A fascinating early employee of the Smithsonian Institution was Tichkematse (Squint Eyes), a Cheyenne Indian who worked for the institution in a variety of capacities between 1879 and 1881. Raised to a life based on buffalo hunting, Tichkematse was among a group of southern Plains warriors who were held as prisoners of war by the United States government from 1875-1878. While imprisoned, he learned to speak English and to read and write. Upon release he attended school at the Hampton Institute in Virginia for about a year before coming to the Smithsonian. There he was trained in the preparation of bird and mammal specimens for study and display. He proved so able a naturalist that he was detailed to accompany a government expedition traveling the remote Florida waterways to counsel with members of the Seminole tribe. Tichkematse used this opportunity to collect bird specimens for the museum.
Tichkematse also shared knowledge of his own culture with the Smithsonian staff and visiting public. When he was not busy guiding visitors through the galleries and interpreting the Indian exhibits, he worked with anthropologist

ictorial art is an old tradition among the Indians of the Plains. Long ago men painted pictures of their triumphs on buffalo robes and hide shirts. Once non-native trade materials became available in the 19th century, many drawings were done on paper, often in bound books such as account ledgers or ruled notebooks. One of the best known groups of Plains artists was among the men held prisoner at Fort Marion in Saint Augustine, Florida, from 1875-1878. Working far away from home, they developed a distinctive style quite different than that of the many artists who remained in their home communities. Squint Eyes (Tichkematse), a Cheyenne, was one of these prisoner artists.
Once the Fort Marion prisoners returned
to their homes in Indian Territory (now western Oklahoma) their art production almost ceased. Squint Eyes' drawings are one of only two sets of drawings known to have been produced by the prisoners after their return home (until decades later when a few artists created drawings for anthropologist James Mooney). Produced between 1886 and 1887 at Fort Supply, Oklahoma, Squint Eyes' drawings form an important chapter in the story of Plains Indian pictorial art. They provide a valuable insider perspective on Plains Indian life, as well as an unexpected view of Indian-Army interactions.

…when you're an overweight child, in a society that demands perfection, your sense of right and wrong will always be tragically skewed... - Fat Bastard, “ Goldmember I don’t know about the difference between right and wrong, but I do know that my perception of myself in terms of body image has been a mess since my early teens. The thing is, I’m really not sure whether it’s my fault or the unavoidable result of growing up in this part of the world. I’m certainly ready to accept any blame, but a random conversation with a psychiatrist at a meeting a few months ago leads me to be open to the possibility that I’m being a tad hard on myself. We all have this critical inner voice, see, and the volume gets higher or lower, the criticism ebbs and flows depending on how much we let it . My problem just might be that little sucker. If left to my own devices, I can find the joy in almost any situation. I gravitate to the most interesting person in the room, I find the coolest toy or I wind up in someone’s kitchen refilling the punch or the coffee maker so no one gets parched. It’s usually only when I catch sight of myself in a reflective surface (it could be anything: a wine glass, a toaster, a goddamn serving spoon) that I am reminded of what I look like and what sort of image I’m projecting to the world. It’s a bummer every single time. Now, that’s what happens in the moment. If I look at a picture snapped at said event, as long as it’s five or more years old, I’ll see myself with a very different set of eyes. Kinder, more considerate eyes. Eyes that say well, I didn’t look

A-Z Children's Ailments
Eye squint by Dr Trisha Macnair What is it? Symptoms Further help What is it? When a child’s eyes don’t both look in exactly the same direction they are said to have a squint (also known as strabismus). There are several different types of squint depending on the direction followed by the gaze of the affected eye. So there may be a convergent squint (where the abnormal eye gazes inwards) or a divergent squint (where the affected eye looks outwards towards the corner of the eye). More rarely there are vertical squints where the eye gazes up or down. What causes it? Squints are caused by difficulty in focusing, and are a result of what are known as refractive errors, such long-sightedness. These refractive errors may occur in one or both eyes, which interferes with the early brain development of binocular vision. In other words, because the eyes focus differently the brain doesn’t learn to use both eyes to focus together on an object. If one eye is dominant the brain may suppress the image from the weaker eye and control of that eye may be poor. Genetic factors may be important and often there is a family history of squint or visual problems. Much more rarely a paralytic squint may develop, due to damage to the nerves controlling movement of the eyes, for example by a brain tumour.

squint. Also known as “strabismus”, squint is a condition where the eyes are not aligned in the same direction. What causes squint?
http://sdhawan.com/Squint.htm
Squint
Also known as “strabismus”, squint is a condition where the eyes are not aligned in the same direction. The squinting eye may turn in (converge), turn out (diverge) or sometimes turn up or down. These can be present all or only part of the time, in one or alternating between two eyes.
What causes squint?
It can arise because of an incorrect balance of the muscles that move the eyes ,faulty nerve signals to muscles, refractive errors, childhood illnesses, etc.
Is it only a cosmetic problem?
Squint is not just a cosmetic problem. It is always associated with certain degree of functional defect which make it important to treat squint as early as possible. It can be associated with decreased vision ( amblyopia or lazy eye) or double vision ( diplopia ). Loss of binocular vision (ability to use two eyes together) can lead to loss of fine depth perception ( stereopsis ) and peripheral visual field.
How is squint assessed in your hospital?
It is assessed by various orthoptics tests, the aim of which is to: Establish the amount and type of squint Assess how well can the child /adult see Detect presence of refractive errors ( refraction Test for binocular vision Retina examination including fixation pattern Investigate for the cause of squint
Childhood Squint
Squint can present at any age. The cause is not always known, but if squint is suspected, then the baby should be seen for accurate assessment at the earliest opportunity. Sometimes a “pseudo or false squint” may be present due to wide gap between the eyes , flat nose bridge etc. where the eyes appear to be misaligned but do not actually have squint. Newborn child may have a certain degree of misalignment of the eyes which usually disappears by about 6 months of age but if it persists beyond 6 months then the child should be immediately examined by an eye surgeon.

