What is strep throat?
Strep throat is an infection of the tissues in the back of the throat (pharynx) and/or the tonsils or adenoids . The tissues become irritated and inflamed, causing a sudden, severe sore throat that may also be referred to as acute pharyngitis.
What causes strep throat?
Strep throat is caused by streptococcal (strep) bacteria. There are many different strains of strep bacteria, some of which cause more serious illness than others. The type of strep that most commonly infects the throat is called group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus (GABS). Other types that can sometimes infect the throat are groups C and G strep bacteria. A strep throat infection is not as common as a sore throat caused by a virus.

POINT-OF-CARE GUIDES Strep Throat MARK H. EBELL, M.D., M.S., Athens, Georgia Applying the Evidence: Justin is a 13-year-old boy who has had sore throat, fever, and swollen glands for two days. On examination, he has exudative tonsillitis and tender anterior cervical nodes, but no posterior cervical adenopathy. What is his probability of having strep throat? Answer: Justin has a strep score of 5, which indicates a 52 percent risk of GABHS pharyngitis. It would be reasonable to treat him empirically. As another option, the physician could obtain a specimen for throat culture and call the patient in two days to discontinue the antibiotics if the culture is negative; however, the physician should consider the possibility of false-negative culture results when the pretest probability of strep throat is sufficiently high. A third option is to base treatment on a rapid step test for high-risk patients, although the physician should keep in mind that this test has the same risk of false-negative results as the throat culture. Clinical Question What is the probability of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal (GABHS) pharyngitis (strep throat) in a patient who presents with sore throat?

Sore Throat
There are many different causes for sore throats. Some causes are easily treated, some require antibiotics, and some cannot be treated at all you just have to wait out the cause, although over-the-counter medicines can help relieve the pain.
Sore Throat Due to Dry Air
This is actually quite common I get them a lot myself in the winter, especially in cold weather when I forget to fill up the humidifier tanks with water. If the air is dry, your throat can dry out a bit with your breathing and become sore. Solution: drink plenty of fluids and make sure your house is humidified properly. (I have noticed that furnace humidifiers do not necessarily do a good enough job of keeping the house properly humid. Even with a furnace humidifier you may still need table-top humidifers to stay comfortable.)
Sore Throat Due to Coughs, Colds, and Runny Noses
Coughing by itself can make your throat feel sore. So can postnasal drip mucus from the nose dripping down the back of the throat. If you have a dry cough, cough suppressants some of which you can buy without a prescription can quieten the cough and cut down on throat irritation. If you are coughing because of postnasal drip, I believe you should

If caused by the group A streptococcus, it is called "strep throat". The chronic form can be caused by a continuing infection of the sinuses , lungs or mouth, or by constant irritation from smoking, breathing heavily polluted air, food allergies or consuming too much alcohol, or by swallowing substances that scald, corrode or scratch the throat. Pharyngitis is a common illness. Even strep throat is usually a self-limiting disease. Controlled trials show that clinical recovery is similar in cases with and without the use of antibiotics. The "streptophobia" associated with the risk of rheumatic fever and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis is probably unwarranted today, although proper care is still important. Epidemiological surveys demonstrate a correlation between vitamin C deficiency and the development of post-streptococcal consequences. Rheumatic fever is virtually nonexistent in the

Is sore throat always a strep throat symptom? How about high fever? The symptoms of strep throat vary a bit, depending on whether it's an adult or a child who has it.
  • However, for both age groups, sore throat is the number one strep throat symptom - it can come on very quickly. Most sore throats are viral, and these improve without any treatment - strep throat is bacterial. The sore throat means throat pain and great difficulty swallowing. Both groups also have the strep throat symptom of red and swollen tonsils . The tonsils may have white streaks, or patches of pus, or they may have a gray or white coating on them. If you get the sufferer to open their mouth, you can see the strep throat symptom of redness on the throat, roof of the mouth, and tonsils

