STRESS AND BURNOUT IN MINISTRY
by Rowland Croucher
It was a grey Canadian morning in April 1982. The children had gone to school, my wife to work, and I did something I'd never done before. I turned the phone down, put a note on the front door, and went back to bed. I was burned out - and within two months resigned my ministry there. Meanwhile, back in Australia, four books about ministry had come off the presses. Note the titles: The Plight of the Australian Clergy, High Calling High Stress, Battle Guide for Christian Leaders - an Endangered Species, and Conflict and Decline.
FIRST, THE BAD NEWS
(1) 'Stress now contributes to 90% of all diseases. Half of all visits to doctors are stress-related'. 'Anxiety reduction' may now be the largest single business in the Western world. (2) 'Doctors, lawyers and clergy have the most problems with drug abuse, alcoholism and suicide.' (3) 'Research 25 years ago showed clergy dealing with stress better than most professionals. Since 1980, studies in the U.S. describe an alarming spread of burnout in the profession. For example, Jerdon found three out of four parish ministers (sample: 11,500) reported severe stress causing 'anguish, worry, bewilderment, anger, depression, fear, and alienation'. Why is pastoral ministry so stressful?

Cranial Integration is a new, gentle, powerful form of structural craniosacral pain and stress relief and performance enhancement, uniquely combining craniosacral myofascial release, Cranial Kinesiology and craniosacral fluid/energy mobilization.
Cranial Integration follows in the tradition of Ida Rolf's Structural Integration, creating real structural fascial change, from the inside out. Cranial Integration follows in the tradition of Postural Integration, honoring the spiritual and energetic nature of mind and body.
Cranial Integration is received fully-clothed, and never involves adjustment or manipulation of the neck or spine. Treatments last an hour, and at least four initial visits are recommended at the beginning to receive the Cranial Integration "Protocol" (about 200 sutural and fascial mobilizations) to evaluate therapeutic results and to develop a further individualized treatment plan. Visit the pages below for more information.
Cranial Integration is the most powerful form of craniosacral pain relief and natural healing I've found in 20 years as a therapist! Patients make much faster progress with Cranial Integration

COPING WITH EXAM STRESS
General Exam Stress-Busting Tips:
Believe in yourself. You wouldn't have been given a place on the course if you didn't have the ability to do it. Therefore, if you prepare for the exams properly you should do fine, meaning that there is no need to worry excessively. Don't try to be perfect. It's great to succeed and reach for the stars. But keep things in balance. If you think that "anything less than A+ means I've failed" then you are creating mountains of unnecessary stress for yourself. Aim to do your best but recognise that none of us can be perfect all of the time. Take steps to overcome problems. If you find you don't understand some of your course material, getting stressed out won't help. Instead, take action to address the problem directly by seeing your course tutor or getting help from your class mates. Don't keep things bottled up. Confiding in someone you trust and who will be supportive is a great way of alleviating stress and worry. Keep things in perspective.

69. Urinary Stress Incontinence: Symptoms, Risk Factors And Treatment
Risk factors, symptoms, and treatments for this disorder are discussed.
http://www.about-stress-incontinence.com
Community Latest News
Stress incontinence doesn't actually have anything to do with emotional stress. The term refers to urine leakage during physical activity that results in increased pressure on the abdomen. This pressure need not be much: bending over, laughing and coughing can cause urine leakage in stress incontinence sufferers. Many people suffer silently, too embarrassed to seek help. However, there's good news: treatment for urine leakage is readily available and the Incontinence Treatment Tool can help clarify the options.
Male/Female Urology and Stress Incontinence
Female urology is the branch of medicine dealing with the urinary tract and the urogenital system in women. According to urologists, stress incontinence can strike either sex, although two thirds of all sufferers are women.
In either sex, pelvic muscles, which normally support the bladder, can become weakened due to injury or aging. This allows the bladder to “drop” and push down towards the urethra. Because of this, the muscles that usually tighten and help the urethral sphincter to control urine flow cannot operate as effectively as they should.
Risk Factors
Pregnancy often causes temporary bladder problems. In many women, pregnancy and childbirth can result in weakened pelvic muscles, and problems with incontinence can result. In these circumstances, according to female urology studies, stress incontinence is usually temporary, and goes away as the muscles and urinary system regains tone following pregnancy. In addition to childbirth, many types of pelvic surgery can also weaken pelvic muscles.

Stress September 2001 WHAT IS STRESS? The stress response of the body is somewhat like an airplane readying for take-off. Virtually all systems (eg, the heart and blood vessels, the immune system, the lungs, the digestive system, the sensory organs, and brain) are modified to meet the perceived danger. External and Internal Stressors People can experience either external or internal stressors.
  • External stressors include adverse physical conditions (such as pain or hot or cold temperatures) or stressful psychological environments (such as poor working conditions or abusive relationships). Humans, like animals, can experience external stressors.
  • Internal stressors can also be physical (infections, inflammation) or psychological. An example of an internal psychological stressor is intense worry about a harmful event that may or may not occur. As far as anyone can tell, internal psychological stressors are rare or absent in most animals except humans.
Acute or Chronic Stress Stressors can also be defined as short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic).

Work related stress
Some academics have argued that stress is an almost meaningless term and does not exist. However, a convincing body of research shows that whatever you choose to call it, there is a clear link between poor work organisation and subsequent ill health. These pages explain what HSE is doing to address the issue of stress at work, and provide access to a range of information, resources and further points of contact.
  • Work-related stress is a serious problem for organisations. Tackling it effectively can result in significant benefits for organisations. There are things organisations can do to prevent and control work-related stress. The law requires organisations to take action.
HSE commissioned research has indicated that:
  • about half a million people in the UK experience work-related stress at a level they believe is making them ill;
