SQUINT (STRABISMUS) Normally the two eyes move parallel to each other in all the directions of gaze. Under normal circumstances, when both the eyes have good vision and they are aligned properly, they focus on the same object. Each of the eyes sends picture of the same object, viewed from a slightly different angle. These two images reach the brain, where they are fused to form a single three-dimensional picture with depth perception. This is known as binocular single vision. Six muscles control the movement of each eye. Each of these muscle acts along with its counterpart in the other eye to keep both eyes aligned properly. A loss of coordination between the muscles of the two eyes leads to misalignment. This misalignment may be the same in all directions of gaze, or in some conditions the misalignment may be more in one direction of gaze.
Squint may be Paralytic Squint Means one of the muscle attached to the eyes is paralyzed and the eye affected may turn in/out/up/down depending on the muscle involved i.e. the eye movement is restricted in the direction of the action of the paralyzed muscle. This can be caused by direct trauma to the muscle as for e.g. injury during forceps delivery or any other injury. It may also be caused by certain nerve palsies, which in turn may be caused by peripheral neuritis or diseases of the CNS, e.g. meningitis, encephalitis etc. Treatment of paralytic squint depends on the cause and many a time paralytic squint may not be completely cured. In such cases spectacles with prisms are prescribed.

Time: 30 minutes
Reviewer: Greg Aleknevicus Squint is a party game in the manner of Charades or Pictionary , namely getting a group to guess an object.Whereas in Pictionary you must draw an object, in Squint you use 72 tiles that have generic shapes on them in order to form a semblance of your item. As with all these types of games play is very simple although there's a very interesting twist here. On your turn (you do not play in teams) you draw a card (which lists three objects ranging in difficulty from easy to hard) and roll a die which tells you which of the three you must try to form. You then turn over the sand timer and arrange any of the tiles hoping to form something that looks like your item. You're not allowed to make sounds but you can point to certain parts of your arrangement or "animate" the tiles so long as they remain on the table. The twist that I haven't seen in other games of this genre is that all other players are trying to guess your object. If anyone guesses correctly then both you and the guesser receive points (1 to 3 depending on the difficulty of the item). I found this little twist to very innovative as it meant that you were involved on every turn, not only when your team was "up". Involvement is a good thing and this simple change greatly increases it for everyone. The timer seems to be about 45 seconds which I initially thought too short but in practice it worked fairly well. Long enough to form fairly complex items but short enough that there's a pressure to just get something down. Play continues around the table for a set number of rounds and the player with the most points wins.

Squint
Squint can be a complex condition and not every situation is covered here, but your optometrists will be pleased to give further advice, if needed. Children will benefit from support and encouragement during treatment, therefore, people should not be afraid to ask questions which will help them understand the condition and treatment. The successful outcome of treatment depends upon everyone co-operating.
What is a squint and how common is it?
A squint (also known as a strabismus) is a condition which arises because of an incorrect balance of the muscles that move the eye, faulty nerve signals to the muscles and some refractive error (focusing faults). If these are out of balance, the eye may turn in (converge), turn out (diverge) or sometimes turn up. Approximately 5% to 8% of children are affected by a squint or a squint related condition, which means 1 or 2 in every group of 30 children. If a child appears to have a squint at any age from six weeks onwards, it is important to seek professional advice quickly. Many children with squints have poor vision in the affected eye.
What causes it?

Squint (strabismus)
A squint is the common name for 'strabismus' which is the medical term used to describe eyes that are not pointing in the same direction. Squints are also sometimes called 'lazy eye' or 'cast' according to the direction of the turn of the eye. The squint may be present all or only part of the time, in only one eye or alternating between the two eyes. A squint can occur for a number of reasons:
  • Refractive (focusing) abnormality Eye muscle imbalance
These separately or together cause squint.
  • It can run in families Illness - can make it obvious Injury Rarely, it can be due to other diseases or illness.
Treatment of squints is different for adults and children. Some or much of the treatment you will undergo will be in the orthoptics department of Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Childhood squint
Squint is relatively common in children, and 2-3% of the population are born with a squint. Treatment is advisable as soon as possible, and can be most effective in very young children. In order to focus both eyes on an object all the eye muscles of each eye must be balanced and work together. When one eye turns, that eye is not focused properly which can lead to a deterioration of vision in the squinting eye. Some babies may appear to have a squint that is not a true squint. It is called 'epicanthus' and is caused by folds of skin on a wide nose. Epicanthus does not exclude the possibility of a squint being present and so you should always seek an expert opinion. If your child has been referred to Moorfields, they will attend the outpatient orthoptics clinic where they will be seen by one of our orthoptists who will decide on the best course of treatment. If your child has been diagnosed with a squint, it will be managed or treated by one or more of:

NEW ALBUM!!
A year ago March, we were out on tour as a four piece (Brandon, Don, Lori on keys and guitar and Luke Sullivant on bass). We stumbled into Muncie, IN and Chris, the engineer there, offered to multi-track the evening’s performance. We said yes, and almost a year later, Don finally got around to editing and mixing it. The 11 songs featured on the album are a nice representation of what we’ve been doing on the road more recently. Half of them Lori’s, and half of them Don's, it’s a pleasure to have this music see the light of day. Waterdeep Live 3.26.03—Muncie, IN is available for sale at our store
