Frequently Asked Questions about strabismus. Q What is strabismus? Q When strabismus is present, will the eyes always look misaligned?
http://www.preventblindness.org/children/StrabismusFAQ.html
Frequently Asked Questions about Strabismus
Q: What is strabismus?
Strabismus is a deviation of the eyes. The term is used to describe eyes that are not straight or properly aligned.
Q: What causes the misalignment?
The misalignment results from the failure of the eye muscles to work together. One eye, or sometimes both, may turn in (crossed eyes), turn out (wall eyes), turn up or turn down. Sometimes more than one of the 'turns' are present.
Q: When strabismus is present, will the eyes always look misaligned?
The deviation may be constant or it may come and go. In young children strabismus may vary not only from day-to-day, but during the course of a day.
Q: My infant's eyes roll all over. Should I be concerned?
At birth, an infant's eyes cannot always focus directly on objects. They may appear to move quite independently at first, sometimes crossing, and sometimes wandering outward. But by the age of three to four months, an infant's eyes should have the ability to focus on small objects and the eyes should be straight or parallel. A six-month-old infant should be able to focus on both distant and near objects.
Q: What should I do if I notice wandering eyes in my four-month-old child?

Strabismus
(Crossed or turned eye)
Overview Strabismus is a problem caused by one or more improperly functioning eye muscles , resulting in a misalignment of the eyes. Normally, each eye focuses on the same spot but sends a slightly different message to the brain. The brain superimposes the two images, giving vision depth and dimension. Here's an easy way to see how the eyes work together: hold your finger at arm's length. While looking at your finger, close one eye, then the other. Notice how your finger changes position. Even though the images are slightly different, the brain interprets them as one. Each eye has six muscles that work in unison to control movements. The brain controls the eye muscles, which keep the eyes properly aligned. It is critical that the muscles function together for the brain to interpret the image from each eye as a single one.

Strabismus
By Judith Lee and Gretchyn Bailey
reviewed by Dr. Vance Thompson Strabismus is a condition where your eyes don't look toward the same object together. One eye moves normally, while the other points in (esotropia or "crossed eyes"), out (exotropia), up (hypertropia) or down (hypotropia). Strabismus can lead to amblyopia . Strabismus is the physical disorder, and amblyopia is the visual consequence.
Strabismus Symptoms and Signs
Newborns often appear to have crossed eyes due to a lack of developed vision, but this disappears as the infant grows. True strabismus does not disappear as the child grows. Visit your eyecare practitioner if you're unsure if your child is demonstrating true strabismus. The earlier the diagnosis and treatment, the better the visual results.

by Dr. Jeffrey Cooper What is Amblyopia (lazy eye)?
Amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye, is the eye condition noted by reduced vision not correctable by glasses or contact lenses and is not due to any eye disease. The brain, for some reason, does not fully acknowledge the images seen by the amblyopic eye. This almost always affects only one eye but may manifest with reduction of vision in both eyes. It is estimated that three percent of children under six have some form of amblyopia. Lazy Eye and Strabismus are not the same condition.
Many people make the mistake of saying that a person who has strabismus has a "lazy eye," but amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus are not the same condition. Some of the confusion may be due to the fact that strabismus can cause amblyopia. Amblyopia can result from a constant unilateral strabismus (i.e., either the right or left eye turns all of the time). Alternating or intermittent strabismus (an eye turn which occurs only some of the time) rarely causes amblyopia While a deviating eye (strabismus) may be easily spotted by the layman, amblyopia without strabismus or associated with a small deviation usually can be not noticed by either you or your pediatrician. Only an eye doctor comfortable in examining young children and infants can detect this type of amblyopia.
