Has your throat ever felt hot like a sunburn, prickly like a porcupine, and rough like sandpaper? And on top of all that, you could hardly swallow? You also had a fever, a headache , and a stomachache , your neck hurt, and you didn't feel like doing anything. You may have had strep throat. Read this article to get the scoop on this common illness. What Is It?
Strep throat
is a disease caused by tiny egg-shaped bacteria (say: back- teer -ee-uh) called Group A streptococci (say: strep-toe- cock -eye). These bacteria cause 10% of all sore throats and are found in your throat and on your skin. Some people, called carriers , carry streptococci around in their throats, even when they aren't sick. If you have been around someone who has strep throat and you start to feel bad, you should see your doctor. When strep throat is not treated, it can affect other parts of the body, causing arthritis (say: are- threye -tiss) or heart problems from a disease called rheumatic (say: roo- mah -tick) fever.

Parents Infections
Signs and Symptoms Approximately 15% of children who have a sore throat and fever are infected by Group A streptococci. When Group A streptococci infect the throat, they cause pharyngitis, which is a painful inflammation of the throat (pharynx). Swallowing may become so painful that the child has difficulty eating. A child with strep pharyngitis often has a fever above 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38.3 degrees Celsius), with chills, body aches and loss of appetite. There also may be abdominal symptoms, like nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The tonsils and the back of the throat may look red, swollen, and dotted with whitish or yellowish specks of pus. There may be swollen glands in the neck and at the angles of the jaw. Strangely, in spite of all the throat pain, hoarseness and loss of voice are not common. Some rare cases of strep infection may result in the production of a toxin that causes a bright red skin rash. This is the rash of " scarlet fever ," and it usually lasts from the second to the sixth day of the strep throat infection. In infants, strep throat infections - although rare unless infants are in child care - tend to cause symptoms that seem less limited to the throat. Infants may have a runny nose, crusting and sores around the nostrils and a low fever. They may also begin to feed poorly.

About one in 10. The first place to look for clues is inside your child's mouth. Are his tonsils swollen, bright red, flecked with white? These are the clearest and most common signatures of infection by the streptococcus bacteria. A fever above 101 degrees F, chills, and a noticeable swelling and soreness of the glands in the neck just under the jaw are also warning signs. A bad cold or the flu can cause such symptoms, too, and they often show up at the same time of year, between October and April. But a strep throat usually lasts longer than a plain old sore one. If it looks bad in there, and lasts for more than a couple of days, call a doctor. Does my child need to see a doctor right away?

  • Although strep throat is most common in school-aged children and teens, adults may also get this disease. Strep throat is more widespread during the school year when a large number of students are present in an enclosed space, laughing, yelling, sneezing, and coughing. The bacteria are present in the nose and throat, so normal activities such as sneezing, coughing, or shaking hands can spread the infection to other people.

    Strep throat
    Definition
Streptococcal sore throat , or strep throat as it is more commonly called, is an infection of the mucous membranes lining the pharynx. Sometimes the tonsils are also infected ( tonsillitis ). The disease is caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria. Untreated strep throat may develop into rheumatic fever or other serious conditions.
    Description
Strep throat accounts for between 5-10% of all sore throats. Although anyone can get strep throat, it is most common in school-age children. People who smoke, who are fatigued, run down, or who live in damp, crowded conditions are also more likely to become infected. Children under age two and adults who are not around children are less likely to get the disease. Strep throat occurs most frequently from November to April. The disease passes directly from person to person by coughing, sneezing, and close contact. Very occasionally the disease is passed through food, when a food handler infected with strep throat accidentally contaminates food by coughing or sneezing. Statistically, if someone in the household is infected, one out of every four other household members may get strep throat within two to seven days.
    Causes and symptoms

Watch Your Strep! A sore throat can be either an annoying ailment from allergies or a virus, or the symptom of another illness. Strep throat is a contagious disease caused by an infection with Group A Streptococcus (pronounced: strep-toe-kock-cus) bacteria. While anyone can get strep throat, it is most commonly seen in children between the ages of 5 and 16 . It is important that you go to a health care provider if you suspect strep, because if left untreated streptococcal throat infections can lead to rheumatic fever and kidney disease. The symptoms of strep throat vary from person to person. The most common findings include a swollen bright red throat, with dark red spots on the back of the throat, a very sore throat, fever [101¹ F (38.3¹ C) to 104¹ - 105¹ F (40¹ C)], and tender swollen lymph nodes under the jaw. Usually the tonsils are red and enlarged. You may also have white pus on your tonsils or your tonsils may be covered with a gray or white coating. It is not uncommon to have a headache, generalized aches and pains, and nausea. The nasal congestion and runny nose associated with the common cold

[Reprinted from HOOFBEATS: THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF STREPTOCOCCAL INFECTIONS, v. 911, May 1993] Introduction Against the disease of writing one must take special precautions,
since it is a dangerous and contagious disease. (1 ) Once more, against our better judgment, we have succumbed to the disease of writing, and are thus compelled to report our latest findings on a matter of great importance to public health. Our previous research(2) dealt with cases of recurrent canine-transmitted streptococcal pharyngitis.(3) We now turn our attention to a largely undocumented phenomenon: the apparent relationship between strep throat and eating in Italian restaurants. We describe the case of an 8 year-old child. On at least three occasions, the patient became ill with strep throat within hours of eating at a neighborhood Italian restaurant. His family frequently went out to dinner on Saturday nights, always returning home in time to watch their favorite programs on TV, including COPS, CODE 3, The X-Files, and Alien Autopsy.

Like colds, the vast majority of sore throats are caused by viral infections. This means most sore throats will NOT respond to antibiotics. Many people have a mild sore throat at the beginning of every cold. When the nose or sinuses become infected, drainage can run down the back of the throat and irritate it, especially at night. Or, the throat itself can be infected. Some viruses can cause specific types of sore throat. For example, Coxsackievirus sometimes causes blisters in the throat, especially in the late summer and early fall. Mono and the flu can also cause specific viral throat infections.
