Quick Reference and Fact Sheets Spina Bifida
Spina bifida is the most common of a group of birth defects called neural tube defects (NTDs). The neural tube is the embryonic structure that develops into the brain and spinal cord. Often called open spine, spina bifida affects the backbone and, sometimes, the spinal cord. It is among the most common severe birth defects in the United States, affecting 1,500 to 2,000 babies (one in every 2,000 live births) each year. Spina bifida and other NTDs occur more frequently among Hispanics and whites of European extraction and, less commonly, among Ashkenazi Jews, most Asian ethnic groups and African-Americans.
How does spina bifida affect a child?
In the embryo, there is a tiny ribbon of tissue that folds inward to form a tube. This structure, called the neural tube, forms by the 28th day after conception. When this process goes awry and the neural tube does not close completely, defects in the spinal cord and in the vertebrae (small bones of the spine) can result. There are three forms of spina bifida:
  • Occulta.

Andrea is 12 years old and in the 6th grade. She likes to go swimming, play with her dog, and have friends over. She's been in three dance recitals, and she even received a standing ovation once. She's traveled to Canada and many places in the United States, and next summer she hopes to go to Scotland. When she's older, Andrea wants to be a chef. Like you, Andrea is interested in many things and can do a lot of stuff. What might be different from you, though, is the fact that Andrea can't walk. Andrea has spina bifida (say: spy -nuh bih -fuh-duh) and uses a wheelchair to get around. What Is Spina Bifida?
Someone born with spina bifida has an opening in the spine. A healthy spine is closed to protect the spinal cord, a bundle of nerves that send messages back and forth between your brain and the rest of your body. The messages tell your muscles to move so you can kick a soccer ball or pick up a pencil. The messages also tell you about sensations on your skin , so you know to pull your hand away from a hot pot.

Spina bifida is the failure of the spine to close properly during the first month of pregnancy and results in varying degrees of paralysis, loss of sensation in the lower limbs, difficulty with bowel and bladder management, hydrocephalus, and learning disabilities. It takes a team of parents, doctors, therapists, teachers and others to help a person with spina bifida achieve maximum potential. But with proper attention, that person's potential is unlimited. The cause of spina bifida is unknown, and the scientific community is unable to explain whether the determinants of spina bifida are genetic or environmental. Recent scientific research, however, shows that folic acid, a common B vitamin, may prevent more than half of all spina bifida births. According to the United States Center for Disease Control, if all women of childbearing age in the United States who are capable of becoming pregnant would consume 0.4 mg. of folic acid per day, the incidence of spina bifida could be reduced by over 70%.

"It was in a big high school auditorium, full of hundreds of people," Tess Macintyre begins. "Andrea was second to last to perform in the recital, and when the curtain went up, the stirring in the audience was audible. Part of her dance was in her wheelchair, and part of it was on the floor. It was so fluid and graceful. "When she finished, not only was there a standing ovation, but I saw that I wasn't the only one with wet eyes. "I think the audience responded to my daughter's courage because of her disability," she says, remembering the day her 11-year-old daughter brought the house down. "But I think the reason for Andrea's bravery was the same as the other kids' - because she was performing, not because she has spina bifida."
What Is Spina Bifida?
Spina bifida comes from a Latin term, literally meaning split or open spine. It affects about one out of every 1,000 newborns in the United States and is the most commonly occurring neural tube defect (NTD). Neural tube defects describe any type of birth defect that is caused by incomplete development of the brain, the spinal cord, or the coverings of these organs. The neural tube develops during the first month of pregnancy. The leading theory is that spina bifida occurs when the two sides of the spine fail to join together (at the end of that first month), leaving an open area. In some cases, the spinal cord or other membranes may push through this opening in the embryo's back.

ABOUT SPINA
BIFIDA: HISTORY:

The Spina Bifida Association of Western Pennsylvania (SBAWP) is a charitable, non-profit organization committed to improving the quality of life for people with disabilities, especially those with spina bifida and their families, by providing a continuum of direct service, education and advocacy.
Spina bifida is one of the most devastating of all birth defects affecting nearly one out of every 1,000 newborns in the U.S. It results from the failure of the spine to close properly during the first month of pregnancy exposing the nerves to damage or infection. At birth, the most obvious signs of spina bifida are either a cyst or indentation on the baby's spine. Surgery will close any opening, however, damaged nerves cannot be repaired. Individuals with this disability often suffer from loss of sensation in the lower extremities; bowel and bladder incontinence; leg and foot deformities and learning disabilities.
Since 1969, the SBAWP has evolved from a parent support group to become a nationally recognized provider of direct services to individuals with spina bifida. The organization serves nearly 1000 children, teens and adults living in 28 counties within Western Pennsylvania and portions of New York, Ohio, and West Virginia.
