Dysarthria
  • Definition : A group of speech disorders resulting from disturbances in muscular control-weakness, slowness, or incoordination- of the speech mechanism due to damage to the central or peripheral nervous system or both. The term encompasses coexisting neurogenic disorders of several or all the basic processes of speech: respiration, phonation, resonance, articulation, and prosody (Darley, 1969).
  • Medical dictionary definition: imperfect articulation in speech. Dysarthria refers to a group of disorders rather than a single disorder. It is more appropriate to refer the plural form "dysarthrias" rather than the singular form "dysarthria". Dysarthrias are speech disorders. They should not be confused with language disorders such as aphasia, language of confusion, or language of generalized intellectual impairment. The clinical relevance of this distinction is in patient management. Treatment for dysarthria differs from that employed for language disorders. Dysarthrias result from disruption of muscular control. Due to damage of the CNS or PNS or both. There is some involvement of the basic motor processes used in speech and this results in a movement disorder.

    Students With Speech Disorders
Some students have so much difficulty with speech production that it interferes with their communication and learning. Students who have a significant speech impairment may also have difficulty in acquiring the language analytical skills that are necessary for reading and writing.
    Speech disorders include:
    • dysfluency (repetition, prolongation, hesitation, block, incomplete phrases)
    • voice (problems with pitch, intensity, quality, intonation, e.g., nasal, whisper)
    • articulation (lisp, sound substitution, distortion, or omission).
These difficulties are not due to trying to speak a new language, a temporary physical disability, environmental or economic factors. The cause of the disorder may or may not be physical. It is important to have a medical examination to make sure that everything possible has been done to correct any physical abnormalities. Some students may have speech difficulties that are due to medical problems, such as cerebral palsy. A speech-language pathologist is best able to provide assessment and instructional strategies for these students.
    Classroom Strategies
These methods of helping students overcome their difficulties must be used in a way that is not embarrassing to the students. Discreet, private, individual remediation is appropriate. If students feel publicly humiliated, they may resist any form of intervention.

Problems communicating effectively and expressing yourself through language can result in serious social interaction difficulties. Typical communication problems include placing words in the wrong sequence such as "I the book need" rather than "I need the book" and associating the wrong words with objects, such as pointing towards a book and saying "I need that radio." Some people with speech disorders may not be capable of communicating at all, while others may not be able to regulate their speech and may continue to talk when it is inappropriate to do so. Motor Speech Disorders: Substrates, Differential Diagnosis, and Management > Customer Review #1: solid reference for beginning speech language pathologists

duffy provides a solid and straight-forward depiction of the more prevalent motor speech disorders. the most important function of the text is to provide a solid foundation in differential diagnosis. most of the dysarthrias that present themselves are of the mixed variety and duffy provides the reader the essential tools necessary in recognizing the signs and symptoms. clinical experience needs to provide the rest. the neurological sections were presented from a different perspective than what i had grown accostomed to in my studies, but a different approach was appreciated.
