Fast Facts on Social Anxiety Disorder
  • Social anxiety disorder—also called “social phobia”—is characterized by an intense fear of being scrutinized by other people in social or performance situations and of negative evaluation.
People who suffer from this condition literally become “sick with fear”; they are afraid to act in an embarrassing or humiliating way, causing them to completely avoid such situations or endure these situations with dread.
Anxiety-inducing situations may include public speaking, initiating or maintaining a conversation with strangers or people in authority, participating in meetings or classes and attending parties or dating.
Social anxiety disorder is the most common anxiety disorder (generalized anxiety disorder ranks second), affecting over 10 million Americans.
Social anxiety disorder affects up to 13.3 percent of the population at some point during their lifetime.
Social anxiety disorder usually begins during the mid-teens and often becomes progressively worse, frequently resulting in a lifelong condition.

Website launched! Welcome to Social-Anxiety.info Social-Anxiety.info is a website created by myself, Mark Holman, as I suffer from social anxiety but not realising other people did until I stumbled across an article last year (2002). I am now trying to limit the effects of social anxiety, and by producing this website, hope I can build a community to help others and to provide a useful resource for friends or interested parties to gain a greater insight into what social anxiety incurrs on a persons life. As a first step, please read through some of the pages in the information area such as the introduction short summary some of the symptoms associated with sa , and some example scenarios of what it's like to suffer from sa. You can also read diaries of people's lives within the community area , so that you may realise that you are not alone and not "different". Writing a diary can be beneficial and being able to openly discuss the way you feel to others who feel the same or similar way can give you the belief you need.

What is social anxiety disorder?
Social anxiety disorder, or social phobia, involves excessive self-consciousness and overwhelming anxiety in everyday social situations. People with social anxiety disorder have a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being watched and judged by others and being embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions. Their fear may be so severe that it interferes with work or school, and other ordinary activities. While many people with social phobia recognize that their fear of being around people may be excessive or unreasonable, they are unable to overcome it. They often worry for days or weeks in advance of a dreaded situation. There are three levels of social phobia: Performance social anxiety disorder - sufferers are only affected when performing in front of others (eg: severe anxiety about public speaking). Avoidant personality disorder - considered to be the most severe of the social anxiety disorders, this usually starts at an early age and is more common in males. This disorder means sufferers have problems functioing in social environments and as such have few friends and rarely marry. This level of disorder can be treated using similar methods to those used for:

Social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is an intense fear of social situations. This fear arises when the individual believes that they may be judged, scrutinized or humiliated by others. The anxiety can be specific to one social situation or can be more general in nature.
Common anxiety provoking social situations include:
    • public speaking
    • talking with people in authority
    • dating and developing close relationships
    • making a phone call or answering the phone
    • interviewing
    • attending and participating in class
    • speaking with strangers
    • meeting new people
    • eating, drinking, or writing in public
    • using public bathrooms
    • driving
    • shopping

Physical symptoms that may occur during, or in anticipation of, the situation include:
    • rapid heartbeat
    • sweating
    • muscle tension
    • upset stomach
    • trembling
    • shaky voice
    • dry mouth
    • blushing
    • queasiness
    • ticks
    • hyperventilation
    • difficulty making eye contact
In extreme cases this intense uneasiness can progress into a full blown panic attack. The victim may experience shortness of breath, heart palpitations, numbness in hands and feet, or even a sense of being outside of ones own body.

Information on Social phobia / social anxiety
    What is it?
Social or public situations of any kind may induce this disorder which is often expressed as a fear of being the centre of attention, or of others noticing the sufferer's anxious behaviour. Social phobia can also be classed as 'specific social phobia' i.e. when there is social phobia only in specific social situations, e.g. public speaking. The fear of behaving in an embarrassing or humiliating way can lead to a complete withdrawal from social contact, as well as avoidance of specific social situations such as public toilets, eating out etc. The physical manifestations of this phobia include blushing, shaking and sweating etc. Top ^
