What is the difference between sprains and strains and how do you treat them? Read on! How to treat sprains and strains. Joints

How to treat sprains and strains
Joints are the junctions between bones and are supported by a strong band of fibre called the ligament. There are two main types of joints - the hinge joints (elbows, knees, fingers) and the ball and socket joints (hips, shoulders). Injuries to the joints are known as sprains while injuries to the muscles that moves the bones are described as strains. Dislocations happen when the bone partially or completely comes out of its socket. Sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between a dislocated joint and a broken bone so if you are in doubt treat it as a fracture and consult a doctor. These problems are common and can be very painful. A sprain takes place when the ligaments which hold the bones together are stretched too much or torn. The signs indicating a sprain are very similar to those of fractures. Pain and tenderness is felt in the affected area and movement increases the pain. The joint will swell up and bruising may develop. Sprains often occur when you twist your foot on the edge of a sidewalk or fall over. There are four ways to treat sprains - Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation; you can remember this by memorising the acronym RICE. bodyOffer(185) Awkward or violent movements can tear or strain muscles. This is referred to as a pulled muscle and is one of the most common sports injuries. Muscle strain is also a common cause of back pain. The affected area may gradually become stiff and movement makes it worse. There may also be swelling and bruising. If the muscle has been torn in half it can look as though it has a dent in it. As with a sprain, following the RICE procedure is helpful and in severe cases an Ibuprofen drug can be taken to reduce inflammation. After a period of rest, stretching exercises can be carried out to aid the healing process.

Sprains and Strains We usually think of ankles and wrists. But backs, necks and shoulders suffer from sprains and strains and often take months to treat. A sprain is a stretched ligament. A sprain occurs when a ligament, which holds two bones together is stretched beyond it's normal range of motion. Strains are stretch injuries in muscles. And since muscles make up 40% of bodyweight, a strained muscle can seriously limit motion and activity. Joints are designed to allow us to twist, bend and turn. Every joint has a normal range of motion. When a joint is forced to go farther the result is usually a strain or a sprain. Sports is a common cause of strains and sprains. But we are all vulnerable to these injuries by simply walking, running, tripping and falling. In order to function well muscles and joints need to be warmed up so that they are more flexible. If not warmed up muscles can be strained. Overuse or awkward motions can also strain muscles. A common cause of back pain is lifting without bending at the knees and not using the leg muscles to absorb the weight. Most people recognize a chiropractic doctors expertise in the area of neck and back pain. But more and more patients are turning to chiropractic doctors for treatment of sprained ankles, wrists, shoulders and knees. A variety of treatments are used including manipulation, ice, heat, ultrasound, muscle stimulation and massage.

You are in: Sprains and Strains Sprains and Strains Overview People are able to move because muscles contract and make the joints that they cross, move. Muscles attach on each side of the joint to bone by thick bands of fibrous tissue called tendons. When a muscle contracts, it shortens and pulls on the tendon, which allows the joint to go through a range of motion. A strain occurs when the muscle tendon unit is stretched or torn. The most common reason for this is the overuse and stretching of the muscle. The damage may occur in 3 areas.

SpineUniverse San Diego, CA, USA Most people will experience back pain during their lifetime. Some patients fear the worst, especially when pain is severe. Although back pain can be caused by fracture, disc disorder, or tumor, the most common cause is sprain or strain. Sprains and strains often result from excessive physical demands on the back. Lifting something too heavy, a sudden fall, car crash, or sports injury can cause soft tissues (ligaments, muscles, tendons) to stretch too much. Sprains · Strains The spine includes vertebrae (bones), discs (cartilaginous pads or shock absorbers), the spinal cord and nerve roots (neurological wiring system), and blood vessels (nourishment). Ligaments link bones together, and tendons connect muscles to bones and discs. The ligaments, muscles, and tendons work together to handle the external forces the spine encounters during movement, such as bending forward and lifting. Sprains and strains are similar disorders affecting different soft tissues in the spine. Sprains are limited to ligaments whereas strains affect muscles, tendons, or muscle-tendon combinations.

