Mental Health and Behaviour Psychosomatic Illness/Somatoform Disorder Audio File Somatoform disorders are what used to be called psychosomatic illnesses. They are characterized by symptoms for which no physical cause can be found. People with these disorders are not faking symptoms. They truly believe that they are caused by serious illness. Somatoform disorders include conversion disorder, hypochondriasis and somatization disorder. The cause of these disorders is unknown. Diagnosis is difficult because underlying physical causes for the symptoms must first be eliminated. There is no general agreement on how best to treat them. In conversion disorder, which used to be called hysteria, emotional conflict and extreme stress are unconsciously converted into physical symptoms. Symptoms usually appear as the loss of a physical function. They may include paralysis, seizures, false pregnancy, blindness or the inability to walk or speak. Episodes are usually of sudden onset, brief and may recur. Characteristically, people with conversion disorder do not seem to be appropriately alarmed by their severe symptoms. Conversion disorders usually occur in adolescence or early adulthood and are believed more common in women than men. Symptoms may help the person avoid dealing with an internal conflict, avoid a disliked activity or get support from others that he or she might not otherwise receive. They usually disappear when the situation that caused it improves. Psychotherapy, hypnotherapy and behavior modification, including relaxation training, have been helpful in some cases.

CONDITION: SOMATOFORM AND FACTITIOUS DISORDERS Updated 4 Feb 02 By FECN/ Neuropsychiatry Staff I. Overview. The common feature of the Somatoform Disorders is the presence of physical symptoms that suggest a general medical condition but are not fully explained by a general medical condition, by the direct effects of a substance, or by another medical/psychiatric disorder e.g. Panic Disorder. The symptoms must cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other areas of function. The Somatoform Disorders include: Somatization Disorder, Conversion Disorder, Pain Disorder, Hypochondriasis, Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Undifferentiated Somatoform Disorder, and Somatoform Disorder NOS. Factitious Disorders and Malingering are both characterized by the intentional production or feigning of physical or psychological symptoms. In Malingering, however, symptoms are produced because of a clear external incentive, e.g., to avoid an undesirable deployment or to obtain monetary compensation, while in Factitious Disorder, symptoms result only from a wish to assume the sick role. Question Posted By: Heather on Thursday, June 15, 2000
I was recently diagnosed with this after 7 months of continual panic attacks, shortness of breath, dizziness, weak arms and legs, heavy chest pressure, back pain and skin and eye burning. I am to see my doctor next week and he said that he can help me with medications that will help me feel more comfortable. What could these be? I have been exercising and taking Nortriptyline neither of which are helping. I am not getting better at all even though I have totally accepted that I my physical symptoms were caused initially by stress. What is happening with the body chemistry exactly when it is somatoform? I don't totally understand it. I just get these dizzy spells and feel like I have sea legs along with intense eye burning. What can help this of the Nortriptyline has not. I have also taken xanax with no relief. Does this actually Go Away ever?

Dear All: I have recently done a search on Medline for articles relating to somatoform disorders and am awaiting a few articles I ordered through my library. In the meantime, I'd appreciate any references to articles or texts that address this, if anyone has favorites. I've been particularly intrigued with tummy (stomach, abdominal, the like) troubles. Problems with the diagnosis of somatization disorder
What is somatization disorder?
Somatization disorder is a psychological disorder (listing 300.81 in the DSM-IV, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). It is a variety of somatoform disorder, a condition in which a patient reports physical symptoms which cannot be explained by a known general medical disorder . These symptoms must be significant enough to cause distress and impair the person's functioning.
The diagnostic criteria
The diagnostic criteria for somatization disorder require a history of multiple physical complaints beginning before age 30 which resulted in seeking treatment or impaired functioning.
