nerves, and areas of the brain that control speech
Considerable current evidence suggests that stuttering is caused by problems in the part of the brain which controls the timing of speech muscle activation. The reasons for such problems of speech timing remain unclear.
Risk Factors
A risk factor is something that increases your chance of getting a disease or condition.