Prevention and treatment of strep throat
Strep throat is the infection and inflammation of the pharynx by Group A streptococcal bacteria. It is spead through fluid droplets from the nose or throat of an infected person. Try these prevention tips.
Strep throat is the infection and inflammation of the pharynx by Group A streptococcal bacteria. It is transmitted through fluid droplets from the nose or throat of an infected person. Strep throat is contagious and individuals usually experience symptoms within two to seven days of exposure. The ailment is usually cured, with antibiotic treatment, by the twelfth day of infection. The fever stops within three to five days with the throat soreness passing soon after. There are cases in which a small percentage of children have become carriers of the infection without experiencing the symptoms themselves. The active bacteria is present in these asymptomatic carriers and can be repeatedly passed to others. Group A bacteria can affect all ages but is especially prevalent among children. A child with strep throat may experience chills, throat pain, nausea, headache, loss of appetite, swollen neck glands and a general ill feeling. There is usually some difficulty with swallowing food. Very young children, however, may feel discomfort more in the stomach area than the throat. Often, the tonsils may be covered with pus. In these cases a physician should be consulted to perform a throat culture test. bodyOffer(31134) A throat culture is a painless procedure in which a physician uses a swab to obtain a sample of throat secretions and examines the secretions for strep A bacteria. If the strep infection is confirmed, the doctor will write an order for a course of antibiotic treatment, which usually lasts for ten days. It is always important that this course is followed to completion even though recovery may seem complete after three to four days. All bacteria cannot be destroyed if the course of treatment is not followed correctly. Aftercare should include observation for signs of rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis, especially among children two to twelve years of age. Children are usually free to return to normal activity and school when the course of antibiotic treatment has reached the fifth day and when appetite and general physical well-being reappear.

Newer drugs more effective at curing strep throat than penicillin
Study’s findings contradict long-held belief that penicillin is best for the job
Pediatricians treating a child who has strep throat should reconsider the role of penicillin given that a newer class of antibiotics called cephalosporins are three times more effective, according to a study being published in the April issue of Pediatrics. The findings will spark widespread debate, because they contradict long-established guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Heart Association, and World Health Organization. Strep throat is a bacterial infection that can be spread by personal contact, including coughing or sneezing, often affecting school-age children. Penicillin is considered the gold standard for treating strep throat, but pediatricians should realize that cephalosporins are more effective in killing the germs, says Janet Casey, M.D., the study's lead author and a University of Rochester Medical Center pediatrician. Cephalosporin drugs – such as Cephalexin, Cefadroxil, and Cefprozil, Cephdinir – are oral medications that come in liquid and pill forms, and are safe for infants, children, and teens. The new study presents findings from a meta-analysis, a review of previous studies done about the efficacy of cephalosporin drugs and penicillin. "We carefully examined 35 studies done since 1969, all of which discussed whether cephalosporin or penicillin are more effective in treating strep throat," Casey says, noting more than 7,000 children participated in the studies. "Children who have strep throat will have a superior outcome if they receive cephalosporin rather than penicillin." The findings indicate that the newer class of drugs has a more impressive bacterial cure rate.

What is streptococcal pharyngitis?
Streptococcal pharyngitis (sore throat), or "strep throat", is an infection of the throat and tonsils caused by the bacteria Streptococci pyogenes , also known as Group A streptococci (GAS). What are the symptoms of streptococcal pharyngitis?
The symptoms of streptococcal pharyngitis include sore throat, pain on swallowing, fever, swollen and tender lymph nodes in the neck, and fatigue. The tonsils are swollen and often covered with pus. The roof of the mouth may have fine red lesions called petechiae. Cough, hoarseness, and runny nose are NOT symptoms of streptococcal pharyngitis, but indicate viral upper respiratory infections. It is important to realize that most sore throats are not due to streptococcal infections. When strep throat is accompanied by a red rash and fever, it is called scarlet fever. If left untreated, streptococcal pharyngitis lasts from 2 to 5 days; with antibiotics it lasts about 1-3 days. The rash of scarlet fever fades after several days but can be followed by flaking or peeling skin, especially around the fingertips, 1 to 3 weeks later.

Definition
Streptococcal sore throat , or strep throat as it is more commonly called, is an infection of the mucous membranes lining the pharynx. Sometimes the tonsils are also infected ( tonsillitis ). The disease is caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria. Untreated strep throat may develop into rheumatic fever or other serious conditions. Description
Strep throat accounts for between five and ten percent of all sore throats. Although anyone can get strep throat, it is most common in school age children. People who smoke, who are fatigued, run down, or who live in damp, crowded conditions are also more likely to become infected. Children under age two and adults who are not around children are less likely to get the disease. Strep throat occurs most frequently from November to April. The disease passes directly from person to person by coughing, sneezing, and close contact. Very occasionally the disease is passed through food, when a food handler infected with strep throat accidentally contaminates food by coughing or sneezing. Statistically, if someone in the household is infected, one out of every four other household members may get strep throat within two to seven days.
A person with strep throat suddenly develops a painful sore throat one to five days after being exposed to the streptococcus bacteria. The pain is indistinguishable from sore throats caused by other diseases.
