An Overview of Social Anxiety
Social Anxiety Disorder, also called social phobia is characterized by overwhelming anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations. People that have social anxiety have a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being watched and judged by others and of being embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions. Their fear may be so severe that it interferes with work or school - and other ordinary activities. While many people with social anxiety disorder recognize that their fear of being around people may be excessive or unreasonable, they are unable to overcome it. They often worry for days or weeks in advance of a dreaded situation.
Social phobia can be limited to only one type of situation - such as a fear of speaking in formal or informal situations, or eating or drinking in front of others - or, in its most severe form, social anxiety disorder may be so broad that a person experiences symptoms almost anytime they are around other people. Social anxiety can be very debilitating - it may even keep people from going to work or school on some days. Many people with social anxiety disorder have a hard time making and keeping friends.

Social phobia is an intense fear of becoming humiliated in social situations, specifically of embarrassing yourself in front of other people. It often runs in families and may be accompanied by depression or alcoholism. Social phobia often begins around early adolescence or even younger. If you suffer from social phobia, you tend to think that other people are very competent in public and that you are not. Small mistakes you make may seem to you much more exaggerated than they really are. Blushing itself may seem painfully embarrassing, and you feel as though all eyes are focused on you. You may be afraid of being with people other than those closest to you. Or your fear may be more specific, such as feeling anxious about giving a speech, talking to a boss or other authority figure, or dating. The most common social phobia is a fear of public speaking. Sometimes social phobia involves a general fear of social situations such as parties. More rarely it may involve a fear of using a public restroom, eating out, talking on the phone, or writing in the presence of other people, such as when signing a check. Although this disorder is often thought of as shyness, the two are not the same. Shy people can be very uneasy around others, but they don't experience the extreme anxiety in anticipating a social situation, and they don't necessarily avoid circumstances that make them feel self-conscious. In contrast, people with social phobia aren't necessarily shy at all. They can be completely at ease with people most of the time, but particular situations, such as walking down an aisle in public or making a speech, can give them intense anxiety. Social phobia disrupts normal life, interfering with career or social relationships. For example, a worker can turn down a job promotion because he can't give public presentations. The dread of a social event can begin weeks in advance, and symptoms can be quite debilitating.

People with Social Anxiety Drink to Cope People with social anxiety are twice as likely as the general population to have an alcohol use disorder. Several hypotheses that try to account for this association suggest that people with social anxiety drink more than others to reduce their anxiety. Over time, this self-medication may lead to dependence. No study, however, has investigated whether people who are socially anxious are more likely to drink to cope with their social fears than are controls without anxiety.

(Redirected from Social phobia Social anxiety , sometimes known as social phobia or social anxiety disorder (SAD) , is a common form of anxiety disorder that causes sufferers to dread the social interactions and public events of everyday life, e.g. parties, meetings, or even making a phone call or walking into a shop to purchase goods. Many people have 'butterflies' or minor nerves before a date, party, or some other event that will put them on public display, but that usually does not prevent them from attending. A true social phobia is an overwhelming fear, which in extreme cases can keep the sufferer housebound and isolated for long periods of time. They are abnormally afraid of being judged, watched and possibly humiliated in public as a result of their actions, behaviour or appearance. Social phobia should not be confused with panic disorder . Sufferers of panic disorder are convinced that their panic comes from some dire physical cause, and often go to the hospital or call for an ambulance during or after their attacks. Social phobics may experience a

What is social anxiety disorder?
Social anxiety disorder is characterized by fear and anxiety in social situations, extreme shyness, timidity and concerns about being embarrassed in front of others. Social anxiety disorder affects up to 5% of children, and is the third most common psychiatric disorder in childhood. Situations that trigger anxiety and are often difficult for children with social anxiety disorder are speaking in front of the class, talking with unfamiliar children, performing in front of others, taking tests and interacting with strangers. Children with social anxiety are often lonely, have fewer friends than other children their age, and report symptoms of depression. Children who develop social anxiety before the age of 12 are not likely to outgrow the disorder. Left untreated, many children with social anxiety disorder grow up to be socially anxious adults and continue to have problems in interpersonal situations. Return to Top

Social Phobia: The Largest Anxiety Disorder Social Phobia (social anxiety disorder) is defined as the fear (anxiety) of being judged, criticized, and evaluated by other people. This fear is recognized as irrational by the individual; nevertheless, the fear of judgment in social situations persists. People who have social phobia usually find it difficult to be introduced to other people ("I wonder what they're thinking about me; I'll bet they don't like me"), attracting attention to the self or being the center of attention, being watched while doing something ("They don't like what I'm doing; I must be making a fool of myself"), and feeling insecure and self-conscious in most public settings. Life is difficult for the person with social phobia because they feel they do not fit in with every one else. Something is wrong with them. Therefore, it is easier to stay away and avoid all contact with people in social situations, whenever possible.

