Yasser Arafat's gaunt, fragile appearance during last weekend's inauguration of an emergency cabinet for the Palestinian Authority has raised a flurry of speculation over the state of the 74-year-old leader's health. Palestinian officials on Wednesday denied rumors that Arafat had last week suffered a mild heart attack and explained that Arafat has been suffering from a bad case of the flu or an intestinal infection. But according to a source inside the compound, the recent working diagnosis is that Arafat is suffering from stomach cancer. Al-Jazeera TV reported Wednesday that two teams of doctors, one from Jordan and the other from Egypt, arrived in Ramallah Wednesday to treat Arafat. Abu Dhabi TV reported on Thursday that following their examination of the Palestinian leader, the Egyptian doctors "expressed concern" about the state of his health. Neither report specified his condition. March 25, 2002

Stomach cancer, also called gastric cancer, is the growth of abnormal cells in the lining and wall of the stomach. It occurs mainly in men over 40 years of age. Stomach cancer is difficult to detect in its early stages because it causes few or no symptoms. How does it occur? Several conditions may be precancerous and may increase the risk of stomach cancer. They include:
  • atrophic gastritis, chronic gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), and infection by a certain type of bacteria pernicious anemia: a chronic vitamin-B12 deficiency anemia that occurs in older adults characterized by numbness and tingling in the extremities achlorhydria: low levels or absence of hydrochloric acid in gastric juice.

Gleevec approved for rare stomach cancer
Gleevec, which is already approved for treating a type of leukemia, has now been approved to treat a rare stomach cancer. WASHINGTON (CNN) The Food and Drug Administration Friday approved the use of a promising anti-leukemia drug for treatment of a relatively rare form of abdominal cancer that is usually fatal, if not caught early. The drug, Gleevec, administered as a pill once a day, is effective in treating both forms of cancer because of its ability to target and kill cancer cells without attacking healthy cells and causing severe side effects. Approved last spring for a common type of adult leukemia, Gleevec can now be used to treat gastrointestinal stromal tumors, or GIST, which affect as many as 5,000 people in the United States each year. Studies have shown it to be as effective in treating chronic cases of GIST as it has been in treating chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Researchers reported 59 percent of patients with advanced-stage GIST went into remission and up to 75 percent showed some type of improvement with limited side effects, such as abdominal bleeding and tissue swelling.

... Treatment Decision Tools Detailed Guide: Stomach Cancer What Is Stomach Cancer? Stomach cancer is a cancer that starts in the stomach. The medical name for stomach cancer is gastric cancer. After food is chewed and swallowed, it enters the esophagus, a tube-shaped organ that carries food through the neck and chest. The esophagus joins the stomach just beneath the diaphragm (the breathing muscle under the lungs). The stomach is a sac-like organ that holds food and begins the digestive process by secreting gastric juice. The food and gastric juice are mixed and then emptied into the first part of the small intestine called the duodenum. The word "stomach" is often used to refer to the area of the body between the chest and the pelvic area. For instance, some patients with diseases of the appendix, small intestine, colon (large intestine), or stomach may say they have a "stomachache." The medical term for this area is the abdomen. And, doctors would refer to this symptom as "abdominal pain." This point is important in considering gastrointestinal cancers. The stomach is only one of many organs in the abdomen in which cancers may develop. It is important not to confuse stomach cancer with cancers of the colon (large intestine), liver, pancreas, or small intestine because these cancers may have different symptoms, a different prognosis (the outlook for chances of survival), and different treatments.

Leukemia pill shows promise against stomach cancer
Gleevec, which was just approved for treating leukemia, also shows promise against a type of stomach cancer From Rhonda Rowland CNN Medical Correspondent (CNN) Last fall, 41-year-old Marina Symcox gave up on cancer treatment and began preparing for her funeral. At 38, Symcox had been diagnosed with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor, or GIST a type of stomach cancer that affects as many as 5,000 Americans each year. "I had absolutely been given no hope right from the beginning," she said. Until recently, there was no effective treatment for GIST. But researchers reported Sunday that a new cancer pill approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a common type of adult leukemia showed encouraging results when used on stomach cancers like those Symcox had. The pill was approved for use against leukemia last week and has been hailed as a major breakthrough. It is taken once a day and causes virtually no side effects.

... Treatment Decision Tools Detailed Guide: Stomach Cancer How Is Stomach Cancer Treated? No matter what stage of stomach cancer you have, treatment is available. The choice of treatment you receive depends on many factors. The location and the stage (extent of spread) of the tumor are very important. In creating your treatment plan, you and your cancer care team will also take your age, general state of health, and personal preferences into account. The main treatments for stomach cancer are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Often the best approach uses 2 or more of these treatment methods. Your recovery is one goal of your cancer care team. If a cure is not possible, treatment is aimed at relieving symptoms, such as trouble eating, pain, or bleeding. It is important that you understand the goal of your treatment, whether to cure your cancer or to relieve symptoms, before starting treatment. If the goal of your treatment is a cure, you can also receive treatment to relieve symptoms and side effects. Stomach Cancer
What is the stomach?
The stomach is part of the digestive system. It is located in the upper abdomen, under the ribs. The upper part of the stomach connects to the esophagus, and the lower part leads into the small intestine. When food enters the stomach, muscles in the stomach wall create a rippling motion that mixes and mashes the food. This motion is called peristalsis. At the same time, juices made by glands in the lining of the stomach help digest the food. After about 3 hours, the food becomes a liquid and moves into the small intestine, where digestion continues. What is cancer, and how does stomach cancer spread?
Cancer is a group of more than 100 different diseases. They affect the body's basic unit, the cell. Cancer occurs when cells become abnormal and divide without control or order. Like all other organs of the body, the stomach is made up of many types of cells. Normally, cells divide to produce more cells only when the body needs them. This orderly process helps keep us healthy.

Stomach Cancer
The Stomach
After food has been swallowed it passes down the gullet and enters the stomach. The stomach wall produces fluid and acid to soften the food and begin digestion. The stomach churns and mixes the food until it is suitable to be passed into the intestine where it will be further digested and absorbed into the blood stream. In order to carry out its job the stomach has an outer muscle wall to enable it to churn the food and pass it into the intestine. It also has an internal lining which secretes the acid, fluid and other chemicals that are added to the food. The activity of the stomach is controlled by nerves and chemicals that are triggered by the sight or smell of food, the act of eating, stretching of the stomach and the presence of food within it. How does cancer arise? Stomach cancer arises from changes in the internal lining of the stomach, the part that is responsible for secreting the acid, fluid and other chemicals. This layer is complicated because as well as having to secrete, it must also protect itself from the acid that it produces, this would otherwise damage the lining and cause an ulcer. The surface is lined with numerous delicate little cells. These are specialized and live for only a few days, after which they drop off into the inside of the stomach. They are replaced by new cells that are generated deep in the lining. The formation and death of the lining cells of the stomach is kept under close control by the body. Each cell develops for its special function and has to link with the other cells close by to form a team which will either secrete acid, protect from acid, secrete other chemicals or act as hormone cells.

Should I Get A Second Opinion?
Treatment decisions are complex. Sometimes, it is helpful for patients to have a second opinion about the diagnosis and the treatment plan. (Some insurance companies require a second opinion; others may pay for a second opinion if the patient requests it.) There are several ways to find another physician to consult: The patient's physician may be able to suggest a specialist. Specialists who treat this disease include gastroenterologists, surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. The Cancer Information Service, at 1-800-4-CANCER, can tell callers about treatment facilities, including cancer centers and other programs supported by the National Cancer Institute. Patients can get the names of physicians from a local medical society, a nearby hospital, or a medical school.
