Spastic Colon
Patients with spastic colon experience pain, often acute and piercing, in the lower abdomen slightly above the genitalia. This can pass quickly, the onset of pain being associated with the passage of looser than normal stools, abdominal distension (bloating), an unsatisfactory bowel habit (defaecating then immediately feeling the need to go again) and mucus in the stool. Sometimes, as described earlier, there is a frequency of bowel action while at other times patients are constipated. Spastic colon is a debilitating and often chronic condition.
Main Symptoms:
Visible abdominal distention (bloating)
Pain relieved by bowel action
More frequent stools with onset of pain
Rectal passing of mucus
Sensation of incomplete evacuation

In our experience, pain in this, the commonest variant of IBS, is likely to be due to abnormalities of contractility or motility of the colon and smooth muscle relaxants or antispasmodics are often effective.
Examples are:
Mebeverine hydrochloride (eg Colofac) Merbentyl Peppermint oil eg Equilon herbal,Colpermin.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, also known as Spastic Colon or Mucous Colitis, is a digestive disorder characterized by an abnormal increase in the mobility of the intestines (small and large). Symptoms may include abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea. This disorder is common; about 50 percent of all gastrointestinal problems are associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. There is no organic disease present, only the function of the intestines is affected. However, based on the symptoms, this disease can be confused with other organic bowel diseases.

The colon of someone who experiences various symptoms of constipation could look like this. The large intestine is capable of spasms, strictures, impactions, and blocks all at the same time.
CONSTIPATION Obstructed or blocked bowel; difficult defecation, infrequent passage of stool, obstipation and severe constipation (no movement). Latin meaning of constipation means “ to press together”. CAUSE Hardness and impaction of feces. If a person suffers from chronic constipation you can be sure that every tissue and cell is similarly affected. Chronic constipation is not a disease but a symptom that leads to disease.

What is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an intestinal disorder that causes:
  • crampy pain
  • gassiness
  • bloating
  • changes in bowel habits
IBS has inaccurately been called by many names:
  • colitis
  • mucous colitis
  • spastic colon
  • spastic bowel
  • functional bowel disease
IBS is called a functional disorder because there is no sign of disease when the colon is examined. Because physicians have been unable to find an organic cause, IBS often has been thought to be caused by emotional conflict or stress. While stress may worsen IBS symptoms, research suggests that other factors also are important. IBS often causes a great deal of discomfort and distress, but it is not believed to:
  • cause permanent harm to the intestines.
  • lead to intestinal bleeding of the bowel.
  • lead to a serious disease such as cancer.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Medical Author: Jay Marks, M.D.
Medical Editor: Leslie J. Schoenfield, M.D., Ph.D. What is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common ailments of the bowel (intestines) and affects an estimated 15% of persons in the US. The term, irritable bowel, is not a particularly good one since it implies that the bowel is responding irritably to normal stimuli, and this may or may not be the case. The several names for IBS, including spastic colon, spastic colitis, and mucous colitis, attest to the difficulty of getting a descriptive handle on the ailment. Moreover, each of the other names is itself as problematic as the term IBS. IBS is best described as a functional disease. The concept of functional disease is particularly useful when discussing diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. The concept applies to the muscular organs of the gastrointestinal tract; the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, gallbladder, and colon. What is meant by the term, functional, is that either the muscles of the organs or the nerves that control the organs are not working normally, and, as a result, the organs do not function normally. The nerves that control the organs include not only the nerves that lie within the muscles of the organs but also the nerves of the spinal cord and brain.

