Viruses are more common in children under a year. About 10% of sore throats are caused by the strep (streptococcus Group A) bacteria. This does need treatment with antibiotics because of rare complications of an untreated strep bacteria such as rheumatic fever (which can lead to heart damage) or post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis ( a kidney complication where blood and protein are detected in the urine and causes a "coca-cola" colored urine). Strep throat may occur at any age, but is most common in children over 4 or 5 years of age. It is contracted by person-to-person contact and the incubation is 2 to 5 days. Strep rarely causes nasal congestion and cough. Symptoms of strep throat may include the following: fever sore throat with red spots or white spots on the tonsils swollen tender neck glands headaches stomachaches, nausea or

    Sore Throat
When your throat is red and sore, there are ways to help relieve pain quickly. While a sore throat is usually not serious, you should know when to consult a doctor. The following information will help you care for yourself with confidence. Why is my throat sore? When your throat hurts, it's a sign your body is fighting off invaders such as germs or allergens (substances to which you're allergic). Other symptoms that often go along with sore throats are hoarseness and swollen lymph nodes in your neck. A sore throat can be caused by a viral infection such as the common cold or flu virus, or by a bacterial infection such as the streptococcus group A bacteria which is the cause of "strep throat". Other causes of sore throats include cigarette smoke, straining the voice (e.g. after shouting at a football game) or allergens, which are substances which precipitate allergies. What can I do? Your goal is to reduce discomfort and eliminate the cause of your sore throat. Consider the self-care tips below. 1. Stop smoking or at least cut down.

      Causes
A sore throat may be caused by anything that irritates the sensitive mucous membranes at the back of the throat. Some irritants include viral and bacterial infections, allergic reactions , dust, smoke, fumes, hot foods or drinks, tooth or gum infections, abrasions. Hoarseness is considered a side effect. Strep throat is caused by streptococcus and is characterized by inflammation and fever . In degrees of soreness, this one beats them all, with the exception of diphtheria possibly.
      Treatment
In the case of severe sore throat, a doctor should determine the cause and treatment. Most often, only a throat culture can rule out strep throat, and antibiotics should be prescribed by the doctor for this condition. Liquid vitamin C or fruit juices should be sipped, trickled down throat slowly. Sea salt in warm water should be gargled every few hours. Drink plenty of liquids, including fresh juices if possible. Raw honey and lemon juice is good. Eat yogurt if taking antibiotics. Get plenty of rest.

    Sore throat
    Definition
Sore throat, also called pharyngitis, is a painful inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the pharynx. It is a symptom of many conditions, but most often is associated with colds or influenza . Sore throat may be caused by either viral or bacterial infections or environmental conditions. Most sore throats heal without complications, but they should not be ignored because some develop into serious illnesses. Description
Almost everyone gets a sore throat at one time or another, although children in child care or grade school have them more often than adolescents and adults. Sore throats are most common during the winter months when upper respiratory infections (colds) are more frequent. Sore throats can be either acute or chronic. Acute sore throats are the more common. They appear suddenly and last from three to about seven days. A chronic sore throat lasts much longer and is a symptom of an unresolved underlying condition or disease, such as a sinus infection.
Sore throats have many different causes, and may or may not be accompanied by cold symptoms

Virtually every child and adult gets a sore throat once or twice a year. What should you do when this happens? Could it be strep throat? How can you tell? Should you go to the doctor? Should you just call your doctor and ask for medicine over the phone? Here is the Dr. Sears guide to diagnosing and treating sore throats in children.
    CAUSES OF SORE THROAT
    • Viruses. By far, the most common cause of sore throat is any one of a large number of viruses, none of which are treatable with antibiotics. These viruses can cause high fever and very painful sore throat. They can feel just as bad or worse as strep throat.
    • Colds and coughs. The common cold virus can cause a sore throat in addition to its many other symptoms. Coughing can also irritate the throat, and so can post-nasal drip from a cold.
    • Strep throat. This is caused by the strep bacteria, and is treated with antibiotics.
    • Coxsackie virus (hand, foot, and mouth disease). This is a virus that causes high fever and painful canker sores on the throat, cheeks, gums, or lips. Click on mouth sores for more info on this.

