Facts About Spina Bifida What are Neural Tube Defects? Neural tube defects (NTDs) are serious birth defects that involve incomplete development of the brain, spinal cord and/or protective coverings for these organs. There are 3 types of NTDs: anencephaly, encephalocele, and spina bifida. Babies born with anencephaly have underdeveloped brains and incomplete skulls. Most infants born with anencephaly do not survive more than a few hours after birth. Encephalocele results in a hole in the skull through which brain tissue protrudes. Although most babies with encephalocele do not live or are severely retarded, early surgery has been able to save a few children. What is Spina Bifida? Spina bifida is the most frequently occurring permanently disabling birth defect. It affects approximately one out of every 1,000 newborns in the United States. Spina bifida, the most common NTD, is one of the most devastating of all birth defects. It results from the failure of the spine to close properly during the first month of pregnancy. In severe cases, the spinal cord protrudes through the back and may be covered by skin or a thin membrane. Surgery to close a newborn's back is generally performed within 24 hours after birth to minimize the risk of infection and to preserve existing function in the spinal cord.

Treatment for the variety of effects of SB may include surgery, medication, and physiotherapy. Many individuals with SB will need assistive devices such as braces, crutches, or wheelchairs. Ongoing therapy, medical care, and/or surgical treatments may be necessary to prevent and manage complications throughout the individual's life. Surgery to close the newborn's spinal opening is generally performed within 24 hours after birth to minimize the risk of infection and to preserve existing function in the spinal cord. What is Spina Bifida ?
Spina bifida is the most frequently occurring permanently disabling birth defect. It affects approximately one out of every 1,000 newborns in the United States. More children have spina bifida than have muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, and cystic fibrosis combined. Spina bifida, the most common neural tube defect (NTD), is one of the most devastating of all birth defects. Because of the paralysis resulting from the damage to the spinal cord, people born with spina bifida may need surgeries and other extensive medical care. The condition can also cause bowel and bladder complications. A large percentage of children born with spina bifida also have hydrocephalus, the accumulation of fluid in the brain. Hydrocephalus is controlled by a surgical procedure called "shunting" which relieves the fluid build up in the brain by redirecting it into the abdominal area. Most children born with spina bifida live well into adulthood as a result of today's sophisticated medical techniques.

    Definition
Spina Bifida means cleft spine, which is an incomplete closure in the spinal column. In general, the three types of spina bifida (from mild to severe) are:
Spina Bifida Occulta: There is an opening in one or more of the vertebrae (bones) of the spinal column without apparent damage to the spinal cord. Meningocele: The meninges, or protective covering around the spinal cord, has pushed out through the opening in the vertebrae in a sac called the "meningocele." However, the spinal cord remains intact. This form can be repaired with little or no damage to the nerve pathways. Myelomeningocele: This is the most severe form of spina bifida, in which a portion of the spinal cord itself protrudes through the back. In some cases, sacs are covered with skin; in others, tissue and nerves are exposed. Generally, people use the terms "spina bifida" and "myelomeningocele" interchangeably. Back to top
    Incidence
Approximately 40% of all Americans may have spina bifida occulta, but because they experience little or no symptoms, very few of them ever know that they have it. The other two types of spina bifida, meningocele and myelomeningocele, are known collectively as "spina bifida manifesta," and occur in approximately one out of every thousand births. Of these infants born with "spina bifida manifesta," about 4% have the meningocele form, while about 96% have myelomeningocele form.

Overview - What is Fetal Surgery for Spina Bifida Benefits Fetal surgery for spina bifida is intended to decrease the handicaps associated with spina bifida by protecting the fetuses previously exposed spinal tissue from additional damage by the amniotic fluid and intrauterine movement. Doctors say this procedure can not restore neurological function which has already been lost, but it may prevent additional loss from occurring due to the intrauterine environment. As an added and unexpected benefit, it was discovered that the procedure apparently affects the way the brain develops in utero, allowing certain malformations of the brain, typically associated with spina bifida, to correct themselves. "It's extraordinary that the malformation goes away," Dr. Scott Adzick told the Philadelphia Inquirer. Because of the malformation, traditionally more then 90% of children with spina bifida required a shunt to drain fluid off the brain. "Shunts are bad news." Adzick said. "The average kid needs three or more in a lifetime." Research appears to indicate that children whom have had fetal surgery for spina bifida, are less likely to require a shunt. Perhaps a 33% to 50% reduction in the need for shunts.

    spina bifida
    Main Diseases and Conditions
    Spina Bifida
Spina bifida is a type of congenital malformation of the central nervous system. In its mildest form, spina bifida occulta , there is a malformation of the vertebral arches of the spinal cord without other problems. This occurs in 5% of the population and does not cause any symptoms or problems and no treatment is required. Some children with this disorder also have a patch of hair or skin discoloration on the skin of the lower back with the defect occurs. Children with spina bifida , or myelomeningocele also have a malformation of the vertebral arches of the spinal cord and they have abnormalities of the spinal cord, in which the spinal cord and nerve roots protrude out. The malformation is most commonly found in the lumbosacral area of the lower back, but it can occur anywhere along the spinal cord.

    http://www.spinabifida.org/hydrocephalus.htm
HYDROCEPHALUS A clear, saltwater-like liquid called cerebrospinal fluid surrounds the brain. This fluid protects and nourishes the brain, carries away wastes from brain cells and contains important chemicals and nutrients. Each day the brain produces about a pint of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which flows in a continuous circuit through the brain cavities (ventricles) and over the surface of the brain and spinal cord until it is absorbed by the body. In approximately 90 percent of people with spina bifida, the flow of cerebrospinal fluid is obstructed. A blockage at the base of the brain results in a build up of fluid in the ventricles of the brain, which then expand and push against brain tissue and the bones of the skull. In an infant the plates of the skull are not yet fused together. This enables the plates to shift and accommodate the excess cerebrospinal fluid and thus lessen the amount of damage to the brain. In some babies born with hydrocephalus the condition is arrested if the blocked passage opens or the fluid is channelled elsewhere. If it continues to develop there is continuing pressure on the brain, which if untreated will cause brain damage. Hydrocephalus is usually treated by insertion of a shunt. A shunt is a device which is designed to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain and carry it to other parts of the body. A one-way valve is used, which usually sits outside the skull, but beneath the skin, somewhere behind the ear. (

Andrea is 12 years old and in the 6th grade. She likes to go swimming, play with her dog, and have friends over. She's been in three dance recitals, and she even received a standing ovation once. She's traveled to Canada and many places in the United States, and next summer she hopes to go to Scotland. When she's older, Andrea wants to be a chef. Like you, Andrea is interested in many things and can do a lot of stuff. What might be different from you, though, is the fact that Andrea can't walk. Andrea has spina bifida (say: spy -nuh bih -fuh-duh) and uses a wheelchair to get around. What Is Spina Bifida?
Someone born with spina bifida has an opening in the spine. A healthy spine is closed to protect the spinal cord, a bundle of nerves that send messages back and forth between your brain and the rest of your body. The messages tell your muscles to move so you can kick a soccer ball or pick up a pencil. The messages also tell you about sensations on your skin , so you know to pull your hand away from a hot pot.