Colon Cancer (cont.)
Chronic ulcerative colitis causes inflammation of the inner lining of the colon. For further information, please read the Ulcerative Colitis article. The risk of colon cancer is much higher than average for patients with chronic ulcerative colitis of long duration. The risk of colon cancer increases significantly after 10 years of colitis. What are the symptoms of colon cancer?
Symptoms of colon cancer are numerous and non-specific. They include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, change in bowel habits, narrow stools, diarrhea or constipation, red or dark blood in stool, weight loss, abdominal pain, cramps, or bloating. Other conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (spastic colon), ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, diverticulosis, and peptic ulcer disease can have symptoms that mimic colorectal cancer. For more information on these conditions, please read the following articles: Irritable Bowel Syndrome Ulcerative Colitis Crohn's Disease Diverticulosis , and Peptic Ulcer Disease Colon cancer can be present for several years before symptoms develop. Symptoms vary according to where in the large bowel the tumor is located. The right colon is spacious, and cancers of the right colon can grow to large sizes before they cause any abdominal symptoms. Typically, right-sided cancers cause iron deficiency anemia due to the slow loss of blood over a long period of time. Iron deficiency anemia causes fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath. The left colon is narrower than the right colon. Therefore, cancers of the left colon are more likely to cause partial or complete bowel obstruction. Cancers causing partial bowel obstruction can cause symptoms of constipation, narrowed stool, diarrhea, abdominal pains, cramps, and bloating. Bright red blood in the stool may also indicate a growth near the end of the left colon or rectum.

Is it possible for neuropathy to cause the condition known as Spastic Colon(IBS)? If yes, would a anti-neuropathy med help?
An autonomic neuropathy can occur in HIV patients and can cause symptoms similar to IBS. It is generally accompanied by some degree of peripheral neuropathy, but in some cases the severity of the former may be much greater than that of the latter. There is no data to suggest that the treatments commonly used for peripheral neuropathy are effective in treating autonomic neuropathy. Since there are many possible causes of your IBS symptoms, I suggest you discuss this with your doctor and consider seeing a gastroenterologist regarding a evaluation. BB Brian Boyle, M.D., J.D.

The McDougall Program: Diet and Lifestyle Implications:

The contents of the large bowel are the primary determinant of the health and function of the intestine, and a spastic colon is no exception to this rule. Few physicians have even an elementary understanding of the influence that foods can have on the body: they are unprepared to deal with health and disease from this fundamental perspective.
Possibly it is too simple and obvious a fact that the contents of the large intestine will determine whether or not the stool will be large or small, hard or soft, and if defecation will be painful or not, and whether or not blood and mucus will accompany passage of the stool. (This is a clear case of not seeing the forest for the trees.) Could the fear that the very foods the physicians and dietitians themselves eat and feed to their families can also be the cause of their patient's illness be too personal a threat for most health professionals? The "high-tech" drug solution would be much more easy to accept for most men and women of science.
Most people with irritable bowel syndrome improve almost as soon as they begin to eat a starch-based diet that provides all types of fresh or fresh-frozen plant foods.

What IBS Means to Doctors Today
Diseases present themselves as symptoms and signs . Symptoms are the feelings that patients express, the sensations they experience, and the changed patterns of life they notice. Signs are the abnormalities that are evident to any trained observer. In other words, symptoms are the subjective indications of disease while signs are objective. When there are symptoms but no signs, the source of the symptoms can be hard to discover because signs usually point to the source of symptoms. For example, when a patient with the symptom of chills can be seen by everyone to have a fever and a cough and to be breathing with difficulty, it is easy to conclude that the source of his symptom is an infection in the respiratory tract. The word "syndrome" is the most important part of the term, irritable bowel syndrome. That word usually designates a set of symptoms rather than signs. This is certainly the case with IBS. It constitutes only a set of symptoms without the signs that everyone can see for himself.

There was an unfinished CD with tracks from Hands To, Kapotte Musiek, Aube and Spastic Colon that never made it out. There is still a slight possibility that it will be released some day. I started simply as a joke. Jorge Martin (Spastic Colon/Sleestak) and I were doing this thing that we called "Cornloaf". The name refered to the amusing fact that corn isn't always digested properly in the human body. (Peanuts doing the same.) Cornloaf turned into "Spastic Colon" and I decided to put out a cassette release by Spastic Colon. Jokingly, in keeping with the theme, we came up with "Pinch A Loaf Productions". While waiting for enough good Spastic Colon material to be recorded I recorded my own tape along with some help from a four year old boy. This was the first release, 36 Grit. Shockingly, it sold and rather quickly. It paid for itself and I decided to continue since there was really no apparant finacial risk. The whole thing snowballed from there and 18 releases later I'm still amazed.