Social Anxiety Disorder
Social anxiety is the fear of social situations and the interaction with other people that can automatically bring on feelings of self-consciousness, judgment, evaluation, and inferiority. Put another way, social anxiety is the fear and anxiety of being judged and evaluated negatively by other people, leading to feelings of inadequacy, embarrassment, humiliation, and depression. If a person usually becomes anxious in social situations, but seems fine when they are alone, then "social anxiety" may be the problem. Social anxiety disorder (formerly termed "social phobia") is a much more common problem than past estimates have led us to believe. Millions of people all over the world suffer from this devastating and traumatic problem every day, either from a specific social anxiety or from a more generalized social anxiety. In the United States, epidemiological studies have recently pegged social anxiety disorder as the third largest psychological disorder in the country, after depression and alcoholism. It is estimated that 7-8% of the population suffers from some form of social anxiety at the present time. The lifetime prevalence rate for developing social anxiety disorder is 13-14%.

Social Anxiety Disorder
How Phobias Work The Cure Other Treatments Products Social Phobia or Social Anxiety is a major problem. Social phobia is an anxiety disorder, it's more than just shyness or nervousness around people. A powerful fear of interpersonal contact, social phobia can interfere with a person's life and health. Dr. Richard G. Heimberg of Temple University notes that people with social phobia experience many negative life problems as a result of their social anxiety: 1. they are less likely to marry than others 2. they have additional occupational difficulties 3. they may not be able to function academically and finish school 4. they report a higher incidence rate for substance abuse, and 5. depression and suicidal ideation seem to be higher than average. Often social phobia is paired with other anxiety disorders and can co-exist with self-consciousness, fear of public speaking, low self-esteem and depression. Social anxiety and social phobia have been shown to be affected positively by drug treatments. If drug treatment seems like a good first option to you consult your doctor or psychiatrist.

Originally Published: February 13, 2004 Dear Alice, My partner suffers from mild social anxiety. Is it possible that this disorder can be aggravated by stimulants such as coffee? I have noticed that on days he drinks lots of coffee, the disorder seems worse, and he is more uncomfortable. Please help! If we can eliminate possible aggravates of the disorder, he would be so much happier! Thanks,
Caring Partner Dear Caring Partner, You are perceptive to notice that your partner's coffee drinking seems to increase the anxiety s/he feels that day. Many triggers can aggravate social anxiety, and caffeine is indeed one of them. This stimulant may increase anxiety in those who are living with anxiety disorders, so you and your partner might want to talk about decreasing caffeine consumption as a way of managing his/her anxiety. Eliminating caffeine entirely is not going to get rid of the anxiety disorder, but it will reduce it to where it may be more manageable for him, and for you. People with social anxiety have a number of triggers, including stress, diet, environmental factors, genetics, conditioned responses, and negative thought patterns. It is the balance among them that will determine the effect of abstaining from or reducing intake of caffeine. Your partner needs to find the right level of caffeine for him/her; this may take some trial and error, starting with a gradual decrease in caffeine intake, with advice from a health care provider. If your partner is already seeing a counselor about social anxiety, s/he may want to discuss with that therapist this planned reduction in caffeine consumption in relation to other triggers.

In the meantime, it might make sense for you to start by seeking assistance from people and places that will allow you to do so without your parents knowing. Depending on your age and school situation, you can explore some of the following:
  • speaking with a school nurse or guidance counselor reaching out to a dean or another school administrator who knows you or works closely with students consulting with your pediatrician or another health care provider or clinic staff member who has known you for a while talking with a religious leader you know or a friend or mentor — even someone close to your age — to find out if s/he knows of free or low-cost services in your area
It may not feel like it, but you are by no means the only person who struggles with these issues. While it may feel embarrassing to ask for help, health care and school personnel are trained to help you find the support and resources you need, so that you can figure out what's going on and start feeling better.