Alternate Names : Burning in the Throat, Pain - Throat, Throat - Sore Definition A "sore" throat is discomfort, pain, or scratchiness in the throat. A sore throat often makes it painful to swallow.
Throat Anatomy Sore throats are common, especially in children. Most of the time the soreness is worse in the morning and improves as the day progresses. Like colds, the vast majority of sore throats are caused by common viral infections. (This means they will NOT respond to antibiotics.) Many people have a mild sore throat at the beginning of every cold. Sore throats can result from infections in the nose or sinuses, when drainage runs down the back of the throat, especially at night. Or, the throat itself can be infected.

    Sore Throat
A sore throat is a symptom, not a disease. A sore throat may be the result of a bacterial or viral infection or it may be the result of irritation caused by smoking, excessive loud talking, overly dry heated rooms during the winter, or the result of secretions from the nose draining down the throat in association with a cold or allergy. DIAGNOSIS:
Only 10% of sore throats are due to bacteria; the remaining 90% are the result of viral infections. Sore throats due to irritation or viral infection cannot be successfully treated with penicillin or other antibiotics. A bacterial infection may be suspected by the practitioner, but a throat culture is required to confirm the diagnosis. Throat culture tests require 24 - 48 hours before results are available. The Group A Beta hemolytic Streptococcus is only one cause of a bacterial infection - other bacterial infections may occur as well. If the throat culture should grow Group A Strep, treatment with an antibiotic is indicated, primarily to prevent heart and kidney complications. If your practitioner prescribes an antibiotic, it is important that you take the medication until it is gone to prevent these complications. TREATMENT:
  • Drink lots of liquids - the best things are warm liquids such as hot tea, soup or lemonade (8-12 ounces per hour). Avoid caffeine and alcohol.

    Sore Throat
Sore throats are an acute inflammation of the mucous membrane of the lower pharynx. Tonsils and the soft palate may also be inflamed. The main indication of a sore throat is pain when swallowing and sometimes a burning sensation and a tightness in the throat. Secretions may be discharged from the mucous membrane or the throat may be very dry.
    Causes
Catching a cold is the most prevalent cause for sore throats, but they may also be the manifestation of other diseases. Breathing through the mouth, allergies and/or pollen in the air are other possibilities.
    Remedies
    Folk
Aloe vera juice Gargle with aloe vera juice two times daily. Apple cider vinegar (ACV) According to Dr. Jarvis in his classic Folk Medicine, the remedy to use to get rid of a sore throat is to gargle with ACV. The acidity should kill the bacteria on contact. Mix one teaspoon to 2 tablespoons in a glass of water. You can mix it as strong as you can stand it. Gargle one mouthful every hour, swallowing afterward. Repeat twice each time. This treatment can cure a streptococcic sore throat in 24 hours. The acid in the ACV is very helpful in soothing and minimizing the sore throat, and, if you swallow it, the extra potassium is also beneficial. • Combine one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, one teaspoon of cayenne pepper and three tablespoons of clover honey in a glass of warm water. Gargle as often as necessary.

Browse by Review Group A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 08 January 2004. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Sore throat is a very common reason for people to seek medical care. It is a disease that remits spontaneously, that is, 'cure' is not dependent on treatment. Nonetheless primary care doctors commonly prescribe antibiotics for sore throat and other upper respiratory tract infections. Objectives: To assess the benefits of antibiotics in the management of sore throat. Search strategy: Systematic search of the literature from 1945 to 2003, using electronic searches of the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library, issue 2, 2003); MEDLINE (January 1966 to May 2003); EMBASE (January 1990 to March 2003), and the reference sections of the articles identified. We applied no language restrictions. We used abstracts of identified articles to identify trials. Selection criteria: Trials of antibiotic against control with either measures of the typical symptoms (throat soreness, headache or fever), or suppurative complications (meaning: forming pus) and non-suppurative complications of sore throat.

What is the throat? Your throat runs from the back of your mouth to the top of your respiratory and digestive tracts, it comprises the tonsils larynx and pharynx . Your throat has an important function - it helps to filter out potentially harmful bacteria , which can lead to infection. A = Pharynx B = Uvula C = Tongue D = Tonsils What is a sore throat? No matter what age you are, everybody at some time has experienced a sore throat. Inflammation of the tissues in the larynx, pharynx and tonsils cause the symptoms we associate with sore throats.
Uncomplicated sore throats usually last up to 3 days and are commonly linked with the flu and colds. Coughing, which is a symptom of both infections can aggravate the throat and make it feel worse. A severe sore throat, that lasts over 3 days could be a symptom of a more serious condition like tonsillitis (see below) or laryngitis and you should see your doctor. Sore throats also accompany many viral infections such as
