Does my child need to see a doctor right away? How is strep throat treated? How contagious is it? ... Is there any way I can prevent strep? My child is complaining of a sore throat; what are the chances that it's a strep throat?
About one in 10. The first place to look for clues is inside your child's mouth. Are his tonsils swollen, bright red, flecked with white? These are the clearest and most common signatures of infection by the streptococcus bacteria. A fever above 101 degrees F, chills, and a noticeable swelling and soreness of the glands in the neck just under the jaw are also warning signs. A bad cold or the flu can cause such symptoms, too, and they often show up at the same time of year, between October and April. But a strep throat usually lasts longer than a plain old sore one. If it looks bad in there, and lasts for more than a couple of days, call a doctor. Does my child need to see a doctor right away?

What is strep throat?
While many people use the terms sore throat, tonsillitis, and strep throat interchangeably, there are significant differences between these conditions. Understanding the differences can give parents a better idea of how and when to be concerned and seek advice from the child's doctor. Tonsils and tonsillitis
The tonsils are red, oval clumps of tissue located at the back and to the sides of the throat. This location allows the tonsils to intercept germs as they enter the child's body through the nose and throat. They contain infection-fighting cells and antibodies that stop the spread of the germs further into the body. When the tonsils become red, sore, and swollen, this inflammation is called tonsillitis. This is not a specific term, as there are many causes of tonsil inflammation. Viral sore throat
In infants and children, the most common cause of tonsillitis is an infecting germ called a virus. For a viral infection, no antibiotic is usually needed and the infection can be expected to run a four-to-six day course. During this period, the child can be treated with lots of fluids, rest, and medicine to reduce pain and/or fever, such as

What is strep throat?
Strep throat is an infection caused by the Streptococcus pyogenes (strep) Group A bacteria. The infection is more common in children than in adults. What are the symptoms of strep throat?
Children with strep throat often have a fever and complain of sore throat, headache and stomachache. They may also have swollen, tender glands in the neck, or sores around the nose. Scarlet fever, a rare form of strep infection, is characterized by a sore throat, more general symptoms, such as fatigue, and a red rash on the body that feels like sandpaper. Some children can get very serious complications, such as rheumatic fever, and acute glomerulonephritis, if the infection is not treated completely with antibiotics. How is strep throat transmitted?
The strep bacteria is found in an infected person's saliva. The infection spreads through the air when the infected person talks, coughs or sneezes. The spread of infection can be stopped by treating the infected person with an antibiotic. It is difficult to diagnose strep throat just by looking at the throat. The physician has to take a culture (or swab) of the throat to see if strep bacteria are present. If strep throat is diagnosed, the physician will prescribe an antibiotic, usually penicillin. This medication comes in the form of a pill, a liquid or an injection. If treatment is begun soon after the infection has started, the child will feel better very soon. This treatment may also prevent the serious complications that can result from strep throat.

Strep Throat What it is "Strep throat" is the common name for an infection of the throat caused by one particular type of streptococcus bacteria. Most sore throats are caused by viruses, not by streptococci and are not strep infections. Strep throat is fairly common among college age patients. The diagnosis requires examination by a health care professional who can distinguish this disease from other upper respiratory infections. Diagnosis of strep throat can only be confirmed by laboratory testing. Symptoms The symptoms vary from a mildly sore throat with virtually no other complaints, to a severe illness with difficulty swallowing, high fever, painful swollen throat and swelling of the lymph glands in the neck. It is generally of a more sudden severe onset than the more gradual low grade discomfort seen with viral sore throat. Treatment Treatment requires antibiotics, usually penicillin or erythromycin, for a period of ten days. With appropriate medication, patients are no longer contagious after 2 or 3 days. Additional treatment consists of rest and salt water gargles to relieve discomfort (1/2 tsp. of salt in one glass of warm water), and aspirin or tylenol to reduce fever and pain. The treatment of sore throats due to viral infections with antibiotics is a practice to be avoided. Viral sore throats do not heal faster or more completely with antibiotic treatment, and the use of unnecessary antibiotics only assists your body in colonizing antibiotic resistent strains of common bacteria which can cause other infections.

Description Strep throat is a throat infection caused by the group A ß-hemolytic streptococcus bacteria . Strep throat infections are contagious and strep bacteria commonly pass from person to person in the fluid droplets of coughs and sneezes. Streptococcus bacteria can also contaminate food, water and milk. In some cases, a strep throat infection can lead to scarlet fever, or be followed by rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis (a kidney problem). Strep throat is the most common type of throat infection caused by bacteria, and it tends to affect children between 5 and 15 years old. Despite being the most common type of throat infection caused by bacteria, strep throat only causes about 15% of all cases of sore throats with the vast majority caused by viruses Symptoms and Signs Diagnosis and Treatment Since bacteria can be treated with antibiotics while viruses can not, diagnosis will focus on determining if the sore throat is indeed strep throat and thus can be treated with antibiotics. Swabs of fluids from the back of the throat are usually taken and often an instant strep test can be done on the spot. Otherwise the swab of fluids is sent to be analysed for the presence of bacteria.

