If you or a friend or relative have been diagnosed with cancer, you will find much more detailed information on our patient information site, CancerHelp UK Summary Stomach cancer is the 5th most common cancer for men and the 9th most common cancer for women in the UK. Each year, there are nearly 6,300 new cases of stomach cancer in men and nearly 3,500 cases in women. Stomach cancer develops from cells within the stomach. More than 9 in 10 stomach cancers affect the cells of the inner lining of the stomach. Stomach cancer can spread to nearby organs in the abdomen, or, through the wall of the stomach, to distant organs and lymph nodes. Risk factors
  • Helicobacter pylori infection
Helicobacter pylori infection is a common bacterial infection of the stomach lining. It is strongly linked to stomach ulcers and research has shown that people with the infection are 4 to 5 times more likely to develop stomach cancer than those without it.
    Diet
Eating lots of salted, cured and smoked foods may increase the risk of stomach cancer. Research also suggests that eating plenty of fibre, fruit, vegetables and antioxidant vitamins may help protect against the cancer.

Researchers are uncertain whether the bacteria lowers blood levels of vitamin C or if high blood levels of vitamin C protect against infection. They suggest that either way high levels of vitamin C may prevent peptic ulcers, which are sores in the lining of the stomach or upper portion of the small intestine, and stomach cancer. Study participants with the highest blood levels of vitamin C had a 25 percent lower prevalence of infection with H. pylori. Researchers suggest that Americans increase their consumption of vitamin C-rich foods to help prevent or lessen the severity of infection with H. pylori.

You are in: Cancer and Tumors Stomach Cancer Introduction Your stomach is a muscular bag with a capacity of about 1 liter or quart. It lies along your digestive tract between your esophagus and your small intestine. Your stomach serves as a reservoir for food you eat during meals and begins the process of digestion. Its inner walls are composed of glands that secrete acid as well as digestive enzymes. The most common form of cancer affecting the stomach is adenocarcinoma , which arises in the glands of the innermost layer of the stomach. This tumor tends to spread through the wall of the stomach and from there into the adjoining organs (pancreas and spleen) and lymph nodes. It can spread through the bloodstream and lymph system to distant organs (metastasize).

To Learn More About This Topic: Chat with Us Email Us The National Cancer Institute states that each year, about 24,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with cancer of the stomach. The stomach cancer rate in the United States and the number of deaths from this disease have gone down dramatically over the past 60 years. Researchers have learned that some people are more likely than others to develop stomach cancer. The disease is found most often in people over age 55. It affects men twice as often as women, and is more common in African Americans than in Caucasians. Also, stomach cancer is more common in some parts of the worldsuch as Japan, Korea, parts of Eastern Europe, and Latin Americathan in the United States. People in these areas eat many foods that are preserved by drying, smoking, salting, or pickling. Scientists believe that eating foods preserved in these ways may play a role in the development of stomach cancer. On the other hand, fresh foods (especially fresh fruits and vegetables and properly frozen or refrigerated fresh foods) may protect against this disease. Stomach ulcers do not appear to increase a person's risk of developing stomach cancer. However, some studies suggest that a type of bacteria, Helicobacter pylori, which may cause stomach inflammation and ulcers, may be an important risk factor for this disease. Also, research shows that people who have had stomach surgery or have pernicious anemia, achlorhydria, or gastric atrophy (which generally result in lower than normal amounts of digestive juices) have an increased risk of stomach cancer.

Stomach Cancer Facts
24,000 people are diagnosed with stomach cancer each year in the United States. According to the National Cancer Institute, the rate of stomach cancer occurrences in the United States has decreased over the last 60 years. The number of stomach cancer deaths has also fallen in the U.S. over the same period of the time.
Stomach Cancer Diagnosis Tests
Several tests are used in stomach cancer diagnosis . One test used to diagnose stomach cancer is an upper gastrointestinal tract x-ray. This stomach cancer diagnostic test is sometimes called an upper GI x-ray. In this stomach cancer test, the patient drinks a barium solution. The barium is used to outline the stomach on the x-rays. This stomach cancer test can also help the doctor find other tumors or abnormal areas. Another stomach cancer diagnostic test is called a fecal occult blood test. This test is use to check for blood in the stool which can be a symptom of stomach cancer. Having blood in the stool does not necessarily mean that you have stomach cancer.

