After all, stress has been around since Adam and Eve were evicted from the Garden of Eden. Is it because there is much more stress today? Is it because the nature of contemporary stress is somehow different and more dangerous Or is it because scientific research has increasingly confirmed the crucial role stress can play in causing and aggravating different disorders and the diverse mechanisms of actions responsible for mediating its multitudinous effects The answer to all of these questions is a very resounding "YES!"

    stress Management What is stress? In so adjusting to different circumstances,stress will help or hinder us depending on how we react to it.
    http://www.ivf.com/stress.html
    Stress Management What is Stress?
    Stress is the "wear and tear" our bodies experience as we adjust to our continually changing environment; it has physical and emotional effects on us and can create positive or negative feelings. As a positive influence, stress can help compel us to action; it can result in a new awareness and an exciting new perspective. As a negative influence, it can result in feelings of distrust, rejection, anger, and depression, which in turn can lead to health problems such as headaches, upset stomach, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. With the death of a loved one, the birth of a child, a job promotion, or a new relationship, we experience stress as we readjust our lives. In so adjusting to different circumstances, stress will help or hinder us depending on how we react to it. How Can I Eliminate Stress from My Life?
    As we have seen, positive stress adds anticipation and excitement to life, and we all thrive under a certain amount of stress. Deadlines, competitions, confrontations, and even our frustrations and sorrows add depth and enrichment to our lives. Our goal is not to eliminate stress but to learn how to manage it and how to use it to help us. Insufficient stress acts as a depressant and may leave us feeling bored or dejected; on the other hand, excessive stress may leave us feeling "tied up in knots." What we need to do is find the optimal level of stress which will individually motivate but not overwhelm each of us.

    What Is Stress? It is different things to different people. To a mountaineer it is the challenge of pushing physical resources to the limit by striving to achieve a demanding goal. To the homeward bound motorist it can be the hassles of heavy traffic and obnoxious exhaust fumes. To the student it can be exam pressure. Take a piece of paper and write the word stress at the top. Now write down all the words and images that come to your mind as you think about this word. Most people respond to the word stress in negative ways. They see it as a destructive, debilitating force. However, not all stress is negative. The word eustress has been coined to describe positive stress. Eustress results from exhilarating experiences. It is the type of stress you are likely to experience when you inherit a large amount of money or receive an unexpected promotion or reward. Eustress is the stress of winning and achieving. Negative stress is distress. It is the stress of losing, failing, overworking and not coping. Distress affects people in a negative often harmful manner. We all experience distress from time to time. It is a normal, unavoidable part of living.

    Recognizing Stress
    Most people are exposed to much higher levels of stress than they realize.
    Your Stress Scale
    A self-test you can use to determine how much stress your are really facing.
    Brain Chemical Messengers
    Brain cells "talk to each other" by means of chemical messengers. When a person is exposed to too much stress, chemical communication in the brain begins to fail. When these messengers fail, a person suffers from sleep disturbance, aches and pains, depression and anxiety. This condition is called OVERSTRESS.
    Three Happy Messengers
    Three brain messengers control your sleeping, your energy levels, and your feelings of pain and pleasure.
    Pick-Me-Up's
    Chemicals from the grocery store shelf, as well as drugs, can temporarily restore your brain messenger function but not completely, and not for long.These substances are called "Pick-Me-Up's." Pick-Me-Up's are the WRONG way to handle overstress.

    JOB STRESS
    The NIOSH report on the left is an excellent resource that cites the following:
    40% of workers reported their job was very or extremely stressful;
    25% view their jobs as the number one stressor in their lives;
    Three fourths of employees believe that workers have more on-the-job stress than a generation ago
    29% of workers felt quite a bit or extremely stressed at work
    26 percent of workers said they were "often or very often burned out or stressed by their work";
    Job stress is more strongly associated with health complaints than financial or family problems.
    This information was obtained in the 1990's in large surveys by Northwestern National Life Insurance Co, Princeton Survey Research Associates, St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Co., Yale University and The Families and Work Institute.
    More recently, the 2000 annual " Attitudes In The American Workplace VI " Gallup Poll sponsored by the Marlin Company found that:
    80% of workers feel stress on the job, nearly half say they need help in learning how to manage stress and 42% say their coworkers need such help; 14% of respondents had felt like striking a coworker in the past year, but didn't;

    David Baldwin's Trauma Information Pages
    Last Revised: 30 May 2004 W elcome to the Trauma Information Pages! These Trauma Pages focus primarily on emotional trauma and traumatic stress, including PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder) and dissociation, whether following individual traumatic experience(s) or a large-scale disaster. The purpose of this award winning site is to provide information for clinicians and researchers in the traumatic-stress field. Specifically, my interests here include both clinical and research aspects of trauma responses and their resolution. For example:
  • What goes on biologically in the brain during traumatic experience and its resolution?
  • Which psychotherapeutic procedures are most effective with traumatic symptoms, for which patients and why?
  • How can we best measure clinical efficacy and treatment outcome for trauma survivor populations? Supportive resources supplement the more academic or research information of interest to clinicians, researchers, and students. I do realize that these are not mutually exclusive groups. Since 19 May 1995 (a month after the Oklahoma City bombing), this site has welcomed 1,375,675 visits (615 today).

    20. Stress-Related Problems
    and advice for parents.......
    http://www.helpforfamilies.com/stress1.htm
    Stress-Related Problems
    Adjustment Disorders
    Adjustment Disorders are reactions to stress that have lasted less than six months. The types of reactions can be very different, sadness, anxiousness, anger, or a combination of all. Adjustment Disorders become apparent within three months of some stress in a child's life. During such times, it is common for a child's schoolwork to suffer. Again, if a child has always (or for a year or more) shown the symptoms and had poor school achievement, the problem is not an Adjustment Disorder. Parents' divorce, a death or serious illness in the family, or being in an automobile accident are all typical of the stressful events which cause Adjustment Disorders in children. A child who has experienced such stress may appear normal for a month or so, then change. The difficulty with such reactions is that just when everyone else is ready to forget the painful event, this child begins to show that he or she is still in turmoil about it.
    What To Do
    Usually, Adjustment Disorders are solved by good communication. Sometimes the family can provide this healing talk. Talk to the child about their feelings about the death, or divorce, or whatever. Follow the principles in HELP for Parents, Active Listening , in talking with the child.
