Stomach cancer, has become relatively uncommon in the United States, it is the most prevalent visceral cancer (second for men, fourth for women). Nevertheless, death rates have been declining since the 1930s to become only about 35% of what they were at that time. The decrease has been worldwide and for unexplained reasons. It remains the most prevalent carcinoma in East Asia, with the rate in Japan being more than seven times that in the United States, accounting for one-third of all cancer deaths on those islands.
The repetitive ingestion of high concentrations of salt irritates the stomach lining, and this has been proposed as a potential cause of gastric cancer. In fact, the decline in the incidence of this disease has been correlated with the decline in the salt preservation of foods. In regions in which stomach cancer remains common, such as Japan, salted seafood has remained a dietary staple. The incidence of gastric cancer among first-generation immigrants from Japan to the West is similar to that in their communities of origin, but it declines to the incidence of the Western community in which the next generation resides.
This suggests that the neoplastic process begins irreversibly during childhood, regardless of relocation or dietary changes after a certain age. Because this is not a genetically determined disease, a generation that has not been exposed to the inducing irritant of salt at a critical age presumably will not suffer inordinately from this neoplasm.

Each year, millions ofAmericans are diagnosed with digestive disorders, ranging from the occasional upset stomach to the more life-threatening colorectal cancer. They encompass disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Consider the following:
  • Sixty to 70 million persons are affected by all digestive diseases.
Thirteen percent of all hospitalizations are for digestive disorders.
Digestive disorders account for 50 million physician office visits per year.
Digestive disorders cost $107 billion - $87 billion in direct medical costs and $20 billion in indirect costs each year.
Most digestive diseases are very complex, with subtle symptoms, and the causes of many remain unknown. They may be inherited, or develop from multiple factors such as stress, fatigue, diet, or smoking. Abusing alcohol imposes the greatest risk for digestive diseases. Reaching a diagnosis requires a thorough and accurate medical history and physical examination. Some patients may need to undergo more extensive diagnostic evaluations, including laboratory tests, endoscopic procedures, and imaging techniques. Physicians who specialize in the treatment of digestive problems are called gastroenterologists.

STOMACH CANCER
How and Where does the Stomach Work?
The stomach is an expandable sack located mostly under the left lung, between the muscular "diaphragm" which pushes up the lung, and the coiled small intestine. The stomach is close-by important organs in the abdomen. To it's right is the liver , to it's lower left is the spleen , and underneath it is the pancreas . The esophagus enters the stomach at the "gastro-esophageal" junction, while the small intestine exits it at the lowermost "antrum" . The front of the stomach rests on the abdominal wall, and lower parts of it also contact the upper left kidney and "transverse" colon. You can see that the stomach is in the midst of many vital organs, and infections or cancers can spread to these organs. Important areas of the stomach itself (besides the antrum and gastro-esophageal junction) are the "greater curvature" (basically the left wall of the stomach), the "lesser curvature" (the right wall), the "fundus"

What Is Stomach Cancer?
Cancer occurs when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. There are many kinds of cancer and they all come about because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells. Different types of cancer behave very differently. Lung cancer, breast cancer vaginal cancer , and liver cancer are very different diseases. The diseases grow at different rates and respond to different treatments. People with cancer need treatment that is aimed at their kind of cancer. Stomach cancer, also called gastric cancer starts in the stomach. The stomach is divided into five different layers. Cancer can develop in any of these sections. To view the stomach, click here The stomach is composed of five layers. Starting from the inside and working our way out, the innermost layer is called the mucosa . Stomach acid and digestive juices are made in the mucosa layer. The next layer is called the submucosa . The submucosa is surrounded by the muscularis , a layer of muscle that moves and mixes the stomach contents. The next two layers, the

What is stomach cancer?
Most cancers in the stomach (A) used to appear close to the small bowel (B), but are now often found close to the oesphagus (C). Stomach cancer is the result of cell changes in the lining of the stomach. In Western Europe, stomach cancer is only about one third as common as it was 50 years ago.
The location of the tumours within the stomach has also changed. It used to be that most of the tumours were located near where the stomach joins the small bowel, now the commonest site is close to the junction with the oesophagus (gullet).
Stomach cancer is very common in Japan and the Japanese have developed an intensive and effective approach to screening for stomach cancer.

What Is Stomach Cancer?
Each year, about 24,000 people in the United States learn that they have cancer of the stomach. Stomach cancer (also called gastric cancer) can develop in any part of the stomach and may spread throughout the stomach and to other organs. The cancer may grow along the stomach wall into the esophagus or small intestine. Stomach cancer also may extend through the stomach wall and spread to nearby lymph nodes and to organs such as the liver, pancreas, and colon. The cancer also may spread to distant organs, such as the lungs, the lymph nodes above the collar bone, and the ovaries. The stomach cancer rate in the United States and the number of deaths from this disease have gone down dramatically over the past 60 years. Still, stomach cancer is a serious disease, and scientists all over the world are trying to learn more about what causes this disease and how to prevent it. Click here for information about risk factors of stomach cancer.

The most common type is called adenocarcinoma, which refers to the way the cancer looks under the microscope. There are several types of adenocarcinoma. Other types of gastric cancer occur much less frequently so this article is focused on adenocarcinoma of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma of the stomach is a common cancer of the digestive tract worldwide, although it is relatively uncommon in the US. It occurs most frequently in men over 40 years old. The incidence of this form of gastric cancer is extremely high in Japan, Chile, and Iceland. The incidence of most types of gastric adenocarcinoma in the US has declined over the years. Experts propose that the decrease may be related to reduced intake of salted, cured, and smoked foods and increased vitamin C consumption.
