HOMEPAGE EMAIL NEWSLETTER EPILEPSY INFORMATION MEMBERSHIP AND SERVICES ... APPLE UK STORE Epilepsy Action is the working name of British Epilepsy Association and is a Registered Charity (Registered in England No. 234343) Sturge-Weber Syndrome The Sturge-Weber Syndrome (SWS) is a rare disease in which the presence of a birth mark (port wine stain), usually on one side of the face, is associated with an abnormality of the brain caused by abnormal blood vessels on the surface of the brain. This abnormality usually results in seizures or other problems. Sturge-Weber Syndrome is usually a spasmodic occurrence - in other words it does not run in families. Very rarely one or more family members may be affected. Symptoms The first abnormality noted in Sturge-Weber Syndrome is the birth mark which is present at birth. This is flat and deep red. It is due to abnormalities of the very small blood vessels in the skin. The most common site for the birth mark is the forehead on one side of the face, often coming down on to the cheek, nose or upper lip. Sometimes both sides of the face are involved and on occasions similar birth marks are present on other parts of the body. Seizures develop in nearly all patients with Sturge-Weber Syndrome. They may start at birth or later in the first year of life. They are usually partial motor seizures involving jerks of one side of the body only. The seizures may become generalised and evolve into other types such as drop attacks, myoclonic or infantile spasms. The seizures are often very frequent and prolonged seizures may occur.

Sturge-Weber Syndrome - Legs Sturge-Weber syndrome is a disease that affects the skin and nervous system (neurocutaneous) and is associated with Port Wine Stain, red vascular markings on the face and other parts of the body (shown here on the legs). This is an unusual case, due to the large size of the lesion (extensive involvement). Occasionally seizures or learning disorders are also associated with Sturge-Weber syndrome.
Sturge-Weber Syndrome - Soles of Feet This picture shows the soles of two feet involved with port wine stain. Port wine stains in the area of the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve, with ipsilateral vascular anomalies constitute the Sturge-Weber syndrome. Glaucoma, retinal detachment, calcification of the outer layers of the cerebral cortex, and seizures may also be seen.

Sturge-Weber syndrome is a rare disease with no recognized hereditary component. It consists of a red discoloration (portwine stain) involving the skin on the face. Usually the eyelids are also involved. The mucous membranes (lining of the mouth and nose) and the meninges (covering of the brain) can also be affected. The cause of Sturge-Weber is unknown and there are no known preventive measures. Return to Top What are the symptoms?
Since brain involvement is variable, a wide spectrum of neurologic, developmental, and visual problems can exist. These may include seizures, visual problems, weakness or paralysis on one side, and/or learning disabilities ranging from mild to severe. Return to Top How is this syndrome diagnosed?

Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed Clinical Presentation:
A cutaneous vascular nevus is seen usually along the distribution of the trigeminal nerve. Symptoms consist of seizures, contralateral hemiparesis, hemiatrophy, glaucoma, mental retardation, and abnormal behavior. Etiology/Pathophysiology:
Small, thin walled angiomatous vessels in the pia of the cerebral convexities cause pericapillary calcification of the underlying cortex and the ipsilateral cutaneous vascular nevus (port wine flame nevus). Pathology:
Small thin walled angiomatous vessels in the pia of the cerebral convexities are associated with pericapillary calcification in the underlying cerebral cortex. Imaging Findings:
Calcification is usually unilateral, asymmetric, and curvilinear and seen most frequently in the posterior parietal and occipital regions. Brain atrophy on the side of the angioma is seen with compensatory calvarial thickening, a small hemicranium, ventriculomegaly and wide subarachnoid spaces. DDX:

General Discussion
Sturge-Weber Syndrome is composed of three major symptoms. Excessive blood vessel growths (leptomeningeal angiomas) are accompanied by accumulations of calcium inside the brain, and seizures. Facial birth marks (nevus flammeus) appear usually on one side of the face. Angiomas similar to those found in the brain can develop inside the eye, often with secondary glaucoma.
Symptoms
Nevus Flammeus is a discoloration on the face which is the red color of port wine. In Sturge-Weber Syndrome this "port wine stain" is noted at birth and generally occurs on the same side of the head as the excessive blood vessel growths (leptomeningeal angiomatoses) in the brain which are accompanied by accumulations of calcium (intracranial calcifications). The port wine stain primarily occurs along the distribution of the trigeminal nerve in the face, although in some cases it does not appear at all. Approximately thirty seven percent of patients have portwine stains on both sides of the face. Involvement of the extremities or trunk, in addition to the face, occurs in up to thirty-six percent of patients. Although the discoloration usually affects only one side of the face, a slight extension over the midface occurs in approximately fifty percent of cases. The port wine stain tends to deepen in color with age, and nodular elevations may also develop.
