Our special little girl, Mary Anastasia, or "Ana" for short, was born at St. Joseph's Women's Hospital in Tampa, Florida, on Wednesday, 9/23/98, at 10:12a. She was delivered in her 31 st gestational week. She weighed 3lbs and 4.6 oz. (Click here to see her early pictures)!
Ana had been diagnosed with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus in June during a routine ultrasound in her 17 th week of gestation. On 8/19/98, She was the 11 th baby to undergo maternal fetal (in-utero) surgery to close the SB lesion at Vanderbilt University Hospital, in an innovative procedure developed by Dr. Joseph Bruner and Dr. Noel Tulipan. Common problems in spina bifida
... A chance for a better life
Introduction
Each year in this country, 4,000 children, or an average of 11 children a day, are born with neural tube defects (NTDs) that occur when the spinal column fails to develop and close properly during the first month of pregnancy. The neural tube in a developing fetus later becomes the spinal cord, the backbone that protects the spinal cord, and all the nerves in the body, and any defect in the neural tube can lead to serious health consequences. Spina bifida accounts for half of all neural tube defects, and occurs when part of the spinal cord protrudes through the backbone and fails to develop normally. Thanks to improved medical and surgical care, most children born with spina bifida survive, although they may experience varying degrees of paralysis, loss of sensation in the lower limbs, difficulties with bowel and bladder management, hydrocephalus, learning disabilities, and latex allergies. Anencephaly, which accounts for the remaining 50 percent of neural tube defects, results from the failure of the neural tube to close properly at the upper end, causing a fatal condition in which most of the brain is absent. Infants born with anencephaly usually die at birth or within the first days after birth.

Visit the Picture Page Links On this planet you will learn a little about our son and Spina Bifida. We are Tom, Kim and Zachary. Zachary was born via c-section due to his whopping size 9lbs 10oz, on Mother's Day in 1986. We found out at that time that he had Spina Bifida. He was taken immediately to a Childrens Hospital 125 miles away. Zachary came home when he was 6 weeks old, and he had 6 surgeries in that time, and to date he has had 22. Zachary has a vp shunt, rods in his back to help keep his spine straight. He has an appendico vesicostomy, this lets me cath him in the belly button. Zachary wheels on his planet. Zachary also has nvld, hydro, add, capd, autism, nephrogenic adenoma and latex allergy. Zachary loves Pooh, windchimes, windsocks, more about Spina Bifida follow my links. Spina bifida
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Spina bifida describes birth defects caused by closure of one or more vertebral arches of the spine , resulting in malformations of the spinal cord . The spinal membranes and spinal cord may protrude through the absence of vertebral arches (called a cleft). These malformations range from spinal bifida occulta spina bifida cystica (myelomeningocele) and meningocele The most common location of the malformations are in the lumbar and sacral areas. The lumbar nerves control the muscles in the hip leg knee and foot , and help to keep the body erect. The sacral nerves control some of the muscles in the feet bowel and bladder and the ability to have an erection . Some degree of impairment can be expected in these areas. Spina bifida is a Latin term meaning "split spine." Occulta means "hidden." Table of contents 1 Spinal bifida occulta

Spinal bifida occulta
This is a mild form of spina bifida. There is no opening on the back, but the outer part of some of the vertebrae are not completely closed. The split in the vertebrae is so small that the spinal cord does not protrude. The

Cassidy's Story
Sept. 1999 Sept. 2000 Sept. 2001 Click on the pictures above for Cassidy's yearly update On February 14, 1998 (Valentine's Day!), a home pregnancy test confirmed that we were expecting our third child!! What a fun and unexpected surprise because we didn't think we would be able to have any more children because of infertility problems. At 21 weeks, we had an ultrasound, just for fun to see if we were having a boy or girl. The excitement and anticipation of seeing our child for the first time was abruptly interrupted when the technician got a concerned look on her face and said, "I'm afraid there is a problem........ you're going to need to see a specialist today......there is too much fluid in the baby's brain......this could mean other problems......" The whole world came to a abrupt halt. What had she just said? Was I dreaming? Did she say something was wrong? What could be wrong? Could this really be happening to us? Please tell me what's wrong!!!! Reality hit when I felt my own tears. Little did I know, they wouldn't stop for days. An incredible journey began in that dark, little room. A journey that caught us all by surprise and would take us places we never thought we would go.

spina bifida, spina bifida is a birth defect of the spinal column (neural tube defect). spina bifida occulta is recognizable only by xray.
http://www.crha-health.ab.ca/hlthconn/items/spina.htm
Spina Bifida Spina bifida is a birth defect of the spinal column (neural tube defect). It occurs in Canada at a rate of 1 out of every 1,000 births.* The exact cause of spina bifida is not known. What is known is that it results from a failure of the spinal bones (vertebrae) to close over the spinal nerves. This normally takes place in the early weeks of pregnancy. There is now evidence to suggest that good nutrition during pregnancy (especially adequate amounts of folic acid ) may help to reduce the risk of spina bifida. The risk of having a child with spina bifida appears to be increased in relatively young or relatively old mothers or women who already have a child affected with spina bifida. A procedure called amniocentesis can be done during pregnancy to test for spina bifida. A condition which is often associated with spina bifida is hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the cavities within the brain (called ventricles). Cerebrospinal fluid normally circulates freely between the brain and spinal column. The accumulation of fluid in the brain can increase the amount of pressure on the brain and this can result in brain damage. When hydrocephalus is treated early and effectively, brain damage can often be prevented. Treatment When a child is born with spina bifida, particularly if there is a myelomeningocele, the opening in the vertebrae and the bulging meninges and nerves are often repaired by surgery shortly after birth. Although the surgery cannot repair existing nerve damage, it can prevent additional damage. It can also help to prevent infection from developing.
