Are you or your employees tired before the day begins? Do you suffer chronic aches and pains (real or imaginary)? Find you're not giving clients your absolute best? If so, you may be losing the battle against stress. According to Human Resource News (Nov. 1998), "stress has increased dramatically as a reason why today's employees are missing work, almost tripling since 1995." The 1997 National Study of the Changing Work force states that 36% of employees often feel drained or "used up" at the end of a workday. Even more eye opening, employees report feeling tired before the workday begins! What are the long term implications of stress? Anyone experiencing on going stress provides a fertile breeding ground for illness. These illnesses range from the common cold to more severe problems, such as heart attacks and strokes. What Can Individuals Do?

151. Helping Teenagers With Stress - AACAP Facts For Families # 66
Teenagers, like adults, may experience stress everyday and can benefit fromlearning stress management skills. HELPING TEENAGERS WITH stress. No.
H ELPING T EENAGERS WITH S TRESS No. 66 Updated (01/02) Teenagers, like adults, may experience stress everyday and can benefit from learning stress management skills. Most teens experience more stress when they perceive a situation as dangerous, difficult, or painful and they do not have the resources to cope. Some sources of stress for teens might include:
  • school demands and frustrations
  • negative thoughts and feelings about themselves
  • changes in their bodies
  • problems with friends and/or peers at school
  • unsafe living environment/neighborhood
  • separation or divorce of parents
  • chronic illness or severe problems in the family
  • death of a loved one
  • moving or changing schools
  • taking on too many activities or having too high expectations
  • family financial problems
Some teens become overloaded with stress. When it happens, inadequately managed stress can lead to anxiety, withdrawal, aggression, physical illness, or poor coping skills such as drug and/or alcohol use. When we perceive a situation as difficult or painful, changes occur in our minds and bodies to prepare us to respond to danger. This "fight, flight, or freeze" response includes faster heart and breathing rate, increased blood to muscles of arms and legs, cold or clammy hands and feet, upset stomach and/or a sense of dread. The same mechanism that turns on the stress response can turn it off. As soon as we decide that a situation is no longer dangerous, changes can occur in our minds and bodies to help us relax and calm down. This "relaxation response" includes decreased heart and breathing rate and a sense of well being. Teens that develop a "relaxation response" and other stress management skills feel less helpless and have more choices when responding to stress.

stress. WHAT IS stress? We think of stress as something which is coming from outthere, and the best response we can make is to grit our teeth and carry on.
Causes of stress How to cope with stress WHAT IS STRESS?
Looming deadlines, a relationship crisis, a dead battery and the fuse gets shorter and shorter. We think of stress as something which is coming from out there, and the best response we can make is to grit our teeth and carry on. The word "stress" , though, actually refers to our response, in mind, body, and spirit, to what is buffeting usand there's a lot we can do about that!
Exhaustion, depression, agitation, disturbed sleep, the clutch in the throat, the stomach ache or headachethis level is often the one which comes to our attention first. These are signs of a process that has already begun happening. The body has reacted to an alarm by becoming aroused, releasing hormones in an effort to cope with the threat. But the threat continues and so do the accompanying emotions of fear, anger and frustration. The body finally becomes exhausted by its constant state of arousal, and the immune systems begin to be less effective. The ability to function drops (the overdue paper won't come together), and on top of it we are developing a wretched cold. How can we interrupt this cycle?

Peter's Study Steps Fear of Math Helpful Strategies Helpful Techniques Lack of Preparation ... Test Review Links From Peter Morris
Dated Dear Fellow Studier, I have a confession to make. I've never liked studying. There was always too many other things I liked to do. Unfortunately, taking classes and tests are a part of every student's life and studying goes along with them. I decided to put together this website to make life easier on other student's that didn't like to study either and would hopefully give them some help. Top Study Steps for Your Exam
  • Study in a place that is quiet and free from distractions.
Start studying several days before the exam. It is better to study for a couple of hours a day over the course of several days than to try to study for many hours the night before the exam. Smaller blocks of study time help you maintain concentration and remember information better. Don't study through all the information at once.

    Stress Management What is Stress?
Stress is simply the body's non-specific response to any demand made on it. Stress is not by definition synonymous with nervous tension or anxiety. Stress provides the means to express talents and energies and pursue happiness; it can also cause exhaustion and illness, either physical or psychological; heart attacks and accidents. The important thing to remember about stress is that certain forms are normal and essential. As the body responds to various forms of physical or psychological stress, certain predictable changes occur. These include increased heart rate, blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), and secretions of stimulatory hormones. These responses to stress will occur whether the stress is positive or negative in nature. In lay terms, it is known as the "fight or flight" mechanism. Continual exposure lowers the body's ability to cope with additional forms of psychological or physiological stress. The results of continuing stress may cause disruption in one or more of the following areas of health: physical, emotional, spiritual and/or social.

When stress triggers the body's " fight or flight " response, we stop digesting food or making internal repairs. Breathing becomes quick and shallow. Our bodies are flooded with adrenaline and other emergency hormones. If this continues too much carbon dioxide is removed from the blood, and this affects the nerves and muscles which will give symptoms such as faintness, pappitaions and panic atacks.

    Can "workplace stress" be defined?
We hear a lot about stress, but what is it? Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary defines stress as "the result produced when a structure, system or organism is acted upon by forces that disrupt equilibrium or produce strain". In simpler terms, stress is the result of any emotional, physical, social, economic, or other factors that require a response or change. It is generally believed that some stress is okay (sometimes referred to as "challenge"or "positive stress") but when stress occurs in amounts that you cannot handle, both mental and physical changes may occur. "Workplace stress" then is the harmful physical and emotional responses that can happen when there is a conflict between job demands on the employee and the amount of control an employee has over meeting these demands. In general, the combination of high demands in a job and a low amount of control over the situation can lead to stress.