How to help prevent stomach cancer
Who's at risk? Each year about 24,000 people in the United States learn they have cancer of the stomach. Stomach cancer, also called gastric cancer, is the fourth most common cancer today, although it is not nearly as common in this country as it was 60 years ago. Dietary changes and the greater use of refrigeration for food storage are credited for the lower incidence of stomach cancer. Scientists don't know why some people develop stomach cancer and others don't. But they do know that some people are more likely than others to develop it. For instance, stomach cancer occurs mostly in men older than 40 and is more likely to occur in black people than in white people. There are other factors that can increase the risk of getting stomach cancer: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) . Some studies suggest that a type of bacteria, Helicobacter pylori, which lives in the stomach lining, is a major cause of stomach cancer. It is found in 20 percent of people age 40 and younger and 50 percent of those who are 60 or older. H. pylori bacteria often cause peptic ulcers. However, stomach ulcers do not appear to raise a person's risk of developing stomach cancer. People with H. pylori infection have three to eight times greater risk of developing gastric cancer than those not infected, although most never develop stomach cancer. Diet . A diet high in preserved foods - such as those that are smoked, dried, salted or pickled - that contain nitrates and nitrites are linked to stomach cancer. These substances can be converted inside your stomach into compounds that increase your risk of stomach cancer. Researchers have also found people who have diets rich in meat, cheese and whole milk may be at increased risk of developing cancer in both the esophagus and stomach.

Stomach Cancer Stomach cancer in the United States is the seventh most common cause of death from cancer. About 95 percent of all stomach cancer is gastric adenocarcinoma. Other, less common forms are lymphomas and leiomyosarcomas. Adenocarcinoma is classified by how it looks:
  • A pouch that juts out, like a polyp (A patient with this type of tumor has a better chance of survival than if the tumor is penetrating.) A sharp, well-defined border that may be ulcerated Spreading, which spreads across the surface of the lining of the stomach or into its walls Miscellaneous, which means the tumor shows chracteristics of two of the other types (Most fall into this category.)
Symptoms In its early stage, stomach cancer has no specific symptoms. Both doctors and patients tend to dismiss any symptoms, often for months. Clues to the presence of stomach cancer include:
  • Feeling full after a large meal, which is more likely if the cancer is blocking the region where the stomach empties into the intestines Pain, which may suggest peptic ulcer

Stomach cancer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
In medicine stomach cancer (also called gastric cancer ) can develop in any part of the stomach and may spread throughout the stomach and to other organs. The cancer may grow along the stomach wall into the esophagus or small intestine It also may extend through the stomach wall and spread to nearby lymph nodes and to organs such as the liver pancreas , and colon . Stomach cancer also may spread to distant organs, such as the lungs , the lymph nodes above the collar bone, and the ovaries
When cancer spreads to another part of the body, the new tumor has the same kind of abnormal cells and the same name as the primary tumor. For example, if stomach cancer spreads to the liver, the cancer cells in the liver are stomach cancer cells and the disease is metastatic stomach cancer, not liver cancer A well known complication of stomach cancer is when it spreads to an ovary ; the tumor in the ovary is called a Krukenberg tumor . This tumor, named for the doctor who first described it, is not a different disease; it is metastatic stomach cancer - the cancer cells in a Krukenberg tumor are stomach cancer cells, the same as the cancer cells in the primary tumor. What is stomach cancer?
Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is cancer that starts in any part of the stomach. The stomach is just one of many organs located in the abdomen, the area of the body between the chest and the pelvis. Among other organs found in the abdomen are the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and colon. It is important to differentiate among these organs, because cancers and other diseases that affect them present different symptoms and are treated differently. The American Cancer Society estimates that 21,700 Americans (13,400 men and 8,300 women) will be diagnosed with stomach cancer during 2001. Most people diagnosed with stomach cancer are in their 60s and 70s. What causes stomach cancer?
The exact cause of stomach cancer is not known, although there are many risk factors believed to contribute to cells in the stomach becoming cancerous. What are the risk factors for stomach cancer?
