This misalignment may be constant, being present throughout the day, or it may appear sometimes and the rest of the time the eyes may be straight. It is a common condition among children. It may also occur in adults. What causes squint? The exact cause of squint is not really known. The movement of each eye is controlled by six muscles. Each of these muscle acts along with its counterpart in the other eye to keep both the eyes aligned properly. A loss of coordination between the muscles of the two eyes leads to misalignment. This misalignment may be the same in all directions of gaze, or in some conditions the misalignment may be more in one direction of gaze, e.g., in squint due to nerve palsy. Sometimes a refractive error hypermetropia (long sight) may lead to inward deviation of the eye. Poor vision in an eye because of some other eye disease like cataract, etc. may also cause the eye to deviate. This misalignment may be constantly present, or it may come and go. Sometimes, only one eye may be affected (turning inward, outward or downward) while the other eye is directed straight ahead. Strabismus is a common condition among children. Normal alignment of both eyes during childhood allows the brain to fuse the two pictures into a single 3-dimensional image. Strabismus or abnormal alignment can cause amblyopia or reduced vision. If vision is reduced, the brain of the child will learn to recognise the stronger image and ignore the weaker image of the amblyopic eye. This will eventually cause a loss of depth perception. If strabismus develops in an adult, they will often experience double vision because the brain has been trained to receive images from both eyes. The exact cause of the eye misalignment that leads to strabismus is not fully understood. Six eye muscles control eye movement and are attached to the outside of each eye. Two muscles in each eye move the eye right or left while the other four muscles move it up or down and control tilting movements. SQUINT / STRABISMUS T his is the condition when eyes are not straight or aligned properly. The eyes may go in or out and occasionally up or down. Eye movement Eye movement is controlled by 6 muscles attached to the outside of each eyeball. Eye Muscles In order to see correctly both eyes must move in same direction. This is done by pulling by one muscle in one direction and relaxing of other muscle. To see one object both eyes must look at it at the same time. Each eye sees it from different angle and each eye sends a slightly different picture to the brain (Binocular vision). Brain blends the two picture to give a three dimensional image. This process is known as fusion and it gives the ability to judge the relative distance in two objects (depth perception). If the muscles are not coordinated the images of to eyes send two brain will not fuse and one gets double vision. The child quickly and unconsciously learns to ignore the image of one eye (suppression) and the eye becomes lazy (amblyopic) The development of binocular vision starts at age of 6 months to be completed by age of 5 – 8 years. So the squint treatment should be done in this age.