Acute Tonsillitis (Strep Throat)
The disease usually begins with high temperature and possibly chills, especially in children. The patient complains of a persistent pain in the throat, and pain radiating to the ear on swallowing. Opening the mouth is often difficult and painful, the tongue is coated, and there is a mouth odor. The patient may also complain of headache, thick speech, marked feeling of malaise, as well as swelling and tenderness of the neck glands (lymph nodes). Both tonsils and the surrounding area including the posterior pharyngeal wall are deep red and swollen. Later, whitish spots (follicles) form on the tonsils, hence the name follicular tonsillitis. There is also swelling of the neighboring organs such as the faucial pillars, the uvula, and the base of the tongue.
Chronic Tonsillitis
Chronic tonsillitis refers to repeated attacks of acute tonsillitis.

STREP THROAT
What is Strep Throat and is it Contagious ?
Strep throat is a highly contagious bacterial throat infection that can infect both adults and children. Strep throat results in an often severe sore throat, accompanied with a fever, headache, and swollen neck glands. Children, may also experience nausea and /or stomach pain. It is important to diagnose and treat Strep throat early because infection is contagious and certain Strep throat infections may lead to complications if left untreated. If left untreated, Strep throat can lead to the follow:
  • rheumatic fever , (can cause arthritis and heart problems), scarlet fever , (scarlatina), a common complication of Strep throat - involving a skin rash usually starting under the arms and in the groin area - spreading to the rest of the body. nephritis (a kidney inflammation resulting in bleeding into the kidney and urine)

STREP TREATMENTS:
Strep Throat Treatment and Remedies to Cure Strep and Sore Throats ?
Strep throat, will most likely be treated by prescribing an oral antibiotic such as penicillin. Strep Throat Treatment vs. Treatment for Viral Throat Infection The treatment of throat infections depend on the cause of the infection. Infection may be the cause of a virus or bacterial infection, such as Strep. In the case of a virus, it is not helpful to take antibiotics, as there is no cure for a virus. Strep throat on the other hand is bacterial and does respond to antibiotics. It is impossible to predict from the look of the throat, or the degree of pain, whether the cause is a bacterium. Most viruses subside in a few days, and therefore the longer the infection has lasted, the more likely it is bacterial infection and best treated with an antibiotic. Strep Throat Treatment – Other Remedies Strep throat treatment suggestions to help relieve the symptoms of strep throat, include:
  • gargle with warm salt water - 3/4 teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of warm water (expel the liquid after gargling) Get plenty of rest Drink plenty of liquids Avoid citrus products like orange juice Active Manuka Honey – consume Active Manuka Honey (UMF10+), this honey has proven antibacterial action against many bacterium, including Streptococcus pyogenes which causes sore throats.

Tonsillitis, strep throat, sore throat…these terms are often used together, but how are they related? A persistent sore throat is generally a symptom of something else—usually a virus or bacteria infecting part of the upper respiratory tract (mouth, nose and throat). Having a sore throat doesn't necessarily mean that you or your child has strep throat or infected tonsils. And having a sore throat or being diagnosed with strep throat doesn't necessarily mean that your tonsils are infected, too. It can be very confusing! Tonsils act as part of the body's immune system to filter germs, bacteria and viruses when they enter the body through the nose and mouth. Sometimes the tonsils themselves can become infected or inflamed, a condition known as tonsillitis. Chronic or recurring tonsillitis is a common reason for children and adults to have their tonsils removed, a procedure known as a tonsillectomy. When tonsillitis is present, the surrounding throat area often becomes infected at the same time (pharyngitis). "Strep throat" is the common name for a particular type of bacterial infection in the throat caused by the streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. Chronic or recurring strep throat infections are another reason the tonsils are sometimes removed, though this happens less frequently today than it did 20 years ago.

Overview A sore, scratchy throat is often the first sign you're getting sick. In fact, it's one of the most common reasons people see a doctor. Some sore throats, such as those that accompany a cold or the flu, are caused by viral infections and usually go away on their own in a few days. But others are caused by bacterial infections and typically require medical treatment. Strep throat is a bacterial throat infection. It occurs most commonly in children between the ages of 6 and 12. In addition to a very sore throat, symptoms typically include a fever and swollen lymph glands. Younger children may even complain of abdominal pain. If your child has these symptoms, see your pediatrician. A quick test can diagnose strep throat in most cases.

Strep Throat
Strep throat is caused by the Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria, also called group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS). This infection is most common in children over three years of age and begins with a fever, a red, swollen throat, and tonsils that can have a white coating of pus. Other symptoms often include swollen glands, decreased appetite and a decreased energy level. Related Topics Sore Throats Mononucleosis Scarlet Fever If strep throat is suspected as the cause of tonsillitis in your child, your doctor will do a throat swab to confirm that there is infection with strep bacteria. A rapid antigen test is usually performed in the office. If this test is negative, there is still a small chance that your child has strep and an overnight culture will then be done to see if any strep bacteria grow. It is important to remember that you can not tell the difference between strep throat and other viral causes of sore throats. Just because there is pus on your child's tonsils, it does not mean that he needs an antibiotic. Antibiotics are only used to treat sore throats that are caused by strep, so if the tests are negative, your child most likely has a virus that will need to clear up on its own.