By David Bancroft April 30, 1998 Here I am sitting approximately two feet from my 15" state of the art monitor, using the medium font size of my browser at 800 x 600 resolution and find myself leaning forward to read many of the commercial web sites that I visit in my travels of the Internet. Is it just me with 40 plus year old eyes who find many commercial sites on the Internet hard to read because of the font size being used? (I won't even discuss those sites that offer contrasting background and font colors that make your eyes water at first glance.) Oh! I know the purpose of using 10pt or smaller font size . . . Reduce the number of vertical scrolls! I sure do not want to scroll down one or two extra times to read something without squinting from the strain of trying to read one or more paragraphs Forget that it may concern the purpose/mission of a site, description of a product or service, or any other pertinent information that is meant for the target audience. Okay! Some experts will tell me to change to a larger browser font size so I can read the copy easier. Sure, I am really going to play musical font size depending on which site I visit next . . . NOT! How many of us really do it anyway?

Squint and Amblyopia: Their Treatment
The evidence is conclusive that squint and Amblyopia, like errors of refraction, are purely functional troubles, and since they are always relieved by the relief of the strain with which they are associated, it follows that any of the methods which promote relaxation and central fixation may be employed for their elimination. As in the case of errors of refraction, the squint disappears and the Amblyopia is corrected just as soon as a person gains enough mental control to remember a perfectly black full stop. in this way both conditions may be temporarily relieved in a few seconds, their permanent eradication being a mere matter of making this temporary state permanent. One of the best ways of gaining mental control in cases of squint is to learn how to increase the squint, or produce other kinds of squint, voluntarily. A case in point is that of a woman who had divergent vertical squint in both eyes. When the left eye was straight the right eye turned out and up, and when the right eye was straight the left eye turned down and out. Both eyes were amblyopic and there was double vision, with the images sometimes on the same side and sometimes on opposite sides. She suffered from headaches and obtained no relief from glasses or other methods of treatment, so she made up her mind to an operation and consulted a surgeon with the idea of having one performed. The surgeon, puzzled to find so many muscles apparently at fault, asked my opinion as to which of them should be operated upon.

Squint and Amblyopia: Their Cause
Since we have two eyes, it is obvious that in the act of sight two pictures must be formed. In order that these two pictures shall be fused into one by the mind, it is necessary that there shall be perfect harmony of action between the two organs of vision. In looking at a distant object the two visual axes must be parallel, and in looking at an object at a distance less than infinity, which for practical purposes is less than twenty feet, they must converge to exactly the same degree. The absence of this harmony of action is known as strabismus, or squint, and is one of the most distressing of eye defects, not only because of the lowering of vision involved but because the lack of symmetry in the most expressive feature of the face which results from it has a most unpleasant effect upon personal appearance. The condition is one which has long baffled ophthalmological science. While the theories about its cause that are advanced in the textbooks seem to fit some cases, they leave others unexplained, and all methods of treatment are admitted to be very uncertain in their results. The idea that a lack of harmony in the movements of the eyes is due to a corresponding lack of harmony in the strength of the muscles that turn them in their sockets seemed such a natural one that this theory was almost universally accepted at one time. Operations-based upon it once had a great vogue, but today they are advised, by most authorities, only as a last resort. It is true that many persons have been benefited by them, but at best the correction of the squint is only approximate', and in many cases the condition has been made worse, while a restoration of binocular vision - the power of fusing the two visual images into one - is scarcely even hoped for.

Strabismus (squint) November 15, 2001 (Reviewed: May 20, 2003) Question When I go outside I have noticed that I squint in one eye. I have always been nearsighted and have one eye that is considered lazy, but that was corrected with eyeglasses. Lately I had to get bifocals. I had some trouble last year with dizziness. Could this be related to my squint?
Answer A squint of one eye in bright light is most commonly due to an exo- (outward) deviation of the eye(s). Exotropia is a type of strabismus characterized by outward turning of the eye or eyes, which is present most of the time. The degree of deviation is usually greater when focusing on distant objects, because focusing on near objects normally results in convergence (inturning) of the eyes. Persons and especially children with exotropia may tend to squint in bright sunlight, unlike children with other types of strabismus. Such people may sometimes benefit from prescription glasses or prisms; however, in most cases, strabismus surgery is required to correct the misalignment. Many ophthalmologists prefer to operate on the outside muscles (i.e. those on the ear side) first, using a weakening procedure (lateral rectus muscle recession). However, the inside muscles (those nearest the nose) may also be treated, using a muscle strengthening procedure (medial rectus muscle resection).
