Endocrine glands Pelvic laparoscopy Female reproductive anatomy Stein-Leventhal syndrome ... Follicle development Definition: Stein-Leventhal syndrome is an accumulation of many incompletely developed follicles in the ovaries. This condition is characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, scanty or absent menses , multiple small cysts on the ovaries (polycystic ovaries), mild hirsutism (excessive hair), and infertility . Many women who have this condition also have diabetes with insulin resistance. Alternative Names: Polycystic ovaries; Sclerocystic ovarian disease; Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Abnormal ovarian function sometimes causes incompletely-developed follicles (ova) to accumulate in the ovaries. These ova fail to mature and be released from the ovaries. The ova accumulate as cysts in the ovary, contributing to infertility. Polycystic ovaries are two to five times larger than normal ovaries, and they have a white, thick, tough outer covering. This condition is commonly called Stein-Leventhal syndrome, and usually develops shortly after puberty.

Polycystic ovary syndrome
Definition
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition characterized by the accumulation of numerous cysts (fluid-filled sacs) on the ovaries associated with high male hormone levels, chronic anovulation (absent ovulation), and other metabolic disturbances. Classic symptoms include excess facial and body hair, acne obesity , irregular menstrual cycles, and infertility Description
PCOS, also called Stein-Leventhal syndrome, is a group of symptoms caused by underlying hormonal and metabolic disturbances that affects about 6% of premenopausal women. PCOS symptoms appear as early as adolescence in the form of amenorrhea (missed periods), obesity, and hirsutism , the abnormal growth of body hair. A disturbance in normal hormonal signals prevents ovulation in women with PCOS. Throughout the cycle, estrogen levels remain steady, LH levels are high, and FSH and progesterone levels are low. Since eggs are rarely or never released from their follicles, multiple ovarian cysts develop over time.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Stein-Leventhal Syndrome)
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which is believed to be an inherited disorder, affects up to 20 percent of reproductive-aged women. It is the number one cause of infertility, and evidence suggests that it can increase the risk of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and cancer later in life. Occurrence usually takes place at the onset of puberty, but it can appear in women who are in the middle of their reproductive years as well.
Symptoms Some characteristic features of PCOS include Polycystic ovaries (as detected by pelvic ultrasonography Infertility, particularly anovulatory infertility Hyperandrogenism, the ovary being the main source of excess androgens Hirsutism Acne Alopecia Menstrual disturbances Insulin resistance Obesity, especially high waist/hip ratio and body mass index ( BMI
Treatment
PCOS should not be confused with benign idiopathic hirsutism, in which hormone levels are normal and ovaries are not polycystic. Likewise, PCO-like individuals who have nonactive ovarian cysts, which do not influence hormone levels, should not be categorized as PCOS patients. These individuals have normal hormone profiles and are not hirsute.

She said she wanted to check Cecily for a condition called polycystic (pronounced: pah-lee- sis -tik) ovary sydrome (PCOS) What Is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome?
You can't see them, hear them, or feel them, but the hormones that regulate a girl's reproductive system make themselves known in many ways - they are responsible for her periods, breast development, and other aspects of becoming a woman. Both girls and guys produce hormones called androgens (pronounced: an -druh-junz), which play a role in sexual function. Although androgens are sometimes referred to as male hormones, every female produces them, too. In girls with PCOS, the ovaries produce higher than normal amounts of androgens, and this can interfere with egg development and release. Some of the eggs develop into

General Discussion
Asherman's Syndrome is a gynecological disorder in which affected females experience a gradual decrease in menstrual flow, increased cramping and abdominal pain, eventual cessation of menstrual cycles (amenorrhea), and infertility. In females with the disorder, such symptoms and findings occur due to inflammation of the lining of the uterus (endometritis) and the development of bands of scar tissue abnormally joining portions of the uterus (intrauterine adhesions and synechiae). Endometrial scarring and intrauterine adhesions may occur due to surgical scraping or cleaning of tissue from the uterine wall (dilatation and curettage [D and C]), infections of the endometrium (e.g., tuberculosis), or other factors.

hirsutism table Home Forums Privacy Advertising ... Home On this page... Introduction The table below records disorders known to involve excess hair growth due to hormonal influence (hirsutism). The clinical distinction between hirsutism and hypertrichosis is that hirsutism involves hair growth in a secondary sexual characteristic pattern. For example, women with pigmented terminal hair growth in the beard, mustache, chest, and escutcheon areas have hirsutism and not hypertrichosis. Hirsutism typically involves endocrine dysfunction (abnormal hormone levels). This is not necessarily a complete list of disorders involving hirsutism. Links to relevant web pages on the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) web database are also given where possible. Where a disorder is known by more than one name, alternative names are given in the second column and the record duplicated in the first column under each respective name. Brackets around alternative disorder names indicate an indirect association, for example a subcategory of the disorder. These records are not duplicated in the first column.

yes no Polycystic Ovary syndrome: Polycystic Ovarian disease: PCOS: Stein-Leventhal syndrome Polycystic Ovary syndrome is a condition in which women with polycystic ovaries also have one or more additional symptoms. It was first "discovered" in 1935 by Doctors Stein and Leventhal and for many years was known as the Stein-Leventhal syndrome. Polycystic ovaries are common affecting 20-30 per cent of women and PCOS affects about 10 -15 per cent. The ovaries are a pair of female reproductive organs that produce eggs and female sex hormones. In individuals affected by PCOS hormonal inbalances in the production of oestrogens, progesterones and androgens lead to the presence of many small cysts in the ovaries. The cysts, usually no bigger than 8 millimetres each, are egg-containing follicles that have not developed properly and are arranged just below the surface of the ovaries. The symptoms of PCOS can include:
  • irregular periods, or a lack of periods altogether
