Trends in Spina Bifida and Anencephalus in the United States, 1991-2002 by T. J. Mathews, M.S. In 1992 the U.S. Public Health Service recommended that women of childbearing age increase consumption of the vitamin folic acid to reduce spina bifida and anencephalus. In 1996 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized that all enriched cereal grain products be fortified with folic acid with an optional period starting in March 1996 with mandatory fortification beginning January 1998. The 1999 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey released results showing that these public health actions have been effective in increasing folate status among U.S. women of childbearing age ( MMWR , October 27, 2000). Birth certificate data in the United States have been available for selected birth defects since 1989 from the National Vital Statistics System, a component of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). This Health e-stat provides a 12-year trend for two neural tube defects, spina bifida and anencephalus. After a significant increase in the spina bifida rate from 1992 to 1995 there was a significant decline from 1995 to 1999. The rate was stable from 1999 to 2002. The rates for 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 were significantly lower than in 1997. The rate of spina bifida in 2002 was 20.13 per 100,000 live births.

SPINA BIFIDA- PATIENT INFORMATION What is spina bifida?
"Spina Bifida" comes from 2 words "Spina" meaning spine, "bifida" meaning split or divided. Spina bifida is the term used to describe a birth defect resulting from abnormal fusion of the developing spinal tissues and even the brain. How does spina bifida occur?
What are the types of spina bifida?
  • Spina bifida occulta
Spina bifida occulta refers to a defect in the vertebra (spine bone). Usually the central nervous system is not involved. The neurological examination is normal. Most frequently the skin is normal over the vertebral defect however, associated dimples, sinuses, increased hair, fatty lump and hemangiomata (swelling consisting of blood vessels) may indicate the presence of spina bifida.
  • Spina Bifida Aperta
Meningocele:
Meningocele becomes evident at birth with observation of a cystic skin covered midline mass over the back. Half of one or more vertebrae are absent and the sac is composed of CSF (brain fluid), meninges (tissues covering the brain and the spinal cord) and skin. The reminder of the CNS is not involved and the prognosis for development is excellent. About 10% of the patients with spina bifida will have meningocele.

The Center is a component of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). The mission of NCMRR is to foster development of scientific knowledge needed to enhance the health, productivity, independence, and quality of life of persons with disabilities. This is accomplished by supporting research on enhancing the functioning of people with disabilities in daily life. A primary goal of the Center is to bring the health related problems of people with disabilities to the attention of America's best scientists in order to capitalize upon the myriad advances occurring in the biological, behavioral, and engineering sciences. Spina Bifida
Spina bifida is a type of congenital malformation of the central nervous system. In its mildest form, spina bifida occulta , there is a malformation of the vertebral arches of the spinal cord without other problems. Spina bifida occulta occurs in 5% of the population and does not cause any symptoms or problems and no treatment is required. Some children with this disorder also have a patch of hair or skin discoloration on the skin of the lower back with the defect occurs. more books Children with spina bifida , or myelomeningocele also have a malformation of the vertebral arches of the spinal cord and they have abnormalities of the spinal cord, in which the spinal cord and nerve roots protrude out. The malformation is most commonly found in the lumbosacral area of the lower back, but it can occur anywhere along the spinal cord.

yes no Spina bifida is a neural tube defect and is a developmental anomaly which occurs very early in pregnancy. The neural tube develops to form the spinal cord, brain and spine. When Spina Bifida occurs, the tube is split and one or more vertebrae (small bones of the back) fail to form properly, thus leaving a gap. There are three main types of spina bifida. Spina bifida occulta where the only sign of the malformation is a dimple or hair at the site of the defect on the skin of the back. This condition is very mild and is usually symptomless although occasionally there may be continence problems and difficulties with mobility. In Spina bifida cystica a sac or cyst is visible on the back covered by a thin layer of skin. There are two forms: a meningocele and a myelomeningocele. In a meningocele the sac contains tissues which cover the spinal cord and cerebro-spinal fluid. The nerves are not normally badly damaged and there is little or no malfunction. This is the least common form of spina bifida.

Welcome to our Journey with Spina Bifida. This website documents our continuing journey with Spina Bifida. It is my goal for this page to educate those parents who have discovered that their unborn child is affected with Spina Bifida and are desperately seeking information and for those parents who already have a child affected with Spina Bifida. I hope this page will ease some of the concerns you may have and provide hope for your child and yourselves as parents. We Begin...……. I n 1991 I discovered that I was pregnant with my first child. Although it came as a shock as my husband and I were not planning on starting a family at that time, it was wonderful news to me! Me, a "MOM"! My pregnancy was going very well and I looked forward to being a "first time" mom. I went into labor on the morning of May 31 st , 1992. My labor was minimal and after nearly 20 hours I went to the hospital. (Boy, wouldn’t it be great if labor was "always" that easy!) Dr. Sutherland was paged and I was prepped for a c-section as to avoid any unnecessary trauma to my son during birth. Nicholas, was born at 7:37am the following morning weighing a healthy 6-lbs. 12 oz.