Sprains and Strains
The majority of sports injuries are caused by minor trauma involving muscles, ligaments, and/or tendons, including:
  • contusions (bruises)
  • sprains
  • strains
The most commonly sprained or strained joint is the ankle. The three ligaments involved in ankles sprains/strains include:
  • anterior talofibular ligament
  • posterior talofibular ligament
  • calcaneofibular ligament
Sprains or strains are uncommon in younger children because their growth plates (areas of bone growth located in the ends of long bones) are weaker than the muscles or tendons. Instead, children are prone to fractures.
What is a contusion?
A contusion (bruise) is an injury to the soft-tissue often produced by a blunt force such as a kick, fall, or blow. The immediate result will be pain, swelling, and discoloration.
What is a sprain?
A sprain is a wrenching or twisting injury to a ligament. Sprains often affect the ankles, knees, or wrists.

Supporting Research Sprains and strains often result from sports or exercise, but can easily result from any physical activity. Sprains result from an injury to a ligament (the connective tissue that links bones together at joints), most often in the ankle, knee, elbow, or wrist. Strains are tears in muscle tissue, commonly occurring in the muscles that support the neck, thigh, groin, and ankle. Signs and Symptoms Sprains and strains cause pain and swelling. You may have joint instability or disability if the injury is serious, involving a muscle or ligament tear. What Causes It? Sprains generally result from a twisting force applied to a joint while it is bearing weight, which causes the ligament to stretch beyond its natural limit. Muscle strains occur when the weight load on a muscle is greater than what the weakest part of the muscle can bear. Strains usually occur during activities that require a muscle to be stretched and bear weight at the same time. You are at risk for a sprain or strain if you do the following.
  • Exercise without warming up properly Use athletic equipment that does not fit properly Participate in sports and activities that you are not conditioned for

Medical Reference Outdoor Health / Safety Sprains and Strains Sprains and strains are injuries to ligaments (which attach one bone to another) and tendons (which attach muscle to bone) that are incurred by twisting, direct blunt trauma, or overexertion. Symptoms include pain, swelling and/or deformity, decreased range of motion secondary to pain, and bruising. The treatment is the same as for a suspected fracture
The most common sprain is of an ankle. If the injury is minor (no chance of a fracture) and/or if the victim needs to put weight on the ankle in order to seek help, the ankle may be wrapped snugly with an elastic wrap in a figure-of-eight method or taped in a crisscross weave . During the wrapping or taping , have the victim point his toes and ankle upward by passing a slender rope or strap around the ball of the foot and pulling toward the body. This allows the ankle to be strapped with the foot perpendicular to the leg and the ankle ligaments in the shortened position in which they best heal. A splint can be fashioned from a SAM Splint to provide additional support . If the sprain is severe, splint the ankle as for a fracture. An Aircast Air-Stirrup ankle brace is excellent for in-shoe support.

Sprains and strains
Strains are minor injuries to the muscles. They occur most often in the calf, thigh, groin, or shoulder, causing soreness and stiffness. Sprains are similar to strains, but are more serious and painful, and take longer to heal. They can entail damage to ligaments, tendons, or muscles-usually those surrounding a joint. Strains and sprains result from physical stress to the muscles and other tissues. Lifting a heavy object, over swinging a nine iron , or overstretching before a workout can lead to a strain. Sprains are the result of a sudden force to a muscle, tendon, or ligament. Any unexpected movement, such as a fall or a twisting motion, can yank and tear these structures.
Supplements and herbs
Along with self-care measures, supplements-taken internally or applied externally-promote tissue repair, strengthen injured areas, and reduce inflammation. They can be very effective for sprains or strains, and most need only be used for a week or so, or until the injury begins to feel better. Various oral supplements can speed the healing process; they can all be taken in combination and with conventional painkillers. Try
